That great thoroughfare presented a very busi ness-like appearance. - Owing to the scarcity of tonnage, the rates tor flew Orleans freight advanced, and the boats completed their cargoes at the enhanced rates. The river opposite remains stationaiy or slow ly rising, but boats drawing over 6* feet did not think it prudent to leave port. ■ ' By the arrival of the Timour No. 2, from tho Missouri, we learn that that mer continues to deoline, with scant 80 inches on-the principal bars in'Howard bend. A great deni of snow has fallen in that vicinity recently, and many regard it as evidence of the early, close of navigation. The latest acoounts received from the Upper SEssissippi represent that in the upper portion of the river, steamboat navigation-is temporarily stiependedi - The principal portion of the regular traders have laid up. . Therecent arrivals from the Illinois report 4 feet of water on the bar at Spring Creek, but a tower stage in the lower part of the river. The Louisville Courier of the let haß the fol lowing: Last evening the nver was at a stand, with 6 feet 5 inches of water in the canal, and 8 feet 9 Inches on the falls. Since Saturday the nver has risen 2 inches. The weather yesterday morning was disagreeable, with a drizzling rain falling, but in the evening it cleared off cool. Steajteb. Molly *Gabth suztk.—We learn by a despatch from CapL Williams, of Evansville, that the Molly Garth, for Florence, with an assorted cargo of merchandize, flour, whiskey, bagging, &c.y came in collision with the Pontiao No. 2, on the 28th ultimo, four miles below tfwensboro, and sank m 5 to 7 feet water, about 60 feet from * the shore She knocked a hole aboat 6 feet m length in the side, opposite the forward end of the boilers. No one was injured by the acci dent. The Molly Garth was owned in Pittsburgh, where she was insured for §6,000. Her cargo was purchased entirely in this city by Alabama buyers, and it was not insured. The' boat can be raised, and tho greater portion of the cargo eared. . r THB James Robb.— The Cincinnati Tim>3 gives the following description of one of their crack steamers. Can’t they send her up this way to lie along side of the Pittsburgh for a day ? We will bo nowise churlish in admitting all her mer its: “ Her length is 300 feet, cabin.27s feet, wheel 38 feet m diameter, with 12 feet buckets, fire boilers 80 feet loogv 42 inches in diameter; cyl inders 26 inches, with 9 feet stroke. She is to be finished ■in the most magnificent style, and both forward and aft will hare two cabins be sides-a “Texas,” 76 feet in length—making, in fact, a “ three ‘Story” boat. Mr. Jameß Robb, the banker of New Orleans, for whom she is named,- has sent her a costly piano and a stand of colors- Captain Ned Montgomery, formerly of the mail line, and more recently of the Ore gon, is to be her master, and she has been built under his supemsiou. We shall refer to her again when farther adranced. She will be out by New Year’s Day.” The cose of Com. vs. James Downing, indiote4 for arson, came off yesterday. The prisoner, was acquitted; the jury was oat huts short time. The case was oae of doubt, which, of course, the prisoner received the benefit. The young man was ably defended by Messrs. McCandless and McClowry. We hope, for the Bake of an honored father, and most respected family, that his present hberty may be used to restore confidence id his character; for however unwilling we are to believe he participated m the crime alleged, we are assured of his com panionship with bad young men. He will now nnderstandhow readily he may jeopardize liberty and reputation by associating with companies who are looked upon with suspicion; who fre quently escape, and leave those guilty of no other offence than association to pay tho penalty of the law.— Ckromcle. E3* A man was sent to the penitentiary for i two years, m Mississippi, the other day. for Stealing thirty cents worth of wood. Served him right. He didn't commit a gen tlemanly theft. If he had Btolen $30,000, he would have escaped the penitentiary, and be con sidered a smart business man. We are aston ished that the petty thieves do not learn wisdom from the success of their betters—in the profes sion. IJg*, We would call the attention of our friends ■ to the advertisement of Mr. Charles A. Moore, in another column. Mr. Moore is a yoong man of practical business talents, who has just com menced business on his own account; and he is eminently worthy of the publio support. Any articles of his manufacture may be relied on as of the best quality; and he is determined to sell for small profits. A Fine Desk.- —We yesterday observed a fine large deer in a cage m front of the" store of Mr. Bngaley, on Wood street. He is a pet animal, purchased by Mr. B. m Kentucky, and will have a home hereafter m that gentleman’s enclosures below Allegheny city. Poor deer I ho will find no congenial playmates m the neighborhood of V Pittsburgh. Gov- Jogpsios.—The American of last even ing says i—Gov. Johnston, we are greatly pleased to say, will locate himself, for the present at least, in this city, having rented Mr. Galway’s house on Penn street, below Wayne, and will remain a few days to prepare it for therecoption of his family. The Coobtet is Save.— Brackenndge and Craig-have closed their controversy about the History of Pittsburgh. We breathe freer and deeper as the great “ godlike” would say. But the question masked, where should both of them go to' now, inasmuch as the controversy is dosed? ■ rnm.pi.TT.. —This beautiful spectacle was © seen and admired by hundreds last week, but for some reason it was withdrawn before the , people were half satisfied with it. We hope Mr. Foster will bring it out again next week, as hundreds of people desire to see it again. ,■ : colored woman in Cincinnati darkened the eyes of her husband on last Sunday evening by throwing a pot of boiling water into his face.
