In order to ac complish this, they determined to have but one house in New Orleans to act as agent for ail the boats ; and pledging themselves not only not to employ men as runners; but, also, that they will encourage no-one .who does 80. Sun. Judge Larne may suppose that our Govern ment should apologize to a foreign power. His wish was, no doubt, "father to the thought"— But no apology has been made, nor will one be made in the terms demanded. The American Executive who would do so had better take ref uge among the butchers,of Cuba before he pro claims such degradation to his country. Al though opposed to Mr. Fillmore, we believe he has sufficient American spunk in him to answer the insolent demand in the language used by Gen. JACKSON to a similar piece of insolence from France—that the American • Government should never be degraded by an apology by him to a foreign power. So many new counterfeits are reeking their appearance in every section of the country, that .the plan of Mr. Atwater, of New Haven, for the prevention of the alteration of notes, &0., from a low. to a higher denomination, is eminently worthy the attention of banks and bankers. The following is a description of Mr. Atwater's "safety note" : Borders on the end of the note, in addition to the figures which indicate the value of the note —a single border for a one dollar bill—two bor ders for two dollars--and tire for five dollars.— These are at the left hand of the bill. For a ten dollar note there iB a single border on the right hand of the bill—two borders for a twenty dollar note---and so on. They are farther distinguish able by borders on the bottom. These borders change the position of the names of the Presi dent and Cashier, and also of other parts of the bill, so that the general appearance of each de nomination is entirely different from every other —although the piatures, fi gu res, and writings. MILLAR Al/RANGED 11Y MISS ht li. clyritastiT On the 4th of March, 1849, I bade farewell to my family and started for the Land of Gold.— Nothing of much Importance took place until we.reached the Missouri river. Our company wad known by the high sounding title of the Dubuque Emigrating Association. The name of our officer was Capt. Parker. While encamped on the banks of the Missouri we were amused by some Indiana, who came into camp, and per formed several wild dances. They had their' buffalo robes thrown around them ; their faces were painted; some stood still and sang in a vrild, strange way, while the others danced. One of the dancers every now and then bowed his head, exclaiming, boob boob. We visited the Mission ary Sabbath and day sohools, for the Indian' children. The children were neat and clean.= They sang several hymns for us, and we heard; the missionary, a very fine man, preach. This was at the Council Bluff Agency. We crossed. the Missouri river on the lstof April. and were now fairly on the Overland route to California. We arranged our camp in the following manner. The wagons, 21 in number, were placed in the form of a square. A rope was then drawn across the square, and another across it ; to these ropes the horses were tied. The tents were placed outside of the wagons. Oue of the men was made the sergent of the guard ; his difty was to call the men, who acted as guard. There were four, one to watch on each side of the square. They had to watch two hours, and wore then relieved by others. Our beds consist ed of buffalo skins, and blankets ; and we soon got used to resting on the hard ground. We now came to the Elk Horn river. We had to wait here to launch the ferry boat. In taking it over two of our men fell in, but we got them out without much damage. A large train passed us this evening. We came to the Troupe Fork, a branch of the Platte river. This is a very rapid stream, full of quicksands, and dangerous to cross. We heard of a great many accidents that had taken place here, but we crossed in a ferry Without any trouble, After we got over the Troupe Fork, a disagreement took place and Capt. Parker threw up his commission, and Capt. Hughert, a very fine man, was elected ; but alt our officers were fine fellow.; all went on w now. We were traveling a very sandy piece of road and met with S or 10 buffaloes, the first we had seen. Some of our boys were much ex cited by their appearance, and came near run ning their horses down. Several shots were fired, but the strangers made their escape. About noon of this day, we came to Wood river, and concluded to camp. Our camp presented a bu sy sceue. Some of the men were preparing for the next day's march ; some wore making bread ; others went to hunt, and brought in some buffs loe meat, which was pretty good. We had met with a good many signs of Indians, about this river. One was that the kinsoanie hushes, which grew in great numbers, had been pulled, and the bark scraped of for the Indians to smoke. We were therefore on the watch for them, and lay down with our minds much excited. In the course of the night we were alarmed by the re port of a gun, and the sound of confused voices ; we sprang up, feeling sure it was the Indians, but it turned out that one of the young men coming in from the night watch, slipped his gun in the tent where 3 or 4 men were sleeping. It went off; the contents passing through a tin, and then close by one of the sleepers. On the 24th of April one of our men, George W. Jorden, was taken sick. He was of a lively, merry dispo sition, and told me two days before he took sick, that he had a.firm assurance that he would get safe to California, make a fortune, and return home. One day I noticed that he seemed in more thou usual high spirits, laughing and joking. I took him aside and asked him the cause. lie said, • "Mr. Millar, the reason I act this way is, be cause I cannot bear to think of home." Poor fell 311 , we traveled four days with hint, then he grew so bad that we concluded to stop and camp out with him. The men were very kind, and showed great feeling for him. The weather was very cold, so we put a stove in his tent, and tried every way we could to snake him comforts ble. He had an excellent physician, Dr. Boon. After we stopped poor George became delirious, and when we went in to see him would exclaim in a loud voice, " How are you ? Sit down: make youreelf at home." These ravings were the last tones of that voice, which was soon to be hushed for ever on earth. Once only he spoke of home: this was before he became delirious. Some of the men heard him say, "Oh! I wish I was at home." That much loved home, so vainly re gretted, so much longed for, hie dying oyes were destined no more to look upon. It was very cold—so cold that we had to lift the sod and pile It to windward of the tent. Well, poor George grew rapidly worse; the Doctor said it VMS a congestion of the brain. lie sank very fast, and on the morning of the seventh day he died. This was the first death that took place in our train. The wagon that we hauled the corn in belonged to a Mr. White and a Mr. Car penter. The bottom of the wagon was composed of walnut planks. They kindly gave it to us to make a coffin; some of us made it. We then , dressed the body in his usual clothes, wrapped him in a winding sheet., and laid him in the coffin. We then formed in a procession. and walked to the grave, which was dug on the side of the road, so that those of his friends who might come after us would see it as they passed by, which some of them did. It was a beautiful sunshiny day, and the contrast between the happy ones at home, rejoicing at the first of May, and our sorrowing hearts, was indeed great. Well, we walked in couples silently to the grave, and then lowered the body gently down. After we had laid him down in his last resting place. we stood around the open give and sang several verses, of which I remember but one. It was as follows: Shed not a tear, o'er your mend'', early bier. \Vben I am gone, when I am gone, Smile if the glow-tolling bell you ehoaid hear, When I am gone, when I am gone. \Veep not for Inc., when ye stand round my gm Think, who line died hie beloved to more, e Think of th crow w he nth renamed shal; hr IVheil I am go n e. e n I am gone. The music was very sad and sorrowful, and sounded mournfully in that lonely place, by the banks of the wild lonely river Platte. Nearly eve ry eye in the company was wet with tears. We had no planks to lay over the coffin, so wo put some poles over it, and thou some grass. The grave was then tilled up and sodded over. A board, with his name, age, and the name of the town he came from, with that of the disease of which he died, cut in letters upon it, was then placed at the head of the grave : and I got the boys to out four willows, about 6 feet high, and plant them round the grave. They would shade it af ter a while. We then turned away and left him. Oh I it, was heart -breaking to leave him lying there, ho that we all thought so much of; so lately so fall of life, but now dead, and to be left there alone so far from home, where his wife and little children could never come to cry over his grave. Then, too, the agonizing thought, that, perhaps, this too might be our own fate, that we might suddenly be called to lie down in death on those lonely plains ; never more in this world, to see wife and children, or sweet home. Oh! that was a sad day for us all. We were comforted, however, by the hope that while'we were mourning, he wee rejoicing with God; for George was, I have reason to think, a Christian. Ho was also a member of tbe Methodist Episco pal Church. His brother, Bunyan Jordan, a man much loved by all, was in our company, and took care of George, in his last sickness. After the funeral, we moved our camp_ about three miles, to where there was some clear water; for that of the Platte was too muddy: and we wanted to - Wash OW clothes and prepare for our journey. On the day Jordan took sick, some of the train, on aeconnt of their wagons being too heavy to travel with ours, staid back to recruit theirhorses on the dry grass, which some of us thought a strange way of recruiting horses. Two of our companyhad been out hunting, and returning to the old damp; saw'ordan's grave ; they had not thought heves dangerausly ill, when they left the camp: , We were very. uneasy about them, . an d fowling next wanting, that theYlo not got . . I lay in a wagon . that night; and did not get up, but I have seen them in droves. Their meat tasted like roast beef, only very poor. We saw quite a number of antelopes. They are pretty, graceful creatures. The taffy way our hunters could catch them, was to steal away tosomehill, hide in the long grass, and then place a handkerchief or hat on the ram rod of their guns, and wave it overhead. -The antelopes would gather round; aid wonder and I gaze at the strange appearance, - till a shot fired in among them, would lay some unfortunate vic tim low. Once our men tried tipen a number of them in a gap. In the ,Rocly Mountains, but the graceful creatures tossed ,their heads, and bounded away. The road was very sandy ; for 200 miles not a I stick of timber could be seen. We Staid one • day opposite Fort Laramie, and washed all our clothes—no very pleasant job, but had to be done. We then crossed the river to Fort Laramie, and staid here three or four hours. It is a neat, clean looking place. We bought some corn at six dollars a bushel. After we had got some dis tance from the Fort, I believe it was the first night, Capt.' Hughert threw up*his Commission, and we elected ,Capt. Burton .to ,be Captain of the train. After two or three. days' travel, we began to draw near Laramie's Peak. This was ' a high mountain, which proudly lifts its head above the rest. We had seen it before we reach ed the Fort. We had now got through the.Rlsok Hills, a wild, desolate region of country which seems hardly fit for Indians or wild animals to roam over. We encamped on the bank of a small stream, where there was no grass for the horses. Here the Captain gave orders that whoever got ready first, was to go on and see if they could find grass. The next morning three wagons started. I was with them. We went about six miles, found grass, and stopped to let our horses feed, and .to wait for the train. We waited about three hours, and then went on, expecting them to overtake us. We came up to three wag ons, containing some families. The ladies and children, as well ' as the men, were very much sun•burnt. They were churning, for they had cows to draw their wagons instead of oxen, and I must say that cows stood the journey much better than the oxen. We only staid a few min utes, and then went on. We crossed the Platte river, at the mouth of Deer Creek, and met sonic men, who a short time before had killed' a griz zly bear. They fired seven times, before they killed him. The last shot broke his back, and brought him down, as he was jumping to catch I one of the horses by the nose. We traveled about 12 miles up the North side of the river, and then left the river Platte, by whose lonely waters our lost companion Jordan was sleeping the death sleep. Presently we'oame across some Mountaineers. They had been trapping in the Rooky Mountains for some time; one of them for twenty years. They gave us some dried buffalo meat. The next day we came to the Poisonous Springs; but they would have been better named the Poison ous Lake. The water was clear and beautiful ; we drank of it and gave to our horses ; but when they got in and stirred up the water with their feet, it turned quite black. We dare not let thorn drink it then, for fear it would kill them. The next place we came to, was the Willow Springs. This was the best water we had all along the road, clear and good, and of a pleasant taste. Willow trees grew profusely around. Here our mountain friends left us to hunt buffa loes and dry the meat. Presently we came to Independence Rock. This is an immense long rock, covering, I should suppose, about sixty acres. It lies all alone, not another rock near. It appears to be composed of gravel cemented together. There were thousands of names cut on it. Three or four of us went to the top. We had a fine view of the surrounding country, but saw nothing alive but some antelopes and a cat, which we suppose some of the emigrants had lost. The poor animal was quite wild and hid itself in a crevice in the rock. We bathed in some pools of rain water, on the top of the rock, which the sun had warmed. We stayed here till Monday, and here the train overtook us on Sab bath night At the rook we saw more signs of Indiana, where they had dragged their tent poles. We left the balance of the train behind and went on till we came to a very muddy stream; here our horses mired down ; so that we had considerable trouble getting them out. We were now in the heart of the Rocky mountains. At some places the rocky hills towered up to a great height on each side. Over head frowned immense preci pices, rook upon rook. Massive piles had fallen to the ground. The hills on each side were marked with the places where the mountain tor rents had rushed down. There were a great many pine trees growing here. ° Several graves were scattered along. At one place there wee the grave of a young boy about 14. Anoth er was of a woman who bad bees thrown out of a wagon and killed by the horses running over her. Some of the graves Lad been torn up by the wolves, and the corpses dragged out and eaten• by them; the bones were lying about. On the Platte, we found the grave of a man; the wolves had dug to get him, but he was buried with a canoe over him, and when they came to it they could not get him out We met 3or 4 wagons containing Mormons, leaving the Salt Lake and going to the States. We found the head of a mountain sheep here. It was so large and heavy we could not help noticing it. A man could hardly lift it. We now' went through the South Pass. I went some distance above and saw a pass through the mountains called "Hell's Gate." It is about 5 yards wide. On either aide are massive rocks ae straight up, as if they had been cut with a knife. We had been grad ually ascending, and wore now at the summit of the Rocky Mountains. Here wo saw the stream, at one side hastening off to theAtlnntic, while those on the other were winding off to the Pacific Ocean. After while we came to Green riv er. After being among the dismal rooks, and frowning hills, it was quite refreshing to behold the clear waters surrounded by the fresh green cotton wood trees. It reminded me of the green hills around my home. The ferry here was tended by some Frenchmen who had Indian wives. We came to the Black Forks. Here we had a groat deal of trouble in crossing. We took off ono of the wagon beds and turned it into a boat, piled our things into it; then one of the men swam over with a rope, and drew it over. After all was over, we got in and were drawn over. The wheels of the agons were fastened to ropes, and dragged over w . It was hard work—the water very cold. On the Ist of June I was taken sick with the mountain fever. This fever is common among those who cross the mountains. They generally have it when they get to the South Pass. Sev eral times that day, we had to cross a creek.— Borne places we hung on to the wagons; others we got over on logs, and others we had to wade in the cold water. Oh how my limbeached, how weary, sick and wretched I felt. We were now near the Mormon City, and I got the boys to pitch our tent, and went to bed; but not to sleep. I suffered much with a burning fever and chills. The next evening, a Mormon lady, and herstm in-law, came with a wagon and took me to their own home, 11 miles south of the City. Here I remained 6 days, and here lULUA notice the pre serving care of a kind God. Had I been eo sick at other places in my journey, I might have died, but hero 1 was kindly nursed, and found a home among strangers. The City was quite large, but much scatiercd,--every house, standing in its own garden. The fame looked very well. They were watered by tho streams from the mountains. The wheat looked very well. It was a grand and beautiful eight to stand in one of those green wheat fields and gaze upon the glorious scene. Around were the green fields, waving in the bright sunlight that rested on the city, each horse nestled in its own garden bowers, while all around the city stood the everlasting mountains keeping guard, as it were, over it. They tow ered up, height upon height, their tops covered with snow, while afar off about2o miles glittered the far famed Salt Lake. Long shall I remember that City, among those sno' covered moun tains. - • For tire Morilinlg Port 4k• . • ...,...,,,,, •• : :A1 - -*A , "; . -:•• • , :• - • .7 " , :x';. 7-1. ...,•izz...::: - .'::' , .' 7 ;,'-...--; . When Brother Jonathan heard the reproach and felt the sting, he was not want ing at the starting, nor was he behind at the winning post. If be was slow to enter the lista, not the less fast was he to contend for and carry off the prize. The honor of America was nobly represented, and vindicated by its triumph at the close of that Great Exhibition,, in the com mencement of which it was so reproachfully and so invidiously presented by our contemporary under a cloud. " We are not pretending here to catalogue the. achievements of American art and industry, as so fully developed in their triumphs, already published, in the Exhibition. We leave that grateful task to the more capable and scientific hands of the editor of the 'Art JournaL' We have ourselves some interest in the matter of. the American share in the Exhibition.
