I know him ■ in the old country; he wns a boy then, and I never heard any thing against hischaracter. Ho drinks occasionally, but never saw him drank. Cauley came in another day,, and .told mo that he hadtoldJamcs Hickey to ask xne whether or not he, (Caul6y,) had received $2OO with his - wife. I don’t know whether I told him I would, or would not. I told his undo Farrel Cauley that I did not think ho had received, any money withher. . On Monday, evening when ho came, be said that-Mrs. Cuthbert had found a paper of drugstnif when she'was cleaning out the house, aud had put it in the cupboard, that it had re maiaed there fill that time, and that he supposed the rats hud knocked it. about* as it bad got among the. sugar Or tea.' Mrs. Mary Clancy, sworn—This wilnoss stated that on Monday morning, Cauley came into her house 1 , and said that ail Mr. Cathbert’s family had been poisoned; asked him how it took piaco and he said did not know, unless tho tea or.su gar had done it, that all the family had vomited. That was all that passed until Monday evening* when we. came, baok from the funeral, I , went into the kitchen, and found Cauley and his. wife tbero. Ho was drunk, and they were quar reling. He said that if "that stuff" had not been found on the shelf, ho wonld then oithor.be in hell* or in the bottom of the river. His wife told him to hold his: tongue* that he was a fool, and ongbt to do her bidding. Asked, Cauley how the: children come to bepoi soned, nnd-he said that some stuff had got into the Sugar.: Then he said his soul would be in hell before this, for he would; have out his throat with his own razor if this stuff hod not been found on the shelf, oriu the crook, I forget which.. I said that surely his bou! would bom —, if he -had taken his own life, and what was he think ing of doing such a thing, for? Ho replied, on. account of having had the misfortune to ijft the kettle off the stove, for that it was boiling over, and he lifted it off. I told him that that would only give people room to suspect him, and that no one-was accusing him. Then he went on his knees .two or three times, and wlßhcd that his I Maker would strike him dead if he would hurt I Cuthbert or, anyone belonging to him.' The statement of Mrs. Cathbert coinoided with what has been already, published, and with the statement of her husband, os above, except that she stated that she examined the kettle, and in the bottom of it saw about a spoonful of white glistening substance. ' After considerable discussion, the Jury return ed the following verdict: "Wo find that tliO: deceased, Robert, William, and Mary Ann Cnthbert, came to their deaths by means oE arsenic, administered by John Can ley and Ann Cauley, his wife.” Coroner Arthurs then lodged a commitment against the prisoners, on a oharge of “wilful murder.” - COURT OF (JCARTKR SESSIONS. The bill passed the House after violent opposi tion, by a vote of thirty to, twenty,.
