of the - most popular airs of the day.
At 9 o'clock the cloth was removed, and the
following officers were announced for the evening ,
President—R. R. R. DIIMARS.
Vise Presidents—J. J. Patterson, James F.
Campbell, and William Anderson.
Secretaries—J. Heron Foster, Henry Forrest, A.
W. Rook, James McEwen.
Mr. J. T. Kinkead, from the Committee on In
vitation, read a large number of answers to invi
tations from distinguished persons—members of
the craft and others—in different- parts of the
country ; among them were letters from the Hon.
Daniel Webster, Hon. Wm. H. Seward, Hon. Ellis
Lewis, Hon. Joseph R. Chandler, Hon. T. Yates
Walsh, Hon. Jos. 11, Kuhns, M. F. Conway, Sen
ator Carothers, Hon. Richard Coulter, Wm. S.
Swaitii, of the Philadelphia Ledger, George E.
Appleton, Senator Darlington, of Lancaster co.,
and various other gentlemen, many of them con.
taming sentiments, some of which will be found
below.
Mr. J. Heron Foster, on behalf of the Com
mittee, read the following regular Toasts :
1; The President of the United States—An office
conferred by a nation of freemen, endears him
to the friends of liberty throughout the world.
2. The Governor of Pennsylvania—ln his sym
pathy with the oppressed of all lands, he well
represents the people of the Keystone State.
3. Washington—His patriotism secured Hi::
liberties of a continent; may future leaders of
the oppressed emulate his glorious example.
4. Pranitlin—He left the Press to subdue the
lightnings of Heaven, and tame the despots of
the Earth. The present generation reap the
fruits of his labors in the cause of Science and
Liberty.
Mr. J. E. Sheridan responded to this toast in a
few remarks, in which he adverted to the glo
riaus career - of the Printer, Poet, and Philoso
pher ; and his bright example to the members of
the craft at the present day.
5. The Press—The lever which moves the
world; it finds its fulcrum in the intelligence of
a free people.
E. D. Gazzam was loudly called for, and address
ed the company. After thanking them for the
honor conferred, by calling on him to respond to
that particular toast, the gentleman remarked
that it probably was owing to the circumstance
of his being an ex-editor. Many of the older
persons present recollected that he had once con
ducted a daily paper in this city, previous to
which there existed only two daily newspapers
in Pittsburgh. During his speech, the Doctor
took occasion to notice the mission of Kossuth to
this country, and paid a most eloquent oomph,
ment to the great Hungarian. His remarks were
received with great applause, and concluded by
giving the following sentiment:
" The Typographical Association:" May the
perseverance of its members establish for the
craft of the United States, an Arch of Union, of
which their Association shall prove the Key
stone.

7.• Guttenburg, Faust, and Sehreffer—Their in

than the bullet—and rendered the shooting
stick" more formidable to tyrants than the
musket.
Mr. Kinkead made a few remarks in answer to
this toast—he had used lead both in the shape of
type and of bullets, and expressed' his willing
ness to "gird on his armor," and do battle for
the cause of human liberty, whenever his coun
try would have need of his services.
8. The Printer's National Union—Necessary for
the good of the craft, may it receive the support
of every honest member.
Mr. Rook, delegate to the last Printers' Na
tional Convention. replied to this toast. Mr. R.
advocated the necessity of the National Union,
for the protection of the craft.

9. The American Union—A " form " well
"made up;" palsied be the hand which would

'This sentiment called out P. C. Shannon, Esq.,
who made a few eloquent remarks; we regret
that our want of room will prevent us from giv
ing an extended report.
10. The Despot. of Europe—The imperial an
tipodes of Human Rights; their death struggle
comes—they have buckled on their armor, but
the undying love-of freedom cannot be quenched ;
the day dawns when the spirit of Liberty will
rise triumphant, and the victorious anathema of
disenthralled empires drown the curses of des
potism forever overthrown.
The Hon. Cornelius Darragh was here called
upon, and, in a masterly manner, gave a rapid
glance at the present conditions of affairs in
Europe : be referred .to the league among the
despots of the old world, which had overthrown
N ,poleon in 1815, and its re-enactment at the
present day, in order to quench the cause of lib
erty among the suffering masses of the continent.
This, he stigmatized in a most bitter manner, as
a disgrace to the intelligence of the nineteenth
century.
11. Kossulh—The journalist, the patriot, and
the statesman ; the press, with which he so long
opposed his oppressors, will summon the public
opinion of the world in aid of his just cause.
B. Biddle Roberta made a few remarks in reply
to the above. They were characterized by the
gentleman's nanal chasteness of style, and' elo
quence of expression-
12. The Army and Navy—The pride of our
country; ever ready to fight its battles, on land
or sea.
18. The Ladies—Heaven's last, best gift to
man: when we forget them, we for get that we
are men.
This last toast _called up Colonel Foster, of the
Dispatch, who, being unanimously voted " the
handsome man," was called upon to reply ; the
manner in which he did, fully attested his ap
preciation of " Heaven's last best gift."
following sentiments among others, were
'received by letter, from gentlemen who were
unable to attend :
By the Hon Ellis Lewis, Judge of the Supreme
Court: The Typogpaphicad Art—lt is the Art

sciences, and instils into their minds the true
principles of liberty. An intelligent Printer is
qualified for any duty or exigency whatever.
