T he competitor of Mayor Guthrie, Mr. D.

to his gfeat intelligence as a business man, he

Affairs had reached the crisis long dreaded.
The coup dc etat had been made on the Ist inst.
The President had seized the remsof. govern

Paris in a state of siege; and had also arrested
the leading opponents and appealed to the peo- :

idea of the President’s mtentionß. An*entirely :
■new ministry had been formed. t I
At daylight, Tuesday morning, the President s
proclamation had been posted throughout the
city, in which ho ordered the dispersion of the
Assembly, and the restoration of universal suf

ernment —the instant election by the people and
army of a President, to hold office ten years,
supported by a council of State and by two
houses of legislature; the executive power to
remnin in the hands of the President The
oleotion is to take place during the present |
month, and the President promises to pow to |
the will of the people, and says bo has been i
forced into his present attitude. It is certain
that Thiers, Changarmer, and others ofhis op
ponents, had decided to demand his arrest and ;
impeachment on the 2d instant, and wore almost
in the act of moving in the matter, when they |
and their principal friends were arrested and,
conveyed to Vincennes.. Whenever members of |
the Assembiy have attempted to meet, they have |
officially been ordered to disperse, and were ar- |
rested if they refused to do so. Two hundred |
members have been arrested, and subsequently!
released, but all the leaders of the opposition |
are in prison Three hundred members of the
Assembly, it is said, had given in their adhesion
to the President, and telcgraphio dispatches
from the Departments state that the President s
determination bad been hailed almost witn en
thusiasm. Subsequently these reports were
contradicted,.
Barricades were erected on different quarters
of Paris, hut were speedily broken down by the
troops. At one of these, two members of the
Assembly who ocoapied prominent places, were
killed in the conflict
On Tuesday, a section, of the. Assembly con
trived to meet, and decided on the deposition of
the President and his impeachment for high
treason. The meeting was dispersed by the
troops, and the decree was ridiculed on all hands.
Troops were placed in the honses, &0., of the j
officers of the Assembly who were exempted J
from arrest—among others, M. Duphin.
The foil vigor of martial law prevailed against
all persons concerned in barricading, and large
numbers had been shot up to Thursday night.
The success of the President seemed certain.
Loudon advices of Friday do not materially
vary the prospect, but new events are constant
ly transpiring.
[At this point of the despatch, the wires be
tween Halifax and Boston gave way, and oom
mnnication was broken off. We will .most prob
ably give the conclusion of the news by this ar
rival in to-morrow’s paper.]
