Mr. Stockton presented a petition of inven

Office on its original plan. They complain that
the Patent office is used for other purposes to the
injury, of , ibe.rights andiaterests of
.inTentors,
growing out of want of room for. the proper ex

Mr. Stockton presented the petition of J. P.
Levi, whose claim was rejected by the Board of
CommiSsioners on claims against Mexico, stating

Mr. Briggs offered a resolution of inquiry in

FM IN BUFFALO.
BUFFALO, Jan. 18
About 2 o'clock this morning a fire broke out
the brick block on the corner of Main and
Ettgle streets, originating from the saloon in the
basement of the corner building, under the drug
store of P. G. Fought 5:C0., and kept by David
Dix. The fire speedily communicated to the
drug store, in which a large quantity of cote
hastible matter was kept, and spread with fear
ful rapidity. Three back buildings on Main
street, and one on Eagle street, were entirely
destroyed. Those on Main street were occupied
on the ground floor by P. G. Fought & Co.,
druggists, Miss Young, milliner, and Elias W.
Palmer, grocer: and in the upper stories by
milliners, lawyers, etc. The building on Eagle
street was a private dwelling house.
Owing to the rapid spread of the flames,
but little property was got out, and the loss will
probably reach from $25,000 to $.30,000.
Two melancholy accidents occurred. Aaron
Bean. a daguerrian artist, who was setting up in
an upper chamber with the body of his dead
child, was smothered before assistance could be
rendered. It is conjectured that he fell asleep,
and from the rapid spread of the Eames, his
room wits filled with smoke before he awoke.--
His wife and daughter, in another chamber,
were rescued within a half an hour after the
discovery of the fire.
While a large crowd of spectators were stand
ing around, the walls fell, a,portion coming out
ward and burying several persons. We regret
ko say, that lir. A. M C. Smith, agent of the
Hartford Insurance Company, was killed. His
skull was fractured, and he lingered insensible
until four o'clock this morning, and then died.
Re had been, as usual, on hand to assist at the
fire, and the city loses in Lin; one of its most ac
tive and useful citizens. Mr. Smith leaves a
wife and six. children. A German. whose name
is unknown, was seriously injured, and several
others slightly-so.
It is not known for certain, whether or not
others are beneath the ruins, but no bodies have
'et been -found.
LOSS OF THE STEAMER CAMBRIDGE
BALTDIC)IIE, Jan. 19.
The steamer Cambridge, belonging to Balti-

mouth of the Rappahannock river, and at the
'ast accounts she ices high and dry. Their
were several passengers on board, in regard to
whose safety great anxiety was felt here, but
they are believed to he saft. The boat is seri
ously injured. and it is feared she will be a to
tal loss. She was built in this city some seven
years since at a cost of some $30,000. She is
