fdotbre, of similar- sizaf which had been in use two
years, in to a fire made with dry oak wood and
Phtsburgh stone cbnK for the space of.five .and a-half
hoars, andj durlnff that lime, we believe the hearapplied
was far greater tnau any ordinary conflaeration—-that,
at the expiration of that time, on taklng the Bafe from
the fire, and cooling them down, we found that the iron
casting on both was In places entirely burnt off,butthar
the bookawere unlrjured; and! on opening , the Safes;
-wp hand books and papers enurely. uninjured, eXceot
slightly by the waterused in cooling off . Thls weTotind'
to be the case with both bares, and the only perceptible
diffidence m the appearance of the interior-was, that
the varnish on the wood work of Burke ft Barnes’ Bafe :
was entirely uninjured, while on' that of Hall,Dodd ft
Co.’*, it was bhsiered:and'blackened.‘ Xn cotidiiiBibn;
