The longer and the closer we took at the Presidential-confeaf,Ake more apparent it becomes, hat the only candidate who stands the shadow_ of a chance against Illi. Buchanan is Senator Douglasir. -. The The Democratic Union, at Harrisburg, in a very, excellent article about Mr: Bucesses, says: This gentleman has 'iendsiett diStinguisheei services to the State and the Nation during the last thirty years, beoth at home andabroad. His career in the NationilMinse of ttePresentativeri, from the day he first went there, was biilliant 'and commanding. He early espoused-the cane' of the patriot Jackson, and was honored and esteemed by the old hero to the last hour of his existence. * • * * * Whilst in the Senate house he ;shed ustre on his native. State, hythe manner in which he met and refuted the arguments of the Federal leaders and from the day that he left it Pennsylvania , hits occupied an inferior position in :.that As a member of the illustrious administration of James R. Polk, he stood forth in a Cabinet of giants, a head and siren:olden taller than all his compeers; and his able State papers exhibit him before the world as one of the greatest of Amer ican statesmen. , During all this time he pursued the same hon est, honorable, upright course, which has distin guished his whole life. His private character is without spot or blemish, his - basest revilers not being able to point to a single stain upon his re putation. His whole public life is equally unex ceptionable. Irrit to be wondered at, therefore, that the eyes of the people of Pennsylvania and the whole Union should be turned towards this great and good man as their leader hi the campaign of 18521' Public sentiment every where seems to be settling down in his favor, and hence the bit• ternesa of the factions few in Pennsylvania that oppose him, but who fortunately are as a drop in the bucket or a grain of sand on the seashore. The Fulton Democrat, in a long and excellent article announcing its preference for the Presi dency, says:— In accordance with the repeatedly expressed opinions of the People of this county, and in accordance with our own feelings and sentiments, we this week place the name of JAMBS .BIJ CHANAN at our mast-head, as our choice for President of the United States in 1852. In ad vocating the claims of Pennsylvania's Favorite Son, we do but JUSTICE to a great national and patriotic Democrat, and to the great National Democratic party and its time-honored princi ples. Mr. BUOHANAII has long been known as one of the ablest and most fearless defenders of the latter—never hesitating nor equivocating, but bold in his advocacy of Democratio doctrine, and firm as a rook in carrying it out. * We honor hire as ft NAB in the social walks of life, whose private character is pure and cm sullied, and whose benevolence is unbounded. As a Patriot and Statesman, in the purity of his motives and the honesty of his heart, lie has no superior. Love of Country is a prominent trait in his character. * * * * * * Pennsylvania has claims on her sister States that should be cancelled—long have they been neglected or set aside—and she now presents her most talented and popular son, Jame Be cnisys, as her choice for the Presidency. She demands his nomination as a RIGHT, not as a favor. Since the formation of the Government, a period of, upward of seventy years, the great State of Pennsylvania has not been honored by the elevation of one of her sons, to the Chief Magistracy of the Union. And yet none have been more loyal to the Constitution and the Laws than she, and nowhere are the people more pa triotic. No President has ever been elected di rectly by the people without her vote—and that vote has been almost uniformly cast for a Dem ocrat. Whilst we advocate the rtairtis of Mr. BU CHANAN, and believe that his nomination would lead to a glorious Democratic triumph, we shall not disparage the claims of CASS, DOUGLASS, -HOUSTON, BUTLER, FOOTE and others, who are named in connection With the same office. The %VOA Chester Jrffertonian leads off in an article on the Presidency, in a very encouraging manner. This paper has long preferred General CABS to any other candidate, and is not now committed against bins ; but pays to Mr. Be CITANAN the following just tribute: "Of James Buchanan we have one thing to say. Whatever may be his position eleewhon, he has a strong hold upon the affections of the people of Chester county. It would be idle, un profitable and foolish to deny it. We have bad considerable intercourse with the people of the county, during the late contest, and this admis sion is the result. And why should we hesitate ? Be is a Pennsylvanian, and of him every Penn sylvanian has a right to be proud; and we are proud- We do not think that location alone should be looked to; if we did, we should ask the nomination as a right. We admit still furth er, that since the election the strength of Mr. Buchanan has increased in this county." Baltimore end Ohio Railroad We learn from the Baltimore Patriot that about the let of next month, the Baltimore and Ohio railroad will be opened to Cheat river, from which a line of stages may run (five miles) to the Northwestern Turnpike, and thence to Park sburgh ; and on the let of April next the road will be completed to Tygart's Valley, on the Northwestern Turnpike, about one hundred miles from Parkersburgh. A daily line of cars will then be run to Tygart's Valley, and the line of stages, over the Northwestern Turnpike, will take passengers to Parkersburg, whence a daily line of steamboats will take them to Cin cinnati. The superintendent in an advertisement says : The proprietors of steamboats and stage lines wishing to run in connection with this road, are advised, that through tickets will be made from Baltimore to Cincinnati and back, including Washington, to go into effect on the opening of the road to the point named." A Beautiful Painting We dropped into the studio of our friend E. Foxasres., on Saturday, to look at a painting of the Virgin Mary, just finished by that young gentleman for a church in Butler county. The canvass is 6 feet 7 inches by 7 feet 2 inches in size, and the principal figure is nearly as large as life. The Virgin is represented as being car ried by a company of angels to Heaven. As a work of art, we think it will bear a critical ex amination. It is warm and life-like, without any of the sombreness that is usually seen in paintings of that description. All who have ex amined this beautiful painting, award to Mr. Foerster great credit. As an artist, he is cer tainly working his way to fame and fortune.— We have heretofore spoken favorably of some of his paintings, and we now take pleasure in again calling attention to his merits. Mr. F.'s studio is on Fifth street, opposite our counting room, where the picture of the Virgin - Mary may be seen for a few days. Philadelphia and Pittsbergh. We take especial pleasure in directing the attention of our readers and the traveling public generally, to the advertisement of the Pennsyl vania Railroad Company, in this paper, signed by THOMAS MOOB.E, agent, announcing the winter arrangement between Philadelphia and Pitts burgh. By this announcement it will, be per. ceived that on the Ist of December next passen gers will be carried between the points named in 24 hours ! with only 28 miles staging over the turnpike. This is certainly bringing the two great citie?of our good old Commonwealth very close together. It will not be very long before theirtin Horse will make an uninterrupted pas sage between the Delaware and the Ohio.— Huns t - ger F. Friendship.derives all its beauty and strength from the qualities of the tretut, or a virtu-r one or lovely disposition: or should these be wanting, some shadow of them must be pres ent; it can never dwell long in a bad heart or mean disposition. It is a passion limited to the noble part of the species, for it can never co exist with vice or dissimulation. Without vir tue, or the - supposition of it, friendship- is only a mercenary league, or a tie of interest, which must, of course, dissolve when that interest de cays, or subsists no longer. It is a composition of the noblest passions of the mind. A just taste and love of virtue, good sense, a thorough candor and benignity of heart, and a generous sympathy of sentiment and affection, are the essential ingredients of this noble passion.— When it originates from love, and esteem is strengthened by habit, and mellowed by time, it yields infinite pleasure, ever new and over growing. It is the best support amongst the numerous trials and vicissitudes of life, and gives a relish to most of our engagements. What can be imagined more comfortable than to have a friend to console us in afflictions, to advise with in doubtless cases, and share oar felicity 7 What firmer anchor is there for the mind, tossed like a vessel on the tumultuous waves of contin gencies, than this ! It exalts our nobler pas sions, and weakens our evil inclinations : it as sists us to run the race of virtue with a steady, undeviating coerce. From loving, esteeming, and endeavoring to felicitate particular people, a more general passion will arise for the whole of mankind. Confined to the society of a few, we look upon them as the representatives of the many, and from friendship learn to cultivate philanthropy. Beautifully Said We make the following beautiful extract on the Homestead Exemption Law, from a let ter recently written by Judge Dillabunty, of Tennessee Secure to each family whose labor may acquire it, a little spot of free earth that it can call its own—that will be an asylum in times of adver sity, from which the mother and the children, old age and infancy, can still draw sustenance and claim protection, though misfortune may rob them of all else, and then feel they are still free, still entitled to walk the green earth, and breathe the free air of heaven, in defiance of the power and potency of accumulated wealth and the domineering of the pretending and ambitious. The sacredness of that consecrated spot will make them warriors in time of eternal strife.— " Those shooks of corn," said Xenophon, " in spire those who raise them with courage to de fend them. The largest of them in the field is as a prize exhibited in the middle of the stage to crown the conqueror." Secure a home to every family whose honest labor may obtain one, against the weakness, vices or misfortunes of the fathers, and you will rivet the affeotion of the child in years of manhood by a stronger bond than any consideration that could exist. He will remember where he gamboled in his early youth, the stream upon whose flowery banks he has played, and in whose limpid waters he has bathed, and the family altar where he felt a mother's kiss and a mothers's love, and the green spot within that little homestead where sleep the loved and the, lost. Fruit Trees by the Roadside The practice of setting out fruit trees by the roadside cannot be too highly recommended. In many parts of Europe this practice is general and the fatigued traveler acknowledges the well timed hospitality thus afforded him. The excuse. is often made that the fruit will be stolen ; but if the practice was general, the amount of fruit taken by wayfarers, would only be what com mon hospitality would freely grant ; and in Ger many every third tree, by custom, may be taboo ed; the owner of the adjoining farm ties a piece of rag to one of the lo wer limbs of the tree, and no traveler will touch it. Travelers inform us that no reward will tempt a German stage driver to regale his passengers with fruit from a mark ed tree—two out of three being left to his use if de sired renders the selected tree safe from the chance of being used. The amount of fertilizing mate rial continually wasted upon roads would be available by such a practice, and nothing but ex treme selfishness will prevent the use of these materials for public benefit. Many of the larger sort of fruit trees are highly ornamental and af ford fine shade, while the use of fruit trees alone for shade, Bite the display of costly mansions, only the poor to envy, without adding maw:taffy to their comfort or health.— Working Farmer. Cane to tr. Buchanan. We had a visit yesterday from Dr. Leib, of Lucas county, lowa, who was on his way east, and is the bearer of a splendid hickory cane to the Hon. James Buchanan, of Pennsylvania, from the sterling democracy of that new and growing county. We learn from him that a large por tion of the democrats of the Western portion of lows are the warm and devoted friends of that distinguished statesman, and advocate his nomi nation by the Democratic National Convention, not only on account of his commanding talents and devotion to the great interests of democracy, but because of his availability and devotion to the constitution and the Union. This tribute of respect will be more highly appreciated by Mr. Buchanan than a more costly gift- The stick, a a rough, plain hickory club, emblematic of the democracy in lowa, from whom it comes, and is moreover a fitting tribute to the man who resem bles Gen. Jackson so closely in character, and who, if elected to the Presidency, will, we feel assured, carry out the true doctrines of the con stitution with as much firmness and energy as when Jaokson himself was at the helm to guide the ship of State through all her storms and troubles.—St. Louis Union, Noy. 71/i. DISTEMISING Ai:OTENT. —On Monday last, a child of Samuel Wray, aged seven months, was instantly killed, and a son aged seven years, se riously injured by the upsetting of a wagon.— Mr. Wray was removing his family to a farm known as the "old Hamm place," in Franklin township, which he had recently purchased, and the roads being slippery from repents rains and snows, the wagon in which they were riding overset, and the above was the fatal result. The accident happened in the neighborhood of East Liberty. The wounded boy was conveyed to the residence of Mr. Wm. M'Gill, of that town, and Drs. Cummings and Stahl were immediately sent for and all other timely aid rendered. The boy is still living, we believe, but serious appre hensions are entertained for his recovery. DIAPASON OF DAUGHININ.-Ail ancient writer has remarked that the five vowels form a diapa son for the laugh in general. According to this singular observer, man laughs in A, woman in E, the devout woman in I, the countryman in 0, and the old woman in 11. We should, however, observe that the first vowel must be sounded like the Italian A, or like that letter in the word father, which is the sound given to this keystone of knowledge in almost all languages but our own.
