Now that the contest_ forGovercor,...ke„in
this State is closed, all, defeated factions
seem to be prepared for pointing out the causes
which operated to produce their defeat. We
have, of convict; notiftg in , particula'r to trouble
no as - a
party; because we have no factions
among Ifs; and because we have elected our en
tire State ticket, with-the exception of one man.
His defeat is a matter wbich we greally regret;
because we regard him as an able man ; a most
exemplary citizen ; and a sterling and unoom
prising Democrat. His defeat, we know, has
been induced by the most foul and base lies by
the Federal party, in quarters where he is un
known ; and ry this oppositiototfew men who
have hitherto been active Democrats, but who
have on this occasion manifested even a willing
ness tcusee the whole Democratic ticket defeat
ed, rather than sacrifice their.own petty person
al animosity at the shrine of themajurity of their
fellow-citizens Some of the foremost of these
have heretofore been among the most prominent
seaters of good offices, when the Democratic par
ty had offices under their control; and are like
ly again' to' be active in trying to prove their
devotion to thecause, wheniiffices shall be again
at our dispoilal and therefore, we - wish their
namea.to be held in silent but atithitfOinttt,
braiteei:andthat their services in the late conteit
abilne regarded with all 'the importance, that
they merit. These gentlemen are to found
in different -counties of the State ; but ttiey are
more numerous, and have been more active in
Philadelphia, and some of the easterm catuitiea,
than elsewhere. We care not, ho'wever, where
they may be found,—they shouted be regarded
with suspiCion, ILS all, we thir;s, will be, who
are not steadfast in their tarpport of our party
principles and our pail?" organizations.
The late election has. • been one of great mo
en has proyen utter want of princi
ple on the part of ,tle Federal Whig party. It
has shown that they will submit to the dictates

place no relfiume whatever upon the statements 1

friends of the Union ; and that they are willing

their organization is based. It has shown that
the Elm. James Bootienzu is the choice of a .

A fine band of music was also stationed on the

try be augmented. We have now safe and ex
peditions routes secured, yin the Ohio canals and
railroads to the Lakes, and thence to Buffalo
,and Oswego, New York, and thence by canals
;through that State, which will answer all the
purposes of transportation during the navigable
portions of the year. But to make our commu
nication uninterrupted, we stand in need of a
perfect railroad communication to cover the in
terregnum the winter months create to the canal
and lake navigation. This contemplated road
secures by one route that desideratum, and the
Canada Road from Windsor, opposite Detroit, to
Niagara Falls, now in progress of construction,
gives us another. •
The Ohio river from Louisville to Pittsburgh
furnishes a link in the channel of communica
tion leading to the sea-board, at a season when
both lakes andcanals are shut out from us by ice
and at a period when the water in the Ohio is
generally in its best stages of navigation. With
the Pittsburgh and Rochester road completed,
we have a perfect railroad communication from
the head navigable waters of the Ohio, to Al
bany, New York, and Boston, daring the winter
months and early in the spring, before either the
Ohio, New York, or Pennsylvania canals are
open, or the navigation of the Northern lakes
can be resumed. This will appear manifest to
every intelligent business man at a glance, and
discloses at once the interest the commerce of
Louisville has, in the success and speedy com
pletion of this new link of communication be
tween us and the seaboard. We trust there
fore, that both the citizens of Pittsburgh and
gochester will persevere in their propoSition,
and that there efforts will be crowned with early
success.
This road could not otherwise than prove a
profitable and lucrative investment. It would
pass through - the rich and unsurpassed valleys
of the Genesee au Allegheny, opening rip a
most lucratife trade that now passes off in oth
er directions. It connects the valley of the Ohio
with Northern and Western New York by a much
shorter line than any now in use or likely to be
projected, and Alluring the winter and first spring
months would pass over it an Incalculable ton
nage of produce &c., going to the sea-boards, and
of merchandise coming this way. It also opens
up an entirely new mine of wealth in the great and
inexhaustible lumber region on the Allegheny,
and would work a revolution in this branch of
trade. And when the road from Lexington to
Maysville is completed, connecting with the
Louisville, Frankfort and Lexington roads now
in successful operation, the advantages of the
construction of the Rochester and Pittsburgh
road would be still greater to us, as it would in
crease the speed with which we could reach the
sea-board, as well as the commercial importance
of Louisville, by largely augmenting our exports
of cotton, tobacco, hemp, and barrel provisions.
So much for the interest we have in this newly
protected railroad bet Ween Pittsburgh and Ro
chester. Equally as important to Louisville
and the Southwestern commerce in the Great
Western Railroad now in progress of con
struction on the Canada side, between De
troit and Niagara Falls. This work is in the
hands of American enterpr.se and capital, and
no less than fifteen hundred men are employed
in pushing it forward. Its distance is two hun
dred and twenty-three miles, of which ninety
five per cent of the entire road is in straight lines
and above sixty-two per cent either level or the
grades under five feet per mile, and nearly seven
ty per cent either level or under ten feet per
mile.

Those having charge of this important work,
have pledged themselves in a communication
made to the public, that it shall be completed by
the Ist of December, 1852. When this is ac
complished, an entire and perfect railroad com
munication, from Michigan City and Lake Michi
gan, thence to Detroit, Buffalo, Albany, New
York and Boston, is opened to us at all seasons
of the year, and accessible at all times for the
export and import of produce, merohandize,
at rates of freight that will be established ;
making us entirely independent of the vexations,
delays and hazards of transportation incident to
the New Orleans and coasting route, especially
during the winter and spring months, always the
most to be dreaded by sea-faring men. But,
how are we to reach Michigan City ? The an
swer is readily given. By the New Albany,
Salem and Lafayette Railroad, running almost
in a direct line from opposite our city to Michi
gan City. This work is also under contract and
in rapid progress of completion, although inef
fectual attempts have lately been made by the
Michigan and Central Railroad Company to res
train, by injunction, the progress of this work
beyond Salem to Michigan city. As the days,
however, of exclusive monopolies are past, we
apprehend no inconvenience from the legal pro
ceedings instituted by the Central Railroad
against the New Albany road ; and the public
may, with the utmost confidence, look forward
to an early period, when Louisville will be in
immediate and direct communication by an un
interapted line of railroads with Buffalo, Albany,
New York and Boston. In both these rontea,
therefore, our city has much at stake, and its
best wishes are extended to those engaged in
pushing them forward to completion. There is
no rivalry . of collision of interest between the
two routes, running as they do between entirely
different and remote sections of country, and
each rendered necessary from the vast business
that would pay tribute to them in their respec
tive sections. Louisville has a common interest
in them both, because from her geographical
position she becomes the natural reservoir of the
vast carrying trade of each of these routes on
the Ohio river; while to her, both roads will look
for a large share of the staple products of the
South west that may be seeking a market on the
Atlantis 'Sea board. Our importance in their
estimation grows the greater, as we push on our
railroad communisation with Nashville to com
pletion, and will be struggled for with more
avidity as our packet lines with Memphis and
other cotton depots shall be established upon a
firm and permanent basis.

During a lecture on Popular Education, re
cently delivered at Albany, Governor Briggs re
lated-the follciwing impressive incident :
Twelve or fifteen years ago I left Washingtim
three or four weeks • during the spring.. While
at home I possessed myself of the letters of Mr.
Adam's Mother, and read them with exceeding
interest. I remember an expression in one of
the letters addressed to her son, while yet a boy
twelve years of age, in Europd. Says she: "I
would rather see you laid ui your grave than
1 that you should grow up a profane and graceless
boy."
After returning to Washington,l went over to
Mr. Adams' seat one day, and said to him:
" Mr. Adams, I have found out who made
you."
What do you mean r said: he.
I replied, " I have been reading the letters of
your mother!" If Ihadspokenthat dear name to
some little 'boy who had been for weeks away
from his dear mother, his eyii could not have
flashed more brightly or his face glowed more
quickly than did the eye of this venerable old
man, when I pronounced the name of his mother. -
