Splnne’s room, for tlio purpose of nominating
ward officers. . The meeting was called to order
by appointing John Taylor Chairman, and John
Dniwoody, Secretary.

on Monday evening, the 29th inst, at the ap

The several members of the Cabinet and a
large number of members of Congress were pro
seated to Governor Kossuth this morning, in his
private reception room; and at twelve o’clook
the Governor and his suite prooeedcd to the
Presidential mansion in company with Mr. Web*
ster, and Messrs. Shields and Seward, of the
Senate committee, and were prese ed to Mr
Fillmore. The interview was strictly private,
being confined to the parties named and a few
intimate personal friends of the President

brieflyaddressed the people, returning his

The Intelligencer of this morning states that
His Excellency the Minister of France called
yesterday at the Department of State by direotion
of ins government, and officially announced that
the President of the French Republic hod adopt
ed a great measure of public safety—that as
Chief of State he owed to six millions of French*
men who had elected him, and to tho world
which, had received his nomination oa a new era
m the tranquillity of France, to prevent her from
a revolution from which the world might well
recoil ; —that, strong in his consciousness of pa
triotism in repelling the dangers which threaten
France and Eorope without end, he bos invited
the nation to a free choice of a firm and durable
government;—that he has appealed to suffrage,
to all m the movement, so solemn to the country,
and thought that this appeal ought to enlighten
Europe and tho world in regard to his object
The House had before it, yesterday, in Com
mittee of the Whole, the resolution for the ap
pointment of a Committee to mtrodnee Kossuth
to the House, but arrived at no notion upon it
up to the hour of adjournment
Kossuth will be introduced by Mr. Webster to
the President, to-day, and on Friday will bo
presented to the Senate. There will be no
speaking m the Senate. The President and Mr
Webster will each give him s dinner.
THE FIRE AT PHILADELPHIA.
Philadelphia, Dec. 31.
I The loss by the fire which destroyed Barnum’s
Museum last night, is very heavy, ondLwiU
amount to about $ *200,000. The building, which
originally cost .$BO,OOO, was owned by James
[ Swayne, and was insured for $30,000. Mr.
i Spooner’s loss, (be having recently purchased
i the establishment from Mr. Barnam,) is estima
ted at $70,000. on which there is an insurance
of $30,000. G. Henderson & Co., book sellers,
lost a considerable portion of their stock. Most
of the pianos and other valaables in the music
store of E. S- Walker, and Lea & Walker, were
removed : their loss, however, amounted to sev
eral thonß&nd dollars. Mr Henderson loses
about $lO,OOO. Several buildings adjoining
were considerably injured.

Cincinnati, Dec. 31
Arrived, Schuylkill, Robert Rogers, and Fan
ny Smith, from below, which report that from
Brandenburg to Louisville there is but little
floating ice, and soft.
The Chancellor, in endeavoring to break
through the ice at Insh Jimmy s bar, had nearly
forty timbers broken, and made three feet of
water in her hold. Her freights were taken by
the Sparhawk. She was saved from sinking
by the joint exertions of the crews of the Schuyl
kill and Fanny Smith.
The steamer Industry was sunk at Evansville
by the ice.
The R,*M. Patton and Pawnee came in collis*
ion &t Manckport, by which tho former was
much injured. Her cargo was cotton, for this
place.
