Vicars, iiiippeatii that &alit* eiditenviiitliriot:
so great, and contracts are-now made at prices
below $5,00... - We may expect, then, that Mr,
Hayes.will pack his 2.800 hogs in Peoria. .
From the best information we can gather, we
are led to believe , thpt the number of hogs
this' county and in the counties immediately sur
rounding Peoria, is aagreat as last year if, not
greater, and, inapality are much superior. We
have heard 'of hut few contracts. A few lots of
from;2oo to 600 have been bargained for at $4.
Our pork dealers feel .disposed to hang back--
and those- who have come here with a view of
packing, have not yet (xtend the market very
vigorously.
NOVEMBER 18
In Alton, hogs command from $4 to $6 `f 100.
Cattle, $3,50®53,75.
Burington and Quincy—heavy hogs at $4.
On the Wabash, hogs are offered at $4, with
but few sales. - _Packers ale holding off for $3,76,
at.which they would take any quantity.
The Preto is published on the Illinois River.
We quote the following from the Oquaka Specta
tor, published on the MississipPi, which shows
that the prides on either stream are nearly the
same and alarmingly. high
"Several of our Merchants are in the market,
and have already engaged a large number of
hogs. The prices paid, $4,25 100 lbs., are
a little higher than any other point on the river,
above the Itapids--althOugh many are yet hold
ing back for higher prices."
These prices are, no doubt, startling to our
packers and Pork dealers ; but, when calmly
considered we do not believe that there is any
ground for alarm.
But a few years have passed since the farmers
of the West had to sell their corn for ten or
twelve cents a briaheL Then, they found it more
profitable to put it into hogs and sell the hogs at
$1,60 or $2,00 3it 100 lbs. But, a change has
taken place in the spirit of trade in the West as
well as in other, places. The prices of ruin
have more than doubled.. The farmer now re
ceives from 26 . t0 30 cents for his corn, and all
other kinds of grain in proportion. With these
prices offered him for the products of his farm,
he concludes that he can make more by raising
grain than raising hogs, and if he brings the
latter into market, he requires a remunerat
ing price for them. Hence the high prices of
the present season.
We feel confident that the crop of hogs in the
West, the present season, will fall far short of
the demand, and we do not think that the pres
ent high prices should deter our dealers from
making their contemplated investments.
We find the following tabular statement in.the

doubt, be interesting to our mercantile readers.

But during the month of July last, there was a very large

this deficiency has not been lessened. It would seem,
then, that high ratan here not checked consty*ption ;
and our readers can draw their own inferences as to
the probability of prices this coming season being PUB
mined or receding, as compared with last year. r It is
true, there is a continued stringency in our Money mar

Produce, must feel the effect► of it.
THE ERIE OBSERVER.
We wish to have no controversy with any pro
fessedly Democratic paper; and only referred to
this sheet, a short time since, in a manner which
it terms not very gracious, because of its very
plain declaration that, if Mr. BIICELLNAIi should
be nominated the Whigs would carry the State.
We could very easily find other grounds than
this on which to base a controversy; but 'think
that no good to the Democratic party can result
from such a contest. Those who are determin
ed to oppose Mr. Buchanan at all hazards may
quarrel with his friends as-long as they please.
It is-spirpri;ilege to do'Sillint The consist
eney:of-a.profissing Democrat who shall do so,
may well be qttestioned. The Erie Obaerver,
however; would not be so considered : for it
says that when the nomination for President
shall be made, it wiknot be behind us in EMS-
Wining that nomination. finch, at leait, we are
willing to believe is its meaning, though its lan
guage is somewhat ambiguous.

nounce the fact that this immense steamer is to
be under the command of that popular, gentle-
Manly and 'experienced' officer, 'Capt. War: J.
Kotrirrn, - 'ore feel certain that confidence will be
given to her movements at once.
The Pittsburgh is the ldngest boat built at this
city; ` having cabiri of 200 feet in length, with
a corresponding height. and width. The cabin is
superbly finished and furnished with every com
fort and convenience that the heart could desire.
Great credit is due to Mr. Devil) Bourns, under
whose special supervision the steamer Pittsburgh
was built.' The following facts in relation to this
model steamer are taken from yesterday's Jour
nal:
The hull of the Pittsburgh was built by
Messrs, Porter & Co., Shousetown. Length; of
hull, 296 feet ; beam, 31i feet ; extreme width,
60 feet; hold 7 feet; cabins will accommodate
130 passengers with berths.
Engines and doctor, by James Nelson & Co
Two cylinders, 31 inches in diameter, with a
stroke of 8 feet. These cylinders have the new
"balance valve." Her boilers are five in num
ber, with a diameter of 42 inches and 30 feet
long—double fines of course. Her water wheels
are 82 feet in diameter, with a bucket of 12i:ft.
Besides the doctor, the auxiliary engine to sup
ply the boilers, the Pittsburgh has a complete
Fire Engine, And all needful provision agaitst
fire.
The cabins were built by James Mißinger, un
der the superintendence, as we hue intimated,
of Mr. C. Coehring, from orietdit'd*Mitigre by
himself. The painting of' the ‘oabins and the
beautiful stained glass, are the work of Messrs.
Rhodes & Nelson, and in both branches they
have done themselves great-credit.
The looking glasses and the looking glass
work, together with, the gilding of the cabin, are
to be credited to Messrs. J. J. Gillespie & Co.,
but the exceecUnt.excellence and beluty of the
work entitles Mr. Chapman, under whose super
intendence it was done, to honorable notice.
The superb furniture of the ladies' cabin, (ex
cepting the piano, from John H. Mellor,) and all
the cabin furniture, came from T. B. Young &
Co. The rich upholstery is the handiwork of E.
Edmuuson.
The handsome chandeliers, lamps, &0., to
gether with the whole queens - ware service, were
furnished by Massey & Caldwells.
The glassware is from the manufactory ' of
Messrs. Curling, Robertson & Co.: the brass
work and bells from A. Fulton, of course ; and
the blocks and rigging from Davago & Roberts.

ted In a private letter from Yarmouth, Engin l nd,
dated the 7th ult , written by a lady, and gi4ing
an account of the disastrous results of the
shipwrecks upon the east coast
"Last Friday, a dear little babe, supposed to
be about four months old, was picked up 'tithe
roads, off Yarmouth. Its long clothes prevented
it from sinking; it was fast asleep and almost
benumbed with cold. There was no trace of any
ship in sight, or of any boat for miles around,
and it was supposed that the Vessel from which
it had been thrown had sunk, and that all hands
perished. The captain who picked it up lives at
Yarmouth, and intends to rear it as his own.

The depth at which our Illinois coal is dug, is
but a pin scratch on the globe compared with
the diggings in the English coal mines. One
shaft near Sunderland, is, perhaps, the deepest
in the world. The coal was first found one thou
sand six hundred feet below the surface,
and it is now worked at one thousand
seven hundred and one thousand eight hun
dred feet I These English mines employ large
bodies of workmen. In one there are one hun
dred and thirty-six men and eighty-five boys
below ground, engaged in fourteen different
kinds of labor, and one hundred and twelve men
and twenty eight boys above ground, in seven
teen occupations, and three hundred and sixty
one workmen in all. The names of the classes
of workmen are singular: under-viewers, banks
men, drivers, hewers, putters, headsmen, half
marrows, foals, stoppers of door-keepers, &c.
The hewers are the actual miners of the coal,
and receive about 20s. a week, working six
hours a day, with coal and house-rent free.
Children ander eight years of age are now ex
cluded by law, and the barbarous harnessing of
females to the coal-carts In the pits, is prevented.
Our . Illinois coal diggings ore comparatively dry.
The English mines often pump one thousand gal
lons a minute ;or six thousand tons a day. One
near Durham,, pumped twenty-six thousand
seven hundred tons of water per diem ! The use
of steam-power in our coal mining is yet to
come. In the North of England, engines of two
hundred and fifty horse power are in common
use at the pumps. "At Percy Main, near New
castle, engines of five hundred and sixty-six
horse power are in operation, four hundred and
forty horse power being employed in pumping
alone." But little capital is employed in the
business here but it is estimated that the coat of
a first class English colliery, including the shaft, 1
machinery, houses, wagons, &0., &0., is !from
£40,000 to £150,000. The deepest coal is the
best. As our Illinois beds are worked deeper
they will furnish an article as good and ere long
better, than the Pennsylvania coal. Adjoining
the great'unworked colliery, which stretches across
our State from central lowa to northern; Ken
tucky, manufacturing cities will soon arise as
busy as Pittsburgh, perhaps as smoky.- And
trl
coal, more and more valuable for manufae ng
purposes, for solidity, density, heat-givin &c.,
will be brought I, as the progress of our anti),
western manufacturing towns makes it de
mend for it.— Galena (Ill.) Daily Advertiser:
