McCabe, the President, in the Chair. A number of bills were presented and allowed. On motion, it was Resolved, That inasmuch as the judges on horses and sheep, at the late fair, have divided the former into blood, draught, and saddle stal lions, and the latter into Durhams, Leicesters, Merinos, and South Downs, to the most merito rious of which several classes premiums have been awarded, though they had not been so classed in the hand-bills, diplomas be awarded to each, according to their decision. The following report was read from the ma jority of the committee appointed to examine the several farms offered for competition as being the "best cultivated farms" : We, the undersigned, Committee on Farms, beg leave to report, that there were four farms returned, competing for premiums, viz: Those of J. L. Snyder, Upper St. Clair township; C. Snively, Penn; J. F. Garrard, Indiana ; and P. A. Way, Ohio. Your committee examined those farms, and it is the opinion of the undersigned that the farm of Mr. Snyder is worthy of the premium. We would also, at the same time, bear testimony to the many valuable improve ments and good order of some of the other farms, and would recommend that farms be classed in two classes, bottom farms and upland farms, as they would then compete to a better advantage. All which we would respectfully submit. JOSEPH MILLER, SAML. M'CABLIN. Mr. Martin offered the following, as the mi nority report: To the Board ,of Managers of the Allegheny Co. Agricultural Society: Gentlemen: Having been appointed (by you) Chairman of a Committee to award a premium for the best cultivated farm, and four farms be ing entered, viz : those of J. L. Snyder, Upper St. Clair; H. Snively, Penn; J. Garrard, Indi ana; P. A. Way, Ohio, we proceeded oteour examination on Friday, Saturday and Monday the 10th, 11th and lath instants. And as my colleagues and I could not agree, I therefore present for your consideration a minority report. Before I proceed, I will state that I highly esteem all the four gentlemen competing, and hope that the friendly feelings I entertain to wards them will be reciprocal, notwithstanding the remarks I proceed to make. In the first place, the Society should have given due notice to all competing, that they would be required to give a detailed description of their rotation of cropping, the manures they use and the manner of applying them, how much per acre for the different grains, roots, &c., their manner of cul tivation, the produce per acre, and at what cost, the nature of their soil and sub-soil, their method of draining, their method of reclaiming waste lands, and of renovating wornont lands— how they make and preserve manure, do they preserve their liquid manures, how and to what do they apply them—do they use any lime, plaster, guano, &c., how they use them, and how much per acre These and many other such particulars the scientific farmer should be able to lay before an examining committee. Another consideration is, that when a society gives a premium for the best cultivated farm, it would require to be such a farm as the Society could recommend as a model for our young farmers, and all others that are in the pursuit of agricultural knowledge, to look to, and imitate. Now, gentlemen, having minutely examined all the four farms competing, and not wishing to hurt the feelings of any one, by pointing out errors, I must honestly say, that I see nothing meritorious in their cultivation, beyond what is in general practice in the surrounding neighbor hood; therefore, I would respectfully suggest to the Board, not to award any premium on farms for this season. Yours, respectfully, WM. MARTIN. On motion, it was Resolved, That both reports be printed; the premium to be awarded accord ing to the report of the majority. Oa motion, it was Resolved, That Messrs. Niur doch, Speer, and Parkin, be appointed a com mittee to superintend the filling up of the di plomas, and that they be delivered to those en titled to them, on and after Thursday, October the 23d, at the Agricultural lwplement deposi tory of Messrs. Hall & Speer, Penn street. On motion, it was Resolved, That those per sons entitled to receive any premiums in money, according to the printed programme of the late fair, shall call at the office of the Register of Wills, on and after Thursday of the present week, where they will be paid. Notice was directed to be given that all plough men, wishing to compete at the approaching ploughing match, should enter their names with any of the Board of Managers on or before Sat urday, (November Bth,) preceding the plough ing match, which will take place on Tuesday, November 11th. The ploughs to be on the ground, so as to be ready to start at 10 o'clock, precisely, and the ploughmen to be directed to plough from six to eight inches deep, and the nearer they bring the angles of their farrows to the square, the better, but they are by no means to go within the square. After the transaction of some business of no general importance, the Board adjourned to meet on Saturday, Nov. the Bth, in the same place. J. E. MOCABE, Chairman. J. K. KENNEDY, Secretary. Costa„—A question arose yesterday in the U. S. District Court relative to the payment of costs. At;the last term of the Court, a number of-wit nesses had been summoned In a case in which Wm King was defendant. Ho being misfile to pay the costs of witnesses, an order was made by the Court that they be paid by the United States. The case was postponed, and the wit nesses recognized to appear at this term. In the meantime the prosecuting attorney gave no tice to Col. Black, defendants council, that a nolle prosequi would be entered in the case, and that the attendance of the witnesses would not be required. No notice was given to the wit nesses, and they appeared at this term, when the prosecuting attorney objected to the U. S. paying their costs. CoL Black said that the witnesses had entered into recognizamies to the Court to make their appearance at this term, and if it did not want them, it was its place to notify them, and not his. One of the witnesses was from Lake Superior. The court said they had made the order for the payment of the costs, and they saw no reason to change it. They were allowed. GO dirg • 1111.: subscribers having rented the tan-yard so many years occupied by Mr. John Caldwell, are prepared to tan leather of all kinds, by this superior process. They haoe felt some hesitation in calling the attention of the public to their leather, knowing that so many worthless patents had at various periods been brought to notice, that it would be almost impossible to induce persons to buy, unless a string of certificates, equal In number to those of a new patent medicine, were appended to an advertisement. Relying entirely on the good qualities of the leather to attract the attention of manufacturers and leather dealers, they have felt unwilling to resort to such means of procuring custom; but, as it has been asserted that the discovery was.useless, and the leather worthless, they take this means of inviting the public to an examination of its merits.
