Xhtncamon'e Painting. —This beautiful pain
ting elosed.its exhibition, on Saturday, and-we
regret to state, did not receive that encourage
ment it merits. The scene is taken from the
fourth book of Paradise Lost, and the time se
lected is that when Satan leaves Adam, after
having heard Eve describe to Adam her thoughts
when she first became conscious of being, and
"had seen him; and again, when Adam and bis
helpmate return to their place of rest. Thecol
oringof the painting and'the execution of the
design, throughout, are worthy of n better ap
preciation than they received in our city. The
. painting is five feet in height by seven in length,
Mr. %uncanson has - been occupied fourteen
months in completing the picture, and ebould
now receive a liberal patronage.
Intent to Kill.— A boy named William Patch
- was committed to prison, by lhe Mayor, on Sat
urday afternoon,.charged with an assault and
battery; with intent to kill, William Parsoas.—
The assault was committed on the Fourth Street
Road, on the fifth of July, and commenced aB fol
lows : Mr. Parsons had a flag hanging ont from
his door, and on his remonstrating with Patch,
who attempted to pull it down, the boy strnck
Mr. P. with an instrument calleda'handy Billy,’
on the head several times, hurting him severely.
The assault was an aggravated affair, and is
another warning added to the many those per
sons have had, who indulge in the cowardly
[ ' practice of carrying weapons.

At a meeting of the new Board, tho following
officers were unanimously elected :

A Nuisantt. —That portion of the canal which
lies between the month of the tunnel and the
Seventh street bridge is a nuisance in the fallest
sense of the word., It .is made the receptacle for
filth of every kind, and the stagnant water and
nauseous mud which ore there, are the greatest
generatorsof disease that can be found. .If onr
memory serves ns right, one of onr most efficient
engine companies, (tho Neptune) asked permis
sion, a year or two. ago, to build an enginehoiise
which they badly need, over this mndhole, hot it
was not .granted, for; the reason, .we suppose,
that it did not suit the individual interest of the
wisacres who withheld the permission.

"The Prairie Scout’’ —This work has been laid
upon onr table by Gildenfenny & Co., of Fourth
street, where it'can be procured. It Is a work
of great merit, and contains thrilling pictures of
frontier life. It was originally published in
Blaokwood'a Magazine, and that is a sufficient
guaranty of its literary worth. Those of onr
readers who wish a good book, descriptive of
the lives end adventures of the interesting class
of people found on the western frontiers, should
procure this work.
Petty Larceny; —A colored woman, named
Daphney Mills, who had been discharged from
_ jail in morning, made a complaint before
Alderman Major, on Saturday, against three
: other colored persons, charging them with the
larceny of several articles of clothing, valued at
three dollars>.from her dwelling. Nothing was
done in the caSe when we left the office, bat it Is
probable it will: be dismissed, as Daphney is

§lO, and committed in default.
The Jfonongahda. —Tho- machinery of this
steamer,, which, in her day; was quite a favorite
here, was sold in St.- Louis at public auction, a
short time since. Capt. Beilly purchased the

a new boat now building. . ..
Committed. —A man named J. Thomas, was
committed to Prison, onSatnrday, charged with
adultery, on the oath of John Hollenborougb.
-The prisoner was arrested, on Friday, at Ro

Morality —or rather Temperance—appears to
be gaining ground in our city, and it is. a good
thing even at this late day. On. Saturday there
were but two commitments to the county prison
for drunkenness.
