We have endeavored to make a compilation of the returns of this county, so far as they h%ve 'been received; bat have given the matter up in despair. lint few returns have been received, and. iv,ch these ere by no means complefe and . -.satisfactory. No arrangements had been made to bring the result in by express, as formerly, and we are , therefore compelled, to wait until the return judges meet 011 Friday, Were we `are' enabled to present to our readers the official vote of the county. We 'may say here, however, that we believe the 'Whigs have carried their entire county tick et by small majorities. .ladeed, under all the circumstances, the Democracy have great cause • to congratulate themselvia upon the result. If there had not been a great deal of swapping of votes for Governor, Johnston's majority in the county would certainly fall short of 2000. “Scott. Johnston, Strohm, and the Tariff These were the watchwords of the Federal party in this ;aunty, before the election.— Every street corner, bar room, mill door and blacksmith's shop in the county was plastered over with huge handbills, on which the above names were printed in glaring capitals. Our op ponents presented the issue, and the Democrats met them in a fair fight. -Theresultisionswn to the public. The Whig papers for some days before the election, boasted and bragged and lied with more than their agenstouted recklessness. The old Gazette,—the =conscionable Gazette, —m ade strenuous exertions to gull its deluded readers in to the belief that the fanatic Johnston would be elected governor of Pennsylvania. On the morn ing of the election, the Deacon delivered him self of the following extravagant article : Gtosious PROSPECTS.—Cheer up, Whigs, we have good news from nearly every part of the State. If the half that we have heard, by let ters and otherwise, from various parts of the State, should prove correct, Gov. Johnston will be most triumphantly re-elected. Many eyes are turned upon Allegheny county. She will not falter in her good works, and we hope to have the pleasure of sending over the mountains by the telegraph, a majority of over 3000 for Johnston and Strohm. Its loving neighbor, the Journal, the day pre vious, broke forth in an equally extravagant and ridiculous style: And the signs that our own faithful Allegheny is fully awakened to the importance of this elec tion, and will turn out a full vote. We could give 4000 majority for Johnston; we ahall 3200, possibly 3500. All we ask to secure Johnston's election is a fall vote from Allegheny county. The prospect is that she will astonish both. Democrats and the moderate Whig calcula 'tors. Turn out then every Whig, that out, to share the glory of the victory that is before us. This same system of brag was pursued all over the State, for the purpose of galvanising a little spirit into the poor whigs ; but it was all of no avail. (3en. Scott, with all his military fame and bright laurels won on the battle field, could not keep Johnston from ginking. Honest, truth-loving, patriotic Whigs rejoice at the result Whigs who are in favor of the Union, and despise treason and traitors, rejoice at the result. Whigs who are opposed to humbugging the people with the tariff hobby at every election, rejoice at the re sult. Pennsylvania has doubly redeemed herself. Cobden is remarkably popular. 'Bawd, 'it seems as if there were no bounds or possibility of exhaustion to his popularity. The first men tion of his name in the Congress was the signal for a spontaneous, irresistible outburst of ap plause; when he arose to make hisgreat speech, he was met with a perfect hurricane of cheers, that seemed as if they would never stop; nor did he once open.his mouth, but the people, ever proud and never weary of their favorite, greeted him with fresh and hearty demonstrations of regard. I cannot recoollect that I ever saw the like of it. He is truly the idol of the peoPle, who still appear quite intelligent and. discrimi nating in their idolatry. There is probably not a man in all England that has any thing like the amount of Cobden's popularity and influ ence with the great mass ,of her population; and if I do not ,entirely misread the man and the times, he is destined still, to act a most im portant part in a variety of reforms yet to be effected in the British Government. And who , is this Richard Cobden? A plain, earnest, downright Englishman, such as John Hampden, or possibly Oliver Cromwell—names so grosslymisconceived, and so wickedly malign ed for two centuries—might have been, had they lived in these times • a successful cotton manu facturer from the no rth of England, with no ad vantages of any English or Scotch University, but self-made and self-educated ; a man tieing by the force of his own genius and enterprise, from the bosom of the people ; a man trained in their views, in sympathy with their feelings, and ever ready through sunshine and storm, to make their cause his own. He first emerged into pub lic notice as a shrewd, adroit, effective leader in the anti-corn law agitation ; audit was the signal triumph of that movement that put him at the head of popular reforms in Parliament and made him, from that day to this, the people's chum-. pion and favorite. But where lies the secret of Cobden'e power? Just look at him.7tind judge for yourself. There he sits undistinguished on the platform, simple as'a child ; with a quiet but earnest look ; an eye deeply blue, mild yet bright, and somewhat quick and searching in its glances; a fair, clear, slightly florid complexion; a full and finely de veloped-forehead; a sweet and almost child-like play of kindness and gentleness about his month; a general expression of countenance so youthful, and auburn loam so entirely free from gray hairs, that, though probably forty-five years old, or more, you might mistake him for a man of only thirty-five. Ohserve him as he rises to speak, and you see a form rather slim, yet erect and compact, about five feet nine inches high,. elastic and graceful in its movements. He is *, no orator, as Brutus is," and yet he never fails to secure your respect and gratified attention. Yon may not discover what or where the charm is, but all the while you feel the magic spell and rejoice in the sweet captivity. His gestures, though not elegant, are always forcible; and his voice, though pitched on a key almost feminine, and lacking the deep, heavy bass tones which command and captivate the mass of hearers, is nevertheless so clear, so distinct, and so winning in its modulations, as to retain a kind of charm upon his audience to the end of whatever he wishes to say. He is always in earnest, always full of his subject, and intent, applause or no ap plause, on holding his hearers to it until he wins them to his views. He is not very fluent, and often appears hesitating, perhaps from the par liamentary vogue which has of late years made this habit popular; but he still moves on with out an actual tripping, in the strong, straight forward course, in his argument, with an admirable simplicity of arrangement, cogency of logic, and appropriateness of Illustration. Cobden has some peculiar qualifications for a leader of reform. Cool and cautious, shrewd and concilitory, he gains much with little show, and often anticipates victory by his adroit ar rangements for the conflict. He does not pro voke, but conciliates at every point. He in dulges in no menace, or defiance, or denuncia tion ; he starts no unnecessary prejudice ; he creates no superfluous friction ; be makes no un essential issues but by a frank, precise statement of his object, narrows the contest down to the smallest compass possible, half wins his oppon ents over to his own side by the candor of his concessions or explanations, and thus renders well nigh useless moat of the formithfble bat teries carefully prepared to overwhelm or anni hilate him. His management offlie peace ques tion in the House of Commons.iti a full confirma tion of these statements. The W,eitern Man We find an article descriptive of this genus American, christened The Western Man, so aptly done by th,e'Keokuk Dispatch, and so exactly ex pressive-of our own ideas of the personage in question, that we must perforce adopt the child ,sit our own, clothe him, and "set him up" : In Western society are to be found men of all climes and latitudes. The honest and frugal New Englander, the hearty and prime New York er, the reckless Texan, and even the saffron colored Californian—all these make up western society, and infuse a variety into our go-ahead western character. And, as old wine is not put into new bottles, so are western manners always cheerful, buoyant and exhilerant. - Brother Jon athan of the West is a person of great vanity, but of little mock dignity. He is aspiring, tho rough, active and practical. He has not yet come, to doze, like the Englightnn, over beer and the corn-laws after dinner, nor like the Ger man, over musty Lexicons and a meerschaum, nor to kick up his heels with the volatile French man, when his soul feels merry. Yet we defy the world to show a cleverer fellow, or one more peculiarly his own man. He is in this a true type of the nation. He steps longer and higher, and thinks faster than the people of other countries. His spirit is free, like the wild wind which sweeps over his own magnificent woods and prairies, and his thoughts are grand, as of one who looks on glorious land scapes, careering rivers, waving forests, limpid lakes and gorgeous sunsets. Yet, in all this, his discrimination of human nature, and in - the practical affairs of life, is greater than that of eastern men. He can excel all others in the aptness and cordialness of his address and manners, and where are they who can beat him at a bargain? We are proud to believe thatinnder the rough coats of western men is enfoldedore manliness, and that as a society they are more characterized by intelli gence, than the men of other countries. Like the rough diamond, their brilliancy is real and solid, though it maybe hid by a rude covering, while the embellishments which shine in more polished circles, often gild the merest baubles. General Houston and the Greer Correa.. pondence The editor of the Washington Union has re ceived a letter from a gentleman " high in the confidence of Gen. Houston," in which the writer says: • " You were right in denouncing as a whig bub ble the late publication in the New York Herald, purporting to be a correspondence between C H. Donaldson and various democrats in the Union. Having a large acquaintance in Texas, I am satisfied there is no such persons living in that state.' I have also inquired of others who would Ile likelyto know, but they have never heard of him. The truth is, he is a fictitious gentleman, Manufactured in the great political laboratory of New York, under the direction of the New York Herald, for the purpose of giving that paper importance and circulation. The last letter in the published series, purporting to be from Donaldson to Greer, is a pure fabrica tion, and, has the ear-marks of the writers of the Herald. The effort to identify Gen. Houston with the free-soilers, or any other clique, is worthy of the source from which it emanated. " There is no man in the Union sounder on the subject of slavery than Gen.. Houston. He laid down hie platform fully in his Gadsden let ter. It would be a most foolish thing in him to sacrifice his consistency, his well-earned laurels —the fruits of a long life of good service—in a combination so fruitless and contemptible as that put forth by Bennet." • ELOPKMSST ix Hioa Luri.—The fashionable circles of the village of Mayslick were thrown into quite a fever of excitement on Tuesday, by the elopement of a young lady, beautiful and ac complished, the daughter of one of the wealthy burghers, with a dashing young gentleman from tie adjoining county of Fleming. They sought 'Squire Shelton's court, and were there made one for life. Success to the right I Labor om nia tincit.—Mayavale Post Boy, 9th. , Retainlocomen of an Awful Event. In 1800 occurred the awful catastrophe of the Rossberg, in Switzerland, when the mountain .slipped, and hundreds of human beings, house.% ohatelets, _ herds of-. cattle; farms . and dairies, were buried in five minutes. The traces of this dread event, as seen from the Lake of Lucerne, are so fresh, that it is difficult to believe that it did not take place yesterday ; the utter desola tion being still more strongly marked by the con trast with the smiling scenes around. One of the prints that interested met was that represent. ing the incident of the sleeping infant in the cradle, floating down the lake, the balance of the little ark being kept by the house Cat, which re• mained at the child's feet. The placid counte nance of the unconscious slumberer amid the Surrounding wreck, and the uneasy looks of the poor cat whcagazed ruefully at the waves, would make a good subjeot for a picture. There are a thousand well known stories and anecdotes connected with the calamitous phe• nomenon ; some very touching, and others relti Ling to escapes quite miraculous. Husbands' were separated from their wives, parents from their children. One of the most affecting is that of a bridal party which had just left the little church at Geldan, after assisting at the union of two lovers. The joyous procession advanced down the street preceded, by a band of rustic musicians. In the centre, surrounded by their friends, walked the youthul bridegroom and his blushing bride, the prettiest girl in the village. They had been attached 'in childhood, and every one sympathized in their happiness. The young man carried in his hand the 4. boquet de marriage." About half way down the street lived an old dame, the village school mistress, who had in structed the pretty Ratehen in her childhood, but was too infirm to join in the wedding train. When they reached the door, the young brido disengaged her arm from that of hercompanion, and whispered to hlm that she would be back in a moment, ran into the house to embrace her old preceptress. During that moment the catas trophe took place The ground suddenly gave way beneath the bridal party, clouds of dust darkened the air, a torrent of mud mingled with stones and rubbish, came flowing down from the mountain ; and all was rain and desolation.— The bridegroom escaped without any more se rious damage than that of being thrown down and stunned.. He soon recovered his senses, and freeing him self from the rubbish in which he was half bu ried, staggered to his feet, his bridal boquot still grasped in his hand, and looked about for the house into which his beloved had entered. lt was gone ! Every trace of the village had dis appeared ; not a vestige of the old familiar scenes of his childhood met the eyes of the unfortunate young man ; he ran wildly about from one heap of ruins to another, calling loudly for his bride, but there was no answer. He interrogated the few individuals whom he met flying they knew not where, or else in search of their friends, he demanded of them with frantic gestures, wheth• er they had seen his Mitchell ; but no one knew anything about her. For three long years the unhappy young man continued his distracted search ; no effort could induce him to desist, or win him away from the fatal spot. Night and day, still carrying the faded remains of the marriage boquet, his spec tral form might be seen wandering among the ruins, and his voice heard calling on his lost one, now in accents of hopeless despair, and then with wild and feverish anxiety as a gleam of hope that she would answer his cries crossed his disordered brain. At length his restless foot steps were heard no longer. Search was made for the unfortunate bridegroom, and be was found lying dead beside a heap of rubbish, the worn fingers of his right hand clasped tightly round a bunch of withered stocks and discolored ribbons. His weary search was over ;he had found his bride at Inst. Premium Wines Franklin county among other products of the soil, has taken her stand among the wine-grow ing comities of the State. We have been presented with several bottles of the native wine by both John ,Yacobs and Come- Hue Jacobs, from their vineyards in this county. They are hot wines from the Catawba grape and pronounced by the best, 'judges, superior to the imported of this class of wines. They are German's, fully understand their bu siness, and speak'well of their success, and be- Here most of Cur soil well adapted to the gripe as well as our climate. We have no doubt that the grape'culture will be greatly increased in thin region.— Ohio Statesman. The cultivation of the grape and the manufac ture of wino is destined to increase in this coun try until it will become a common beverage in almost every family as it is in France, Switzer land, and*Germany on the Rhine. When the light domestic wines take the place of distilled spirits, then we shall see an end to intemperance in this country. The people of all wine-growing countries are temperate and sober, as they are in France, Germany, &e., but wherever ardent spirits are manufactured and used, as in Eng land, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, and the United States, intemperance and all its baleful con.ser quences prevail. The wines manufactured from the domestic grape have but little alcohol in them, and persons who acquire a taste for them lose all appetite for distilled spirits or malt liquors. These sentiments may be considered as at war with the modern notions on the subject of tem perance. Yet we are nevertheless fully convinc ed of their truth. Whenever wine, pure wine we mean, can be made to take the place of bran dy; rum and whisky in this country, the temper ance revolution will be complete, and drunken• ness will cease. In France and Italy wine is used as a beverage at the table, as we use tea and coffee, with less injurious effects, yet the people are sober and temperate. In this county we are intemperate in the use of tea and coffee as well as ardent spirits, and the injurious ef fects of the former articles, although not so per ceptible, are equally as fatal, in destroying health and shortening life.—lndiana State Sen tinel. PANIC-MAKBRS.—The editor of the "Journal of Commerce," New York, says : "Taking the whole period from 1848 inclusive, to the present time, our exports exceed our im ports more than $80,000,000. So that accord ing to their theory of the balance of trade, all is right on this head, notwithstanding the Tariff of 1846. Another fact which appears from the above statistics, is, that the quantity of gold and sil ver in the country, so far from having diminish ed within the last 25 months, has greatly in creased. There never was so much specie and bullion in the country before. Without count ing any of that brought by emigrants, and after deducting all that has been exported, we still have a balance of some $30,000,000 more than we had 25 months Ago. Lot the panic-makers meditate on this fact, and then croak about all the specie going out of the country." CLIPPER Sun' FLYING CLoun.—The " fast sail ing" clipper ship Flying Cloud, built at East Boston, and owned by Grinnell, Mintnni & Co., of Boston has made an astonishing passage to San Francisco. She left New York at 6P. M., June 2d, and arrived at San Francisco on the 20th of August, thus making the passage in the unprecedented short period of 79 days, the short est by 17 days ever before made. She made Cape Horn in 60 days, and the line on the Pa cific side in 71 days. Her best run in 24 hours was 374 miles—the greatest run ever made by any sea-going vessel—averaging 15 miles per hour. While making this run she was carrying top-gallant sails with the wind off the point for ward of the beam. She ran in the consecutive days 992 miles, and on one occasion 17 knots time were insufficient to measure her wonderful speed. Her poorest days work was 40 miles.— When ten days out she sprung her mainmast head rendering the mast very tender the rest of the voyage. _ Sam Sliok says, writing from Eng and : " Arter all, they haint got no Indgin corn here, they can't raise it, nor punkin-pies, nor quinces, nor pea-nuts, nor silk-worms, nor noth in'. Then as to their farmin'—Lord only look at five great elephant-lookin' beast in one plough with one great ltimmokin' fellow to hold the han dle, and another to carry the whip, and a boy to lead, whose boots have more ironon 'em than the horses huffs have, all crawlin', as if they was a go& to a funeral. What sort of a way is that to do work? It makes me mad to look at 'em. If there is any airthly clumsy way fashion of doin' a thing, that's the way they are always sure to git here.
