The Phttetecurgh maid StenbenTate 1:1M!
.We are glad to learn.that the Directors of this
Road are vigorouely.prosecuting their surveys,
and that a part of the work will be actually com
menced within two months. No more important
roathan this can be projected for the interests
of Pittsburgh. Had this Road but been complef
ed, him different would have SiengasTinanami
turing and commercial life of oar City for the
past three months! Instead of a stagnation,
amounting almost to a business death, we would
have had a life of stirring golden prosperity that
woulcidiave lifted us even beyond the influence
of that depression which,' for some time'pa.st,
has been settling down upon the monetary affairs
of the commercial World.. There is no city in
the Union—there is no point of country any
where, which has, from its position, a larger In
herent capacity for continued prosperity, inde
pendent...of- external influences, than Pittsburgh,
if she were only resolutely to set about making
use of what she has. But our purpose is to give
an extract from a letter from a gentleman of
Washington county to a friend in Pittsburgh:
"Since the survey has been commenced, I have
made it my duty again to travel over the propos
ed routes of the Rail Road from Pittsburgh to
ißtenbenville, and have frequently met the En
..glneer parties now engaged in the experimental'
surveys: Ido assure you that rough and for
bidding as are the hills opposite the City of
Pittsburgh, there is no route of forty miles in
Western Pennsylvania, where a first-class Rail
Road can be made at a less expense than can
this from Pittsburgh to Steubenville. Tho mo
ment you get clear of the hills opposite to and
facing your city (which, I understand, MID be
readily done,) you will be able to con-street a
Road of a grade of a most moderate character,
to the Ohio river opposite to Steubenville, at a
moderate cost Your people stand on the river
bank, and look at the rugged precipices opposite,
and without looking farther, seem to imagine
that the whole country West is of the same harsh
character; wherona nothing can be farther from
the reality.
" Such are the streams running through this
county that there are at least three good routes,
all of which are easy, yet each offering a distinct
advantage of its own. The only difficulty is in
choosing among ttum!
"Upon my asking your Engineer what were
the difficulties he met with ? None, in the
world,' he replied, ' except the time it will take
to examine the different routes so as to chootie
the best'
" Instead, therefore, of nature's offering op-.
posing obstacles by way of difficulty, she is to
profuse in her offers of routes as to make the
only difficulty that of selection. Thus has this
bugbear of impracticability melted away into
nothing I The Road ought, by all means, to be
completed by the Spring of 1868. And the ooun
try along the route ought (and I have no doubt
it will) contribute Liberally to making it. The
people are rich, and the resources to be developed
by the Road, will add greatly to their wealth."
A Goble Township•
Many townships in the State, says the Penp
ayiranirrn, have in past contests laid claim to
precedence in the Democratic ranks, on the score
of large comparative majorities for the part",
and conspicuous amongst these are the noble
townships of Coder= and Manheim, in York
county, which on several occasions have been
very nearly unanimous for the Democratic noM
inees. All, however, must unite, we think; in
according the first place to the gallant township
of Ben finger, in little Elk. Look at the folloi-

of:my native land-is filled with the cries of des

diplomacy of Europe has' changed Turkish hos
pitality to tee and my companions- into hopeless

ful children have begun the morning of their lifd
in the hands of my country's destroyer, and
I—but no: desponding does not become me,
for lam a man. I amnot permitted, or I would
say I envy the dead. Who is unfortunate I I
am in Broussa, where the great Hannibal once
lived an exile homeless like myself, but rich in
services performed for his country, while I can
claim only fidelity to mine. The ingratitude of
his nation went with him in hiebanishment, but
the sorrowful love of my countrymen follows me
omy place of exile. To thee, my God, I offer
thanks that thou didst deem me worthy to suffer
for dear Ilungary. Let me suffer afflictions, but
accept them as propitiatory nacrificea for my na
tive land.
And thou, - Huagaritux nation, yield not to des
pair; Be patient: hope, and wait thy timo !
Though all men forget thee, the God of Justice
will not. Thy sufferings are recorded, and thy
• tears remembered. The blood of thy martyrs
-thy noble sons--which aioistened thy soil, will
have its fruits. The victims which daily fall for
thee are, like the ever-green cypress over the
graves of the dead, the symbol of thy reearree
don. The races whom the destroyer excited
against the by lies and cunning will he unde
ceived: they will know that thou didat not fight
for pre-eminence, but for the common liberty—
that thou west their brother, and bled for
them also. The temporary victory of oar ene
mies will but serve to take the film from the eyes
of the deceived people. The sentiment of sym
pathy for our sufferings will inspire among the
smaller States and races the wish for a fraternal
confederation—for that which I always urged as
the only safe policy and guarantee of freedom
for them all.
The realization of this idea will hurl the pow
er of the haughty despots to the abyss of the past
and Hungary free surrounded by free nations,
will be great, glorious and independent.
At the moment when I hardly hoped for fur
ther consolation on earth, behold the God of Mer
cy freed my wife, and enabled her, through a
thousand dangers, to reach me in my place of
exile Like a hunted deer, she could not. far
five months find in her own native land a place
of rest. The executioners of the beardless
Nero placed a reward upon her bead, but she
has escaped the tyrants. She was to me mho
my exiled countrymen like the rainbow to Noah;
for she brought intelligence of hope in the un
shaken souls of the Hungarian people, and in
the affectionate sympathy of the neighboring
nations who had fought against us. They had
aided the wife of the much•slandered governor
of Hungary.
Although the sympathy of the world often
depends upon the result of actions, and the suc
cessful are applauded, still Hungary, by her
noble bearing and trials, has drawn the atten
tion of the world. The sympathy which she has
excited in both worlds, and the thundering curse
which the lips of millions have pronounced
against her destroyers, announce, like the roar
ing of the wind before the storm, the coming
retribution of.Beaven.

Among thenations of the world there are two
which demand our gratitude and affection.—
England, no,less powerful than sbe is free and
glorious, supported us by her sympathy, and by
the approving voice of her noblest eons and the
millions of her people. And that chosen land
of freedom beyond the ocean—the all-powerful
people of the United States, with their liberal

us courage by their deep interest in our cause
and sufferings, and by their condemnation of our
executioners.

Yon, noble Americans, we bless in tie name
of the God of Liberty! To you, who have sum;
moped the murderers of my countrymen before
the judgment•seat of the world—to you, who
are the first judges of this court—l will bring
the complaints of my nation, and before you I
will plead her cause. When the house of Haps
burg, With the aid of a foreign army, invaded my
country, and had destroyed, by their manifesto
of the 4th of March, 1849, the foundation upon
which the union with Austria rested, there re
mained for Hungary no alternative than the
Declaration of Independence, which the National
Assembly unanimously voted on the 14th of
April, 1849, and which the whole nation sol
emnly accepted, and sealed with their blood:
I declare to you, in the most solemn manner,
that all which has taken place, or that may hero.
after take place, proceeding either from indi
viduals or government, contrary to this clecla!
ration, which is in perfect accord with the
fundamental law of Hungary, is illegal and un
just.
Before you I assert that the accusation of
the Magyar race was unjust to the other races
—by means of which a portion of the Servings,
Wallachia/us, Slovenians, and Germans, dwell:
ing in Hungary, was excited against us—is an
Impious slander, circulated by the house of
Hapsburg, which shrinks (rein no crime to weak
en the united forces of our army; to conquer one
race after another, and thus bring them all nude,
the yoke of slavery.
It is true, some of the races in Hungary bad
reason to complain; but these subjects of com
plaint were the inevitable consequences of the
pre-existing state of things and the Austrian in •
terference. But the Croatians had no reason to
complain. This race of half a million, in a
separate province, bad a national assembly of
its own, and enjoyed greater privileges than even
the Hungarians. They contributed proportion.
ally but half as much in taxes; they possessed
equal rights with Hungary ; whilst the Hunga
rian Protestants, on account of their religion,
were not suffered to own lands in Croatia. Their
grievances and ours wore the same in the per
petual violation of the conatitutio,e by the im
perial government. But their own peculiar
grievances arose from the evils of former times,
and from the Austrian system of government,
which forcibly placed the Slovenian. Servian, and
watlachitur boundary districts on the German
military footing.
The moment, however, our people became
free and enjoyed their political rights, they be.
came just, and placed all things upon a basis of
freedom and perfect equality. But some of
these races, blinded by the infernal slanders and
suggestions of Austria, took up arms against
us. This people, who for centuries bad endured
slavery, fought against their own freedom !
God forgive them ! They knew not what they
In America, people of different languages
dwell ; but who says it is unjust for senators'
and representatives to use the English lan
guage in their debates, and to make it the official
language of the government?
This was what the Magyar race asked in Hun
gary. There was this difference only—that in
America it was not necessary to establish this
by law, for the original settlers hail stamped
their language in the country ; but in Hungary
a law was necessary to make the Magyar the
official language. The use of the Latin language
—a bad relic of the middle ages, which the cler
gy and aristocracy preserved as something pre
cious, imitating the ancient despots who caused
the laws to be written in small letters, and placed
On high towers, that the people might not un
derstand their rights—had been retained among
us. It was necessary to have a living, spoken
popular language. And what othercould we have
than the noble Magyar?
How often have I, and other leaders with me,
said to my countrymen that they must be strict
ly just, and Beek their future' greatness, not in
the predominance of one race, but in the perfect
equality of all ! My counsel was adopted and
made the basis of government. The same free
dom, the same privileges, without regard to lan
guage or religion, the free development of each
race under the protection of the law, were ac
corded to all. We not only guaranteed the right
to use any language in the churches and schools,
bat we afforded aid for the education and develop
ment of each nationality. The principle we an
nounced was, that either the State should pro
tect no religion, no nationality—leaving all to
the free action of the people—or that it should
protect all alike.
In the general administration the predominance
of our language, and consequently the race that
spoke it, was a necessity; but in the administration
of county affairs, which in some respects resem
bled that of the individual States in North
America, the use of each language was granted.
In the courts, in the trial by jury, in the right
of petition, in the republication of all laws, and
ordinances, the various races had the right to
use their own language. In one word, nothing
was left undone which could tend to place all on
a footing of the most perfect equality. True,
we did not—as Austria has done for political
puproses solely, to enslave all the people and
make the brave Hungarians a subordinate na
tion, make a territorial division of the lands.
We respected rights, and wished to progress,
but were .too honest to commence a system of
spoliation. And who has been benefitted by
this policy of the Vienna bureaucracy. Not
even those on whom the pretended favors have
been conferred.
When those races clamored fornational rights,
I boldly demanded what was wanting, and what.
could be granted without injury to the country.
No one answered, but reckless men, who spoke
of territorial division. The Servians desired to
have the comitat Baca and the three counties of
the Banat as a separate Servian State. The
Wallachians wished to have Transylvania. They
(the Servians) did not consider that they owned
no separate portion of the land of Hungary, and
that in Baos and the Banat were Wallachians,
Germans, and Magyars, who could not be made
subordinate to the less numerous Servians. So,
also, in Transylvania there were Magyars, Jek
lers, and Saxons, who would complain of such a
connexion with Wallachia.
As there were various races, speaking differ
ent languages in Hungary, and divided into as
many municipalities, who could blame us for
laying the. foimdation of government in a just
equality to all?_ Croatia alone was a separate
territory ; and how often have we said to her
that if she would remain in union with us, we
would give her the hand of brotherhood, but if
she wished to separate:, we would not hinder her !
We could not, however, permit such a division
of Hungary as would have destroyed her as a
nation. It was Austria who sowed the seeds of
division and dissolution.
Citizens of America! to you fdeolare honest
ly that my aim in the federation of Hungary
with the smaller nations was to secure the na
tionality and independence of each, and the free
dom of all; and had anything been wanting
;which Could have been - justly granted to any or
or all of the races in Hungary, the Magyars had
only to know it r and it would have been perform
ed with readiness; for fretnlem, and not power,
their desire. '

ARREST or Ma. TORABEigit AT MATAFA.—The
Empire City, with dates to October 19th, has
reached New Orleans. A despatch says :
We learn from Havana that T. S. Thrasher,
late editor of the Faro Industrial, was arrested
on the 16th, but on what charge is not known.
He was treated mildly, but his papers were
seised, and he was not allowed to communicate
with his friends. He was not committed to pris
on, but is at present confined at his residence, in
charge of the Commissary of Police.
Wilson J. Reeves, one of the Cuban prisoners,
was released on the 19th, and 08910 passenger in

A Nor iron Cus.tuvovetrrs.--Clairvoyance will
look up after this, if we are to believe the New
York Evening Post. So far back as February,
1851 , a clairvoyant, on being interrogated re
spoofing the Arctic expeditions, answered that
Captain Austin, who commanded one of the Eng
lish ones, was at that time, in longitude 96 deg.
45 min. west. This prediction was recorded in
Dr. Gregory's work on Animal Magnetism, pub
lished In Edinburg last spring, and reissued here
some time during the past summer. We re
member distinctly reading the fact in that work
months ago. Since that period, Capt. Austin,
as is well 'mown, has returned, and strange to
say, his log-book shows that, on the day speci
fied, he actually was in the place mentioned by
the clairvoyant.

A FALSE PnontsT•—The Boston Transcript
The queerest prediction we remember to have
seen about this country was that made by one
Colonel Grant, in the House of Commons, shortly
before the news of the battle of Bunker's Hilt
was received in Bighusd. The Colonel declared
that he had served in America, and he was fully
persuaded that "the Americans would not fight.
They made great pretensions to religion—sang
psalms—and talked politics—but they were ar
rant cowards, and would prove themselves such,
in the event of apy collision with the British
forces."
