We-regret to hear thatmsny of oar enterpris
ing CoalandProdnce Boatmen have met with
serious losses below. This has been a most fa
tal season for many of them. The Louisville
Courier of the 23d has the following:
- Bivsa Disasees.—We learn from'Mr. 3. E.
Stiles, -who reached the city yesterday, that four
fiat-floats were out to pieces, and sunk bythe
ice near Brandenburg, and that many others
were in imminent danger. The boats sunt were
laden with cool, produce, floor and lumber. The
lumber boat belonged to That. Smith, of Pitts
burgh.-- ■ . ..
A trading boat wassmashed up in theice near
Mauckport, and the steamers Jna. Swatey and
Warren were ice-bound at. the mouth of Bull
creek, mid the latter was reported to be in a
"SmSgn-g-condition. The John Swasey was also
'lying in a critical position.

were a grant number of emigrants on the steam
er Saranac; tram New Orleans, that was aground
| at Flint'lsland last week, who were exposed to

Evtmng Setston. —The Association met pursu
ant to adjournment, to listen to an address from
Rev.. Mr. HoWordon the importance and utility
.of a Central High School, which elicited great
attention daring its masterly delivery. A vote
of thanfcs was tendered to Mr. Howard for his
able address, and Mr. H. "Williams was appoint
ed to report a synopsis of the address for publi
cation Rev. Mr. Howard and Hon. J. B. Brody,
at their own request, were proposed as active
members of the Association.
Adjourned to meet at 9 a. m. Saturday.
Saturday JUormny.—The Association met pur
suant to adjournment.
The mmntes of the preceding meeting were
read and approved. ..
The President took the chair, when the Ex-
Preeudent, J. Gregory, delivered an address on
the titllitjr and importance of such Associations,
and their bearing upon teaoher and parent.
A vote of thanks was tendered to tho Ex-
President, Tor the manner in which he had
discharged the duties of his office, and for his
address.
Prof. Thompson was again invited, by a unan
imous call of the members, to oontinue his illus
trations on Arithmetic. He kindly responded
to the invitation, and interested the members
until the hour of adjournment.
Adjourned to meet at the same place on the
lost Friday of March, 1852.

ing a threefold importance to the community—
in its bearing on teacher, parent and pnpil, the
value of which time only can develop. It is to
be hoped that parents will attend these meet
ings, and sanction their prooeedmgs by their
presence, if useful in their aim, or be prepared

interests of tho community.

KOSSUTH AT WASHINGTON.
Washibqton, Dec. 30.
The distinguished Hungarian, Louis Kossuth,
arrived here about 11 o’clock this morning, and
was met at the railroad station by Messrs.
Shields and Seward, of the Senate Committee,
and conducted to Brown’s Hotel, from whioh are
displayed the Hungarian, Swiss, Italian, Ger
man and Turkish flags, with the American flag
floating from the parapet. Upon his arrival the
cheers of, the crowd oalled out Kossuth upon the
balcony, where he bowed to the people and re
tired.
Mr. Webster will call npbn him dnnng the
day, and set spsrt a day for his introduction to
the President.
Subscription lists are in circulation for a
grand banquet to Kossuth, at five dollars a
ticket.

Captain Waterman, of the ship Challenge,
had surrendered himself to the authorities of
the United States. An investigation of the
oharges against him is to be had.
The boundary commissioners were at Tueson
on the 20th of Ootober, and would move the
next day towards the Gila.
There is a great rush of miners from the riv
ers and cities to the dry diggings.
There is a probability of a general war be
tween the Southern Indians and the whites.
Several murders had been committed by Indians
ou the Colorado. Robberies were bold and fre
quent.

Kossuth left here for Washington, at 9 o clock
this morning. There was a great crowd at the
depot
The Intelligencer and Republic of this morn
lng, bolh denounce his speech delivered hero,
and promise him utter disappointment m his ex

Barnum s Museum, corner of Seventh and
Chestnut streets, took fire from the gas lights,
this evening about 5 o’clock. The building,
with the whole collection of ounositaes it -con
tained, was entirely destroyed.
The stock in several book and music stores,
underneath, was mostly saved.
