IaGLER, ELECTED GOVEMNORII From the returns received 'by Telegraph, up to 1 o'clock this morning, we have no hesitation in saying that the Democracy have r aimed a great and glorious victory over Federalism, Whigism; Abolitionism and Freesoilisra. Broarß, the Demoaratic aandidate for Governor, has undoubtedly been elected by a large major ity. We believe his majority over - WM. F. JOHNSTON will be at least TEN" THOUSAND ! Let every Freeman rejoice. • Pennsylvania has been redeemed, and fanaticism haa been ef lectnally rebuked. Our gallant old Rooster, who has been cooped up for many a day, once more spreads his wings, and proclaims the glad tidings to our Democrat io friends. The Elections of Yesterday The news received last night, up to 1 o'clock, indicates a large gain for the Democratic party, over the election of 1848. The Whig majority in this county will not exceed 2500, and may not exceed 2200; and, from the returns from other counties, we find a gain, thus far t .of be tween three and four thousand. The election of Messrs. lissnuan and Ca!LET is conceded by many of the Whigs; but we can not speak positively on thispoint We give be low all the returns we have received, exceptink a few for the Judges. It is doubly distressing to the.writer of this article that a severe iniliipeidtG prevented Mtn Trim being an eyewitnestijd this triumph_ of the good cause. The man who has been able to change. iii degree in erence i nto su c h a of.enthusittain, must not only be a great orator, but 'the cause . in *hose , behalf be appears ; must also rank among the noblest and brightest. And such it is! The cause of freetnin - in 'Gentian -- landa, to whihh we, living as we do, far from the arm of Pitsiotism, passing our days in the hill sunshine , [of freedom, are also called upon to ontribute , - . 1 our 'mite. May this fire of enthusiasm which . Kinkel has lighted among us, burn on in strength; • 1 and further, may no unfavorable results of 'the German Revolutionary party intervene, to plunge us into the cold bath' . of disappointment. We express this wish, because we know from expe Hence that the Germand in America rush too [ easily from: one extreme into the other. When in 040 the news of the Baden insurrection reached New Orleans, we there suggested the idea of establishing a:"Ten Cent Club," I. e,. it was resolved, that whoever wished to interest hin iself for the emancipation of Fatherland, should, whether rich or poor, pay in ten cents every month to a Finance Committee, author ized to make the collection, and that these monthly contributions should be continued until Germany should be altogether free. ' We said, then, in the presence of our country men assembled in great masses, that our broth ers in the Fatherland couldnot be sided by mere empty demonstratiorus; 'that they looked to America for that element of success which was very scarce in Germany, but comparatively abundant here, viz :—Money. We bad the sat isfaction of seeing our proposition adopted with enthusiasm, and, within the very first two days; several hundred dollars were collected in single ten cent pieces. Every German man, every Getman woman, yes, even the poorest g irl at ser vice came forward with the dune theirrequired offering. A " Ten cent Mob "of this kind, ex tended throughout the 'Union, would. have brought in a monthly revenue of at least 100,- 000 dollars. But before they had time to imi tate the example of New Orleans in other cities, brought news of the total explosion and disper sion of the Revolutionary party in Baden, and forthwith the intoxication of enthusiasm disap peared. No one would give another cent to what they called a lost and roinedeause. The money which had been collected was, sent to Switzer land, and so the affair ended. What a crying sin the Germans of America committed in desisting from carrying out the plans proposed in N. Orleans, is now as clear as the sun. •Suppose that , the Club which was es tablished in N. Orleans in . June, 1849, had found imitators, and that by August' of the same year similar Clubs had been formed throughout the wholethlion'and , that every tenth German had contributed his ten cents monthly, out of % Ger man population of at least five million souls, there would have been a monthly income of 60,- - 'OOO dollars. Since that August, have elapsed 25 months, the accumulated would by this time have reached $1,500,000. This would have been a nice little sum to cheer the heart of a Kinkel withal,—who, by next Spring, could have em ployed it with success in the cause of the Revo lution. We have, at present, another favorable oppor ttmity of making ourselvesul to the German nation by small subscriptions, the amount of which we would scarcely miss. Kinkel has awakened the• right spirit in the German, popula don of Baltimore; he %V pursue his mission, and wherever he may address the Germans, the same enthusiastic feeling will follow him. Well then! let us feed the fire of enthviasm, that - it may not, as in so many former instances, die vnt— Let us continuo to lay our mite every .week or every month upon the altar of our. Fatherland , And' even should many of our brethren's strug gles for freedom prove failures, what difference does it make? Let the contributors, in the 11. States, only not grow tired, - let each one per severe in transmitting his modest• offering, and 'we will at last be able to facer;:the Rothschilds, the Barings and the Hopes. These single drops - will, at length, undermine the brittle structure of monarchy until it shall finally come crashing down. The main object:inn which the opponents of Kinkels plan,, bring forward with a certain show of reason, consists in the assertion that the Germans cannot win their freedom through pe cuniary aid, that the German nation must rise by the exertion of its crwn atnni&i. Who has said :one word against this declaration? Is there a single German in Anierica who imagines that ,Germanyis to be freed by our pecamiary assist • , ance alone ? The great German people must and will rise—they must barter blood and life "for freedom in the old Fatherland; they must sacrifice to this goddess amid the tempest of bat tle; amid the rain of musket balls; but shall we, therefore, stand by quietly,—unmoved or applauding spectators,--ehall not we also put forth our-bands to the great work of delivering our Fatherland ? It is only by bestowing upon i, 'our brethren beyond the seas what they are most in need, of that we can prove ourselves worthy of the freedom which we here enjoy. And the . thing most required is—" moskir." It is the nerves rerum" of every war. This was ton" ago well understood by Frederick the Great thoroughly comprehended the whole trade shit machinery of war from first to last, for her s& in his writings : "To carry CM a war threat?) 4igt• are necessary : first—money ; second—nnine3, and third—money." Without these three : sites, no _nation can permanently free itialt ; therefore, since we, as has been explaindiPilaW can create large funds of money by mnilll4lo- scriptions, let us go, energetically, to worki:but above all things, let us not grow cold again, but persevere heartily in our contributions until a bonfire of joy shall have been reared upon the Mountain tops of our German Repuplic from the blazing fragments of the German thrones. Walton, on her passage from Chagres to Belize, was wrecked on the 26th ultr a on the main reef, near Kay Cooker. It appears that this vessel left Chagres on or about the 7th nit., for Belize, having been char tered by Messrs James Hyde & Co., to take in s cargo of mahogany. Shortly after she sailed, a fever broke out on board, attacking the master and whole crew, and so disabling them that they had not sufficient strength to work her, and thew ehe was in a manner left to chance and the mer cy of the seas. On making land (Manger Kay) she hoisted her ensign anion down, as a signal of distress and for assistance. Not being able to get any, she continued on her course until she sighted Kay Cooker reef, where from want of strength even to get the anchors over the sides, she drifted bodily on, and became a complete wreck. The Watchman says : We must say we cannot conceive how this dis aster occurred for seeing the reef before them the master and Mew must have been exhausted indeed not to have prevented her driving thereon. We shall, however make no further comment, but add that the keeper of the light-house at Manger Kay made an effort to get on board the vessel when she was passing, and went some miles beyond soundings after her, but seeing her holding on her course, and the impossibility of his catching her, he returned to the Kay. Napoleon's Views of Christ We recently noticed an account given by one of the pastors in this city, in a public discourse, of a conversation which passed between the Em peror Napoleon, after his banishment to St. Helena, and his faithful friend, Count de Mon tholon. The conversation was published not long since in a foreign journal. It is so well authenticat ed, and so 'interesting in itself, that we here pre sent that portion of it which relates to Christ, to our readers. " I know men," said Napoleon, and I tell you that Jesus is not a man ! The religion of Christ is a mystery which subsists by its force, and proceeds from a mind which is not a human mind. We find in it marked individu ality, which originated a train of words and ac tions unknown before. Jesus borrowed nothing from our knowledge. He exhibited in himself a perfect example of his prospects. Jesus is not a philosopher, for his proofs are miracles, and from the first his disciples adored him. In fact, learning and philosophy are of no use for salvation; and Jesus came into the world to re veal the mysteries of heaven, and the laws of the Spirit. " Alexander, Ctesar, Charlemagne, and my self, founded empires; but on what foundation did we rest the creation of our genius ? Upon force. Jesus Christ alone formed his empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for him. "It was not a day, or battle, that achieved the triumphs of the Christian religion in the world. No, it was a long war, a contest for three een turies, begun by the apostles, then continued by the flood of Christian generations. In this war, all the kings and potentates of the earth were on one side ; on the other I see no army, but a mysterious force, some men scattered here and there in nil parts of the world, and who have no other rallying point than a common faith in the mystery of the cross. " I die before my time, and my body will be given back to the earth, to become food for the worms. Such is the fate of him who has been called the great Napoleon. What an abyss be tween my deep mystery, and the eternal king dom of Christ, whis is proclaimed, loved and adored, and which is extending over the whole earth. Call you this dying? Is it not living, rather? The death of Christ is the death of God." Napoleon stopped at the last words, but Gen. Bertrand making no reply, the emperor added —"lt you do not perceive that Jesus Christ is God, then I did wrong to appoint you General," —N. E. Evangelist.
