Imperial Government at St. Peterebargh, its intimate friend and ally of Austria; the poltroon President of the French Despotism, the rotten monarchists of England, and such Whip in this country as are continually manifesting sympathy for those in Europe who are grinding the poorto the earth, and becoming fat upon the misery of , the millions. From the moment of the embarkation of this truly great man upon the Mississippi, rumors of a character designed to reflect diihonor upon him have been freely circulated—especially in England and through the columns of monarchist papers. These rumors were very freely taken up here, and have gone the rounds of the Fed eral papers of the country,—in some cases with out comment; but in most cases, reflecting very severely upon Rossi:mi. He has been by these papers virtually pronounced a humbug and an impostor: and every expression that could be used to reflect dishonor upen hlm has been freely used. There have been few professedly Whig papers that have accorded to him any merit. Indeed we know of but one. This state of facts leads us to look not at MB ran but at run cause for this state of feeling and senti ment.. We think we can find a ground upon which to explain it : but the reason must be sought for in ceases that lie deep and hidden. The enemies of Republicanism in:France, in 1798, were the ultra Royalists of all Europe, and the Federalist fathers of the National Re publicans and Whigs of America. These always have fraternised with monarchy, and they ever will do so. While they can see great wrongs to be feared at the hands of the People, they fear nothing from Monarchy or oven Despotism. ' We have no means of knowing the precise grounds upon which Rosso= has acted,—which has even rise to the reports that have reached us in connection with his embarkation, &e. upon the Mississippi: but this we do know, —because his whole life bears testimony to the tact,—that he is a highly cultivated, in telligent, bold, invnleive, and nobly gener inisianlnded and self-'b.\ordfloing man : that he pas--preferred the cause of the suffering masses, Anil with It the sacrifice of all the comfort, l and . 40c . : and . luxury that ho might have nsioyed, lto the cause of the tyrant oppressors, whipitiolddletter and enchain not only lmman 1b04014-: - tint also the immortal mind:of uau. VORNE We have several times mentioned the name of . our able and estimable contemporary of the Pennsylvanian, in connection with the office of Clerk of the House of Representatives at the city of Washington. We again refer to the matter, in order to lend our feeble aid in overcoming those who are now misrepresenting him on ac count of a late speech in New York ;—more par titularly, because they can really say nothing against him. In that speech the Herald reported him as having said that ..he would rather vote for the worst Demostrat, than for the best Whig." On fleeing the Herald containing this, Col: Fee ney promptly and flatly denied having made use of that expression ; but admits thathemay have said "be would rather vote for the worst Demo crat politically. than for the beat Whig political ly," for this is a common expression with him. The Herald's reporter then made oath to tha:cor rectuess of hie report. And the Philadelphia Sun, a Whig Notice paper, declares that it would sooner take the bare-word of the Pennsyfranian than the oath of the Herald. Other Whig papers take about the eamo grounds.
