Columbus is, said to have been the largest and
most pliable elephant in the United States.—
He is supposed .to hare been 100 years old. His
weight wassfive tons, and he was valued at $15,-
000. When creasing mie of the streams in Adams,
the bridge give way, and the elephant was pre
cipitated 'some fifteen feet into . the water. The
itdury:received in'consequence of the accident is
said to have caused his death, and it is rumored
that the owners of the animal bare prosecuted
the town sif Adams for damages.

for the week ending on the 28th, showed a fair
demand, but prices were. weak and irregular.
Holders were pressing their stocks on the mar
ket, and a decline of RN had beentnibMitted
to. Sea Island was scarce, and dear. The to
' nil sales of the week•were 30,000 bales, of which
speculators took 2,000, and exporters 6,000.
The sales on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday, amounted to 27,000 bales. The
market was extremely dull, and prices favored
buyers. Quotations are—fair Orleans bid ; fair
Upland bid : Middling Orleans 4 11-16 d; Up..
land ; inferior and ordinary 81fg4d. The
present stock is estimated at 730,000 bales, of
which 434,000 are American.
• Breadstulls...Wheat and Flour have declined

the latter. Good quality Baltimore and Phila

ing the Hungarian refugees lately released with
Kossuth, and Mrs. Capt. Burlingame, whose hus
band was lost overboard from the barque Alex-
Ina, from New York, on the 13th of Oct., near
Gibraltar.

By a special messenger from Dolawarecounty,
it is ascertained that there is a majority in that
county against Forsythe and Patterson, Whigs,
for Secretary of State and Comptroller. Chat
field, Democrat, has 2200, and McAlpine 2000.
It is now thought that the Whigs have the Canal
Board; and that they have both branches of the
Legislature is almost certain.
