Sentinel, that quitea number of accidents have
happened, on the Portage -Railroad, in that vicin
ity. On Wednesday week, Miss Margaret Car
■ rolf was caught by tho Safety Car, on .Plane No.
5i and run over, -injuring her severely. On Sat
urday last, between Plane No. 2. and S., Mr.
James Gallagher, a atono. mason on the New Por
tage Roail. wlule endeavoring to get on a lumber
■ car; his foot slipped, and'falling on the track the
wheels of the car passed oyer both his thighs.
■ 1 Tho unfortunate man died on Sunday morning at
four o’olook. - Ou Friday, near , tho half-way
house, a man named Hopkins,lost his right arm
by the wheels ofa earpassingover it.: C. B. Cot
tee, Esq., State Agent, was also caught between
two cars, und bruised considerably.
Riotous and Disorderly Conduct. —Robt. Bus.
by, Ri S. Yansiokle and Hcniy Jaokson-were ar
rested, yesterday, and brought before Alderman
Rinehart, charged, on oath- of John Johnson,
with riotous and disorderly conduct at .the house
of-Samuel Hulwings, a few miles from the city,
oh the canal. They, were required to-give bail
to the amount of each, in default of which
they were committed to jail. ■ Two other persons,
Nelson Vonsickle audGarrcttl anarchic, charged
with the same offence, are still at large. Tho
defendants are all raftsmen, from some of tho,
northern counties. 1
The Poisoning Cue—Charge of Murder.— James
Cuthbert appeared before Mayor Guthrio yester
day, and charged by oath Honuora Cauley, with
murder. She was committed to prison for a
further hearing to-day. It will bo remembered
that Mrs. Cauley, who is a sister-in-law of Cuth
bert, boarded in tho family ; her hußhand was
arrested some days ago on a complaint of -Mr.
Cuthbert, for-surety.of the Peace, and it is al
leged that developements have been made, since
then, tending to criminate both Cauley and his
wife, in'tho murder of the children,
Mr; Cauley was also brought from the county
jail to the Mayor's office, and committed to pris
on oa oath of James Cuthbert, charged with
murder.
Well Deserved.—The Grand Jury in their pre
sentment, pay a- deserved compliment to Mr.
Fox, the efficient jailer, and award him credit
for tho manner in which he keeps tho county pris
on, despite the largo nnmborofdegradednudfil
thy persons ho has under his charge. A like
compliment is olso paid to Major Beckham,.War
den of the iVcstern Penitentiary, which institu
tion the jury visited, and are loud in praise of
the syetem of order and cleanliness which reign

Dangerous Dog. —lnformation was laid before
Alderman Lewis, charging a man named Bright
with keeping a dangerous dog.. A -child wns
very badly bitten, which is stated as the cause of
the complaint.- This is the second onso of tho
kind that has occurred lately, and keepers
of dangerous dogß should have them under re
straint-
Disorderly Conduct. —lnformation was laid be
fore Alderman Parkinson* yesterday,.by Charles
Eoherts,against a Mrs, Hartmoyer, charging
her with resisting an officer—a tax-collector, A
; warrant was issued for the arrest of Mrs. H.—-
It appears that Mr. Roberta stood in fear of that
tomble weapon 1 ' in tho hands of a woman—the
broomstick.
The-Qrand Jury, intlieirpresentment, recom
mended a liberal subscription by the County
Commissioners, to tho proposed House of Re
fuge; and they also: recommended the introduc
tion of Gas into the Court rooms, county offices,
and jail. This is a good suggestion, and . should,
be acted on immediately.
Steamboat Robbery.—A passenger on ono of
the Brownsville packets by tho name of Phillipß,
was robbed of $BO, on Tuesday night. The
thief succeeded in outting a hole through the
panel or the door, by which means he reached
the pantaloons of Mr. Phillips, and abstracted
tho money.
Removal of a Tailgate.— We loom that a peti
tion is now in circulation praying for the remo
val of the tollgate, on tho Allegheny and Butler
Plank road, beyond the limits of Duquesne Bor
ough. We have not been informed as to the rea
son for its removal.
The Theatre. —This evening-is set apart for
the benefit of Mrs. Bamoy Williams, a most ac
complished lady and talented -actress; she was
formerly, knpwn to -oar theatre-goers os Mrs.
Mostnyer. Both; Barney and her appear in
several pieces.
Assault and Battery.—' The Butherfordß have
bocome a standing name on our police records.
A lady of the family—Elizabeth by name—was
brought before Alderman Major, on Wednesday,
chargod with assault and battery, on oath of
Joßeph Taylor- “Elizabeth was bail.
Stolen.—' Thirty dollars were stolen on Wednes
day lost, from the stall of Mr. Wiekline, in the
Diamond Market House. Our city' is . infested
not only with burglars, but also hns lts quote of
the light-fingered gentry.^
Mr, delivered a lecture last, evening, in
the Second Presbyterian Church, on the subject
of the Reformation in Switzerland. The gentle- 1
man's address is represented aa being very able
and eloquent.
The Weather, yesterday, was very fine.: :We
seem to have got a respite'from the rain, if it
will last—but it will not. Wo have no longer
anyconfidenco in sunny daya.
The Winchester, it will be borne in mind, leaves
for Wheeling this morning. Passengers will
find comfortablo accommodations on the - Win
chester.

Senate.—Mr. iMangum-mode a personal ex
planation, defining the position of the Presiden
tial question. Ho Baid. he would probably bo
prepared to support whoever, was the Whig nom
inee, though fielding his preferences, as he did
four years ago. He was soon to withdraw .from
public life, for the privacy of the family circle.
His prefcrrenooß for the Presidential candidate
diiforcdfrom tho great majority of his constitu
ents—for ho must acknowledge Winfield Scott to
be his first choice, whoso military services have
endeared him to the people and the country, in
payment of a debt of gratitude. :
Mr. Dawson also explained with regard to the
Whig caucus. He denied being present, or act
ing with it
Mr. Gwinn asked Mr. Dawson if he could say,
by authority, that Gen. Soott is in f&vorof the.
Fugitive Slave Law, and would execute it if
elected President.
Mr. Mongumsaidho bad no conversation with
Gen. Soott since the passage of the Compromise;
bat when the omnibus was pending, Gen. Scott
favored its passage.
The subject was then dropped, and the French
Spoliation Bill Tas considered, and ordorod to bo
engrossed, by a vote of 26 to 10. The Senate
then adjourned.
' The House resumed the consideration of tho
Report of the Printing Comthittee.

ARRIVAL OF TEE STEAMER AMERICA.
The steamer America arrived at Halifax this
morning at three o'clock. She left Liverpool on
tho morning of tho 3d at 11 o’clock, bringing 47
through passengers.
The America arrived at Liverpool on the 29th
ult. in tho evenings The Arctio arrived on tho
evening of the 31st; tho Audio's advices strength
ened the feelings of dullness and inactivity in
tho cotton market.
ENGLAND.
. Secretary Walpole introduced- a new Militia
Bill into the Houge of Commons. Lord Pal
merston supported it and Lord John Russell did
not opposo it. Mr. Home protested against it
and Cobden ridiculed it.
Mr. Berkley’s bill for voting by ballot nt Par
liamentary elections was rejeoted by a majority
of 102. , -
Sherman Crawford’s Irish Tenant Bill was also
rejected bv a manonvro on tho part of tho Gov
ernment.-
A bill was announced establishing ■ a steam
communication between Canada, Newfoundland
and England. ■
■ Monton-Millies has offered a resolution con
coming Austrian restrictions upon British trav

Corros Market. —Previous to the America’s
departure tho sales were unusually limited, and
tho priceß irregular. Blight reductions were
made on all descriptions of American under fair.
Brown & Shipley’s Circular says that they
were fully Tho sales of tho week wero 31,-
000 bales, of which 2,000 were on speculation,
and 4,000 for expert.- The brokers quote fair

Broadstuffs.—Much depressed; the circulars
disagree as to the extent of the decline. Brown
& Shipley quote flour ns having declined from
6d. to Is. Wheat has declined one and two
pence; they quote Western Canal, Philadelphia.
Baltimore ana Ohio at 19s. 6d.
The continental markets have declined about
equally as at Liverpool, and wheat haa recedod
in the chief Baltic ports.
Provisions.—There have been limited supplies
and limited transactions in Beef and Pork, but
the prices httve.bccn very firm. Gardiner & Co.

Pork 605@70 ; bacon inactive; a smalt supply
at prices supported. Lard dull at Gd, a shilling
lower; Tallow in fair demand at easier prices-

Business nt Manchester corresponded with the
dullness at Liverpool. The spinners and manu
facturers are anxious to renew their engage

Charles Cavan Duffy, of the Dublin Nation
newspaper, is a candidate for New Boss*
- The committee on the .Cathotio Defence Asso
ciation, hold daily meetings to canvass the iner

A mooting of the citizens of Dublin was held
on tho snbject of tenant rights. ■
Sherman Crawford’s bill was unanimously ap
proved, and the meeting passed a pledge to sup-,
port none bnt staunch aupporters of the nation

Tho initial atop was taken in Dublin to erect a
monument in honor of Thomas Moore..
Sir William Somerville, late Chief Secretaiy of
Ireland, has been hunted: from the representa
tion, and has sought refuge in Canterbury.
FRANCE.
The Frenoh Chamber wob opened on the 29th
by the President in petaon. Ho was attended;
by a btilliant staff. - His. reception was of the
■warmest kind. He -read his speechstanding, in j
which he announced that it was the interest of
France to keep In amity with all-nations. > He
disclaimed any intention of assuming the title of;
Emperor, but declared that if disaffection or in
trigue forced him, ho would demand of the peo.-
ple, in the name of the’repose of Franco, a new
title which would irrevocably fix in Mb person
the power with which: the; people had invested
him. His Speech excited immense applause and
crics.of Vive Napoleonduring the reading.
The President then'-took the oath of fidelity
to the Constitution, and the Members Wore sworn
to fidelity to the; President. Qavoignac and M.
Carnot were absent the following day, and the
legislative corps met in their roßpectivo cham
bers.: :
Martini law ceased on the 28th nit., in nil the
departments.
: The Codo Civil liail reaamed the former title
of Code Napoleon.
A deputation from Havre had arrived to pro*
test against an additional duty on foreign sugar.
The President’s notation is fixed at tern mil

~ Tho feeling increases that an empire may yet
be declared.
No farther arrests - are to.be made except ac
cording to law.
VIRGINIA WHIG CONVENTION.
Richmond, April 14.
The Whig State Convention met to-day and
was largely attended. It was organised by the
appointment of Mr. Wall, of- Spotsylvania, Pre
sident pro tm. A committee of ■ fifteen was ap
pointed report- permanent officers, nnd the
eonvention adjourned until that night It was
believed no preference .would .be expressed; for
the Presidenoy. The friends of Pillmore and
Seott were both strongly represented. .. :

arrived without noise, and trill depart without
confusion. - He has. been quite retired since his
return. .Numbers of-Senators and-Representas

for Netv York,, That desire he was unable to

The government is prosecuting the forgeries
of the Mexican vouchers with extraordinary dili
gence. William R. 'Brown, of Michigan, is on
trial in the oriminal court; the Hon. A. W: Bad,
of Detroit, is his counsel.
The mechanics and laborers on the extension
of the Capitol, resume work to-morrow.
Tho Texas bond holders met to-day; they
appointed a committee; and adjourned without
a full decision. ; Tho opinion- is that they will
take what Toxns offers, and bide their chanoes
for the remainder.
CALIFORNIA TICKET SWINDLERS—BIBLE
SOCIETY DIFFICULTY. ?
Another nest of California ticket swindlers has
been.broken up. They had been selling a laTgo
nnmbor of spurious tickets for the ship Beindeor.
Qoo. E. Hamilton &Co., whose office was oyer
Ocean Bank, were-the principals. They have
fled the city.
A spooial meeting of the American Bible So
ciety was, held this afternoon, to consider tho
extraordinary course of the-First Baptist Church,
Broome street, in ejeotlng the Society-from the
rooms under the Church, in eonsequence of the
refusal of the Society to lond itself.to the new
version movoment. Strong resolutions were pass
ed, and the Board were iUßtruotcd to vacate the
rooms forthwith. The Socioty met again in the
evening, and were addressed by the Bov. Messrs,
Hague, Culver, Reese, and others. Thero was a
large attendance from Pennsylvania, New Jersey

Bufas Green, convicted at Mobile of forgery
has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment in
the Penitentiary.
A hill granting the Philadelphia Railroad tho

hanna at Havre do Grace was reported in the
Maryland Legislature to-day.

REMARKS—The weather since our last review has
been unusually wet and unpleasant, which to a consli
erablo degree checked business transactions. Notwith
standing, liowe%'er, the inclemency of the weather, in
some of the leading articles of trade, such as Bacon
Sugar, Molasses and Lard, there was a heavy business
done at full prices, and in some instances at an advance
over lost week’s rates. Sugar and Molasses have an i
upward tendency, in consequence of a movement ia j
tlio markets below. Our rivers continue in excellent j
order. Receipts of produce, groceries, Ac., large; oar
