Under the above caption, the Marietta
ovieri of Dec. 30th, contains an able and inte
resting, article, in which the editor sets forth
clearandforcible manner,, the importance
and necessity of constructing a continuous Kir
frdm Pittsburgh to Cincinnati. The
editor mentions tho fact that from the first of
June to this time, a period of about seven months,
there has .ouly been _about_one month_of good
navigation in the Ohio river, the consequence of
which has been, that the manufactures of Pitts
burgh and other places along the river have
been loolie.d up for want of a market. Ou ac
count of_the impossibility of obtaining fuel, and
the ?immaterial for manufacturing, many es
tablishments in the river towns have been under
:the :necessity of discharging their hands and

being, in an especial manner,
Mr. Hughes possesses talents of a high order 4
and those talents, whilst they have given him a
distinguished place in.theestimation of-his fellow
citizens, have always been: exercised frith great
zeal in behalf of the Democilitio canoe and its
inninciples, -. L Of-these _ever_heen the deci
ded and unwavering champion, and the power of
his eloquence has invariably been effectual in
rousing our political brethren to that activity
and'ardor whiehlifee - indispensable - to titiccesS:
Mr. Hughes was eleoted to the Senate of Penn
sylvania in 1843,-by the unprecedented majority
of upwards of 3,800 - votes. In Pottsirille,:his
place of reeidence, where about 1001) hailotit
were cast, there were but 16 votes against him;
and in his own immediate ward, oat of 400 bal
lots, there was but- a single one -given‘to his
competitor. These facts speak Vividly tot 'to the
regard which those who know•Mr.'llughes best,
entertain for him, whilst the journals - of the
Senate, during the time be wait *member of 'that
body, testify, with equal clearness, to his integ
rity, and sterling Democracy as a statesman.
We are gratified to record his appointment to
the important office to which he has been called
by Governor Bums; because we know that in
him the Chiet Magistrate of our choice will pos
sess an able, prudent, and thoroughly Democrat
ic counsellor, and also because we know of no
man is the State whose general character and
whose energetic services during the last hard
fought campaign, better entitles him to so emi
nent a distinction.
We learn also that our townsman, Hon. JAMES
CAMPBELL, has been tendered, and has accepted
the appointment of Attorney General. Of this
gentleman end his great merits, both as a lawyer
and as.a man, we had occasion to speak eo fre
quently during the late campaign, that we do
not think it nececcary to repeat them now. Do
footed by disorganization, vaiid 'by the most un
worthy means, Governor BIGLEE has shown his
appreciation of them and of their efforts by this
appointment. We have never known an ap
pointment so universally called - for by the Dem
ocratic Preis of the State. In this, however, it
has only uttered the sentiments of the entire
Democracy.
The enemies of Judge Campbell thought they
had accomplished much by defeating him, but
they have only given him a two-fold stronger
claim on the affections of the Democratic masses,
and they will find _that whilst he is universally
respeeted and belovtd, they are every where
avoided. ,Governor Bigler has shown by this
manly and determined act, that he is truly and
really the guardian of the usages and principles
of the party, and dear as he has ever been to it,
this appointment, made in the manner it has
been, will make him doubly more so. —Penury&
vonian.
ger The appointments above alluded to, by
our cotemporary in Philadelphia, will give uni
versal satisfaction in Western Pennsylvania.
Gov. BIGLER has shown that be has a disposition
to carry out tho wishes of the people, by ap
pointing men who are "honest, capable and faith
ful to the Constitution." Our readers will re
member that more than two months ago we took
occasion to speak in the highest terms of the
qualifications of Judge CAMPBELL, for the office
of Attorney General. We are pleased, therefore,
to find that he has - been tendered the appointment
by Gov. BIGLEIc t ant we hope that. be will accept
it without hesitation.
Judge CAIIPBC.LL WWI defeated for the Supreme
Bench, by a combination of all the unprincipled
factions that hang to the skirts of the Democra
cy of Pennsylvania, especially the Indians and
Natives, because he was too pure and honest a
min to affiliate with such dishonest
Irm present appointment, while it will displmtse
these politicians, will gratify the masses of the
party throughout the State.
Catharine Hays -.Affecting Incident.
The sweet singer of Erin, Catharine Hays, gave
a Concert at Metropolitan Hall, New York on
Thursday afternoon last, for the benefit of the
children of the Common Schools of that city.—
A most affecting incident occurred near the close
of the Concert, which is thus described in the
Herald.: Julia when Miss Hayes had taken her
place on the Stage to sing "Sweet Homo," it fine
little girl stole over to her side unobserved, and
presented her with a bouquet, with so innocent
a voice and look, that together with the nature
of the song she was about to sing, completely
overpowered her with emotion. She tried twice
to sing the ballad, and felled, and then said
something to Mr. Lavenu, the conductor, not
heard by the audience, but which they supposed
was a direction to him about the accompani
ment. Her utterance was choked, and at
length alio was compelled to leave the stage by
her feelings, and only returned after long con
tinued applause, Mr Laveati meantime an
nounciog the cause of the failure. She then
sung "Home" with such exquisite feeling and
beauty, as it was never perhaps rendered, even
by herself, before.
}ter voice o v. like the overhang of a lord
8o volt. re, sweet, w delicately clear.
The applause of the children was vehement
and prolonged.
The causo of Blum Hayes being so deeply af
fected, was the andden and vivid recollection of
the time when she was about the same age as
the little child, pulling dowers in a garden, on
the banks of the Shannon, and singing that very
song, "Home sweet home," when the friend first
heard her by accident, who gave a di?eotion to
her future glorious career.
We hope efforts will be made to induce Miss
Hays to visit Pittsburgh. We think we are per
fectly safe in promising that the largest hall in
the city will 'be crowded to overflowing with
ladies and gentlemen who wish to hear her sing.

Sunbury and Brie Railroad
Our Philadelphia exchanges of Saturday con
tain the proceedings of a mass meeting of the
citizens of Philadelphia, which was held on Fri
day evening in the saloon of the Chinese Mu
seum, to adopt measures to secure the early
commencement and completion of the Sunbury
and Erie Railroad. The large number in at
tendance was a manifestation of the general in
terest, that is felt on the subject. This railroad
is intended to connect Philadelphia with the
Lakes. •
Gen. Cadwallader officiated as President of
the meeting, assisted by numerous Vice Presi
dents and Secretaries. '
The meeting was addressed by, Gen. Cadwalla
der, Job R. Tyson, Esq., Hoa If. A. Muhlen
berg, of Berke, John W. Maynard. Judge Kel
ley, Asa Whitney, projector of the great Pacific
Railroad. Josiah Randall, and others.
Mr. Tyson closed his remarks by offering the
following preamble and resolutions, which were
adopted by acclamation:
Whereas, The trade of the great Lakes, at
present equal to the. whole foreign commerce of
the United States, is destine, from the vast,
luxuriant and improving countries, which are
drained by their waters, to =stunt and indefi
nite enlargement.
And, whereas, A lino of Railways from Phila
delphia, through the State of Pennsylvania to
to the city of Erie, would combind the shortest
possible route from the Lakes to the Atlantic,
with the best and most capacious harbor on their
extended shores, and enable this Metropolis to
appropriate the chief portion of their opulent
trade which lies westward from the port of Erie.
And, whereas, The highest inducements arc
offered for the extension of existing railways to
Lake Erie, in the cheapness of such an under
taking, and the munifloent wealth of those por
tions of our State through which it will pass.
And, whereas, A Company is organized, under
a Charter which authorises a railway from Sun
bury to Erio, and the strongest reasons exist,
with reference to the trade from the West, the
trade from the Lakes, and the trade from the
intermediate region, for prompt and of
action;
And, whereat, A continuous chain of railways
to Lake Erie, con be secured by the expenditure
of mix millions of dollars, of which at least one
third its pledged, and will no doubt be subscrib
ed along the line of the Mad and in the County
of Erie
Therefore, Rewired, That this meeting urgent
ly recommend to the citizens of Philadelphia, to
make subscriptions to Li2o stock of the Sunbury
and Erie ILaiironi Company, to such an amount
as will enable the corporation to plum the work
under contract without delay. so as to complete
a railway connection from thiscity to Lake Erie,
within the shortest possible period.
Resolved, That a committee of 3o be ap
pointed by the Chairman of this meeting, to
procure the necessary subscriptions from per
eons and corporations in the city and county of
Philadelphia.
Resolved, That this meeting recommend to
the Sunbury and Erie Badtread Company the
procurement of a law which will authorize there
to pay Interest on subscriptions, and charge the
same to the oast of construction, until so much
of the rood is finished and in use an will justify
the declaration of dividends from the profits
thereof.
Mr. Miller moved that the ailment of the
meeting constitute a portion of the committee
of three hundred, which was adopted.

8. H. STAIITOIII,
Merino Sheep Speculation of 1815-17.
The Merino sheep speculation wee one of the
most extraordinary bubbles that was ever known
in America. It bad its origin in the year 1815,
soon after the treaty of Ghent, and at a time
when thousands of our people 'were actually tin
der the influence of a manufacturing mania.
In the summer of that year, a gentleman of
Boston, imported some half dozen sheep, from
one of the southern provinces of Spain, whose
fleeces were of the finest texture, as it was said,
and such, undoubtedly, was tie fact, though the
sheep were So thoroughly and completely imbed
ded in tar, and every other offensive article, that
it would have been verydifficult to prove it. But
the very offensive appearance of the sheep seem
ed to imbue them with a mysterious value, that
rendered them doubly attractive. It was said
that the introduction of these sheep into the
United States would enable our manufactories,
then in their Infancy, to produce broadcloths, and
other woollen fabrics, of a texture that would
compete with England and Europe. Mr. Clay
was unstilted in reference to the sheep, and he
at once decided that they were exactly the ani
mate that were wanted.
The first merino sheep sold, if I recollect right,
for fifty dollars a bead. They cost o dollar in
Andalusia. The speculatibn was too profitable
to stop here, and before slung period had elaps
ed, a small fleet sailed on a sheep speculation to
the Mediterranean.
By the end of the year 1816, there were prob
ably one thousand merino sheep in the Union :
and they had advanced to twelve hundred dollars
the head.
Before the nutuEon of that year bad passed
away, they sold for fifteen hundred dollars the
head ; a lusty good looking buck was worth two
thousaud.
In New England, in the year 1817, the specu
lation, in consequence of the surplus importa
tion, began to decline; but it steadily and rapid
advanced throughout the western country.—
Kentucky, in consequence of the influence of
Mr. Clay's opinions, was especially lienefittod
In the month of August, 1817. I saw a merino
buck and ewe sold for eight thousand dollars:
and even that seemed a very small price for the
animals They were purchased by Sarni Long,
a house builder and contractor, who fancied be
had, by the transaction, secured an immense for
tune.
Thin Mr. Long was actually rabid with the
merino fever, and, in proof of it, it is only ne
cessary to relate a single anecdote. There add
ed in Lexington--and not more than a mile dis
tant from Mr. Clay's villa. of AahLand---a wealthy
gentleman named Samuel Trotter, and who, to a
-very great extent, controled the Breach of the
Rank of the United States. He bad two sheep,
a buck and an ewe, and Long was very anxious
to possess them.
Long bad often bantered Trotter for the sheep,
without success; but one day the latter said to
the former. " If you will build me such a house,
on a certain lot of land, such as I shall describe,
you &ball have the merinos."
" Draw your plane," said Long. "and let me
see them." The thing was done, and Long ea
gerly engaged in the enterprise. He built for
Trotter a four stm7 brick house, about fifty by
seventy, on the middle of an acre of land, fin
ished it in the most approved modern style, and
enclosed it with a costly fence, end handed it
. over to Trotter for the two merino sheep. The
establishment must have cost fifteen thoufmnd
dollars.
Months before the establishment was complet
ed, the price of merinos declined gradually; and
six months bad not passed away, before they
would not command twenty dollars. Mr. Long
held on to them till they had reached the par
' value of any other sheep, when he killed them,
made a barbecue, called all his friends to the
feast, and, while the "goblet went its giddy
round," like the ruined Venetian, he thanked
God that ho was not worth a ducat. He was
ruined, and soon after died of a broken bean.—

A similar case is reported by the Newark Ad
vertiser, of a veteran drunkard, occurring re
cently in South Camden. He was bitten by a
rattlesnake and not in the slightest degree in
jured; but the snake began to ehow himself
monstrous uncomfortable—writhed, wriggled,
squirmed and shivered—then coiled himself up
with an air of resignation, and died from the
effects of the liquor which it had unadvisedly
imbibed. This is a good case for temperance
lecturers. The fact, by the way, is now perfectly
notorious, that a pint of whiskey, swallowed
manfully, is a certain cure for the bite of a rat
tlesnake. While the venom remains in the sys
tem, the Liquor falls to produce drunkenness.

"I had been afflicted several years.with a soreness
of both eyes, which combined tolncrease until last Sep.
tember, (1850), the inflammation at that time having in
volved the whole lining membrane of both eyes, and
ended m the deposit," of a thick film, which wholly de
stroyed my sight. I had an operation performed, and
the thickening removed, which soon returned and left
me iu do bad a condition as before. At this stageof the
complaint I made application to several of the most
eminent medical men, who informed mt., that "my eyes
would never get well." At this time I could not distin
guish any object. By the advice of some friends (com
menced the use of the Petroleum, both internally and
locally, under which my eyes haveimproved daily until
the present time, and I have recovered my sight entire
ly. My general health was very much improved by the
Petroleum, and I attribute the restoration of my. sight to
its use. I reside at No. 102 Second street, in this city,
and will be happy to giveany information in rotation to
my case. WILLIAM HALL."
