Report of the Water Committee.
To the Select and Common Councils of the City
of Pittsburg:
Your Committee, in again presenting their
annual report, beg leave to refer you to the ac
companying documents from the hands of the
Superintendent, Clerk and Assessor for a synop
sis of our operations during the past year. ~
It is highly gratifying for your Committee to
be enabled to advert to the prosperous condition
which the Water Works Is in. During the year
nothing occurred worthy of attention, to disturb
the successful operations of the Machinery,
Pipes, Reservoirs, Ac. Every minor defect oc
curring, was speedily repaired; and due dili
gence and precaution observed throughout, so
as to render the Works capable of fulfilling„ to
the entire satisfaction of the citizens, the great
good for which they were designed.
The expenditure, it will be seen, fell far short
of the amount of revenue assessed, a annum
:tepee worthy of note, inasmuch, as for many
precedent years it was the reverse. It Is now
thought that through the aid of the new law
relating to the collection of water rents, where
by the major portion of our assessments can be
realized, and by a judicious, economical admin
istration of the affairs of the Works by future
Committees and Officers, that the financial re
sults of the last year mayi‘ays be attained.
Your Committee desire to ring to the notice
of the Councils, in a brief manner, the propriety
of their having the lower engine house render
ed more secure from the dangers of tire, by the
removal therefrom of the dwellinghousei, which
were originally attached thereto, and which
have continued to be occupied up to the.present
time by the famines of the Engineers. -- Ary ar
gument in favor of such a measure would now
be superfluous, us its judiciousness and necessi
ty must at once be apparent to every reflecting
mind.
Your Committee, in conclusion, respectfully
beg leave to testify to the efficiency and well
known ability of the Superintendent of the
Works, and also to the practical manner 12
which all the Officers connected with the de
partment, discharged their duties.
Respectfully submitted.
