Motill's patent top-sail, attached to the ship
Thaekamaxen, of Philadelphia, is attracting
much attention at Liverpool.
The Royal mail, steamship Amazon,. from
Southampton for the West Indies, took "fire on
Sunday, at 1 P. M., 4.th Jimary, silty miles
west of Sicily, and with the mails, was entirely
consumed. Of the officers, crew and passengers,
of whom there were 166 in all, only 21 were
saved. The fire is supposed to have originated
from spontaneous combustion.

XXXII CONGRESS-FIRST SESSION
[The following proceedings are given in ex
planation of Tuesday's Congress news.]
The resolution to which Mr. Dawson offered
an amendment, was one authorizing the employ
ment of a olerk, by the Committee on Indian
Affairs; Mr. Dawson's amendment proposed to
allow a clerk to the Committee on Patents, but,
after debate he withdrew it, and the original
resolution passed.
Then came came the resolutions,—as stated
yesterday—proposed by Messrs. Seward and
Cass, in relation to intervention, and which were
ordered to be printed, preparatory to being sub
mitted to the Senate, as amendments to Mr.
Clarke's resolutions on that subject, offered on
Monday.
