The steamer Brother Jonathan, from Chagres,
arrived this Morning, in command of Capt. Kilt.:
ridge, Capt. Willis having been left sick at
Kingston. She brings nothing later from Cali
fornia. Her dates from San Juan are to the
12th, and. from Kingston to the 21st. She
brings about 400 passengers, and a small amount
of specie on freight.
On the outward bound passage on the 4th of
November, Capt. Crockett, of Portland, Maine,
was lost overboard.
The steamer Cherokee, from New York, for
Chagres, touched at Kingston on the 18th.
Several cases of the abduction of ooloredper
sena for slaverypurposes by passengers on board
American vessels are spoken in the Jamaica pa
pers. .
The cholera still lingers in the island, and the
small pox continues to rage with unabated vir
ulence, in Duncan and Ulster' Spring districts.
FIRE IN CHARLESTON.
CHABLZSTON, Nov. 28

We were visited by a very destructive fire this
morning about 4or 5 o'clock. It broke out at
the corner of George and King streets, and con
sumed
the hat and clothing store of Brown &
Co., with their entire stook, valued at $6,000;
J. S. Chewin's clothing store, the building being
valued at $5,600 and stook at $10,0004 Mrs.
Hogan's millinery store ; Valentine Hyde's bas
ket and fruit store, loss about $2,000; and Ad-.
dison & Connor'e watch and jewelry store, who
toes about $BOO, the above property belonging
to H. Sc. C. Raymond & Co. and being insured
for about $6,000. The residence of David Lo
pez is injured to the amount of $2,000. The
hat store of Sohn Daily was saved, but the dock
was injured to the value 9f $2,000. Of the 111
surance, about $7,000 is in the Charleston Trust
South Carolina company; the other companies
are untouched.
FROM BAATIMORE.
BALTIMORE, Nov. 27.
The train of oars from the west, on the Balti
more and Ohio Railroad, ran off the track this
afternoon, twenty miles from this city, and sev
eral of the cars were completely broken to
pieces, and the locomotive considerably damaged.
None of the passengers were injured.
In the eastern part of the city this afternoon,
amen was killed in an affray by being stabbed.
We have no particulars. The murderer has
been arrested.
The day has been remarkably pleasant, and
very generally observed by our citizens, busi
ness being suspended.
STEAMBOAT COLLISION.
ST. Lome, Nov. 27
The steamers Archer, ascending, and Ver
non, descending. came in collision this morning
about 2 o'clock, five miles below the month of
tho Illinois river. The Archer was cut in two,
and sank in fifteen feet water, and all persons on
the lower decit were drowned.
ST. Loins, Nov. 28.
The following persons who were on board the
Archer are known to be lost: Jane Stayers, and
six children, from ten to twenty years of age;
Bosan Dick ; an Irish family of eight or nine
persons; and tea deck hands.
The total number drowned, so far as heard
from, is thirty. Samuel Stayers and Daniel
Dick and sister were saved. All the books and
papers belonging to the boat were lost.
CHRISTIANA RIOT CASES.
PIELIADELPFILt, Nov. 28.
In the CI. S. Circuit Court to-day, a jury was
empanelod and sworn in the case of Hannaway,
charged with treason at Christiana; and Henry
H. Hike, deputy marshal, called, who testified
at length to the circumstances of the affair and:
the part taken in it by the accused, who refused
to assist the officers when called on, and declar
ed the right of the colored people to defend
themselves—that the law ought not to be obey
ed. He stated minutely all the circumstances
attending the killing of Mr. Gorsuch, and the
subsequent arrests. He had not concluded when
the Court adjourned.

CHARLESTON, Nov. 28
The brig Galnare arrived to-day, bringing
dates from Havana to the 28d inst. The Cap
tain General had indicated to the American
Consnl that it was his intention to pardon Mr
Thrasher in a few days, on condition that he
lesie the Island. Twenty days after his release
would be given to settle his affairs there. The
pardon had caused great rejoicing among the
American residents. The Queen's birth day
(the 19th) was celebrated in Havana with great
pomp. The Captain General reviewed the
troops, and the city was full of rejoicing. .
