Mail Robbery.—Joseph Stanley, Clerk in the
Past Office at Duncanville, Huntingdon county;

The Leading Staple
The statement made by Senator Douglass, of Illinois,
in the recent speech at the Agricultural Fair, in New
York, "that cotton was the leading staple of the United
States," has excited considerable attention. The hallow
hug facia, as to the quantity and value, taken from the
census statistics of 1810, with'regard to the comparative
results of Agriculture, will be read with interest—

From this it appears that the weight of the cotton crop
is I,as than a twenty-661 part of the corn crop, and
about one-half the value. It is, therefore, pretty evident
that cotton is not the 'leading staple" in either of these
respects. On comparing the valise of the cotton crop of
Mississippi, the largest producer of that article, with the
hay crop of the State of New Vork, we find that hay
counts the higher of the two—

A vessel had arrived at Southampton, from

A great reform meeting was held at Manches
ter for the purpose of giving impetus - to the
measures for introducing the new reformed bill
the coming session of Parliament.
In Paris the conductors of Presse and Evene
meat have been condemned to six months im
prisonment, and fined 100,000 francs.
An article has appeared in the Paris Coma
tutionelle, which has caused much excitement
and attention. It says unless Louis Napoleon
be kept in power, confusion and ruin will be the
result.

The greatest rejoicing was occasioned at Mad
rid, by the reception of the mews from'Cuba of
the capture of Lopez, but they were still re
solved to send out reinforcements, designed for
the Island. Despatches have been transmitted
to Washington, protesting in the strongest
terms against the supineness of the U. S. Gov
ernment, and demanding satisfaction for the
outrage on the Spanish Consul at New Orleans.
The Marquis of Liarilores has addressed a
letter to the Spanish ministry at the friendly
courts, in which he states, that although Spain
does not desire war with the United States, she
will not hesitate to declare war if forced to do
so.
The inauguration of the great Rail ,Road be
tween St. Petersburgh- and Moscow took place
on the let of September. The line will be open
for travel on the 15th of November.
There are rumors of trouble about Schleswig
Holstein affairs. A Democratic conspiracy has
been discovered, and among the arrests made is
the editor of the Minerva. The object of the
conspiracy was to throw off French influence,
and substitute the protection of England. Four
or five hundred government employees have
been dismissed in consequence.
The Irish papers complain that, in conse
quence of the unexampled immigration, there
was a scarcity of able bodied laborers.
Two flax spinning firms failed at Dundee.
Their liabilities amounted to £90,000. Messrs.
Eggers & Taylor, of Liverpool, had suspended.
The amount of bullion in the Bank of Eng
land, on the 20th, was 114,675,000.
The submarine telegraph wires between Eng
land and France have been extended to within
three miles of the French coast.
The new Sheriff of London was sworn in on
the day of the Asia's departure.
The chief fact from France is the prevalence
of profound tranquility, of which the President
had taken advantage to remove to St. Cloud-

In Brussels the artists have given a superb
ball to King Leopold, in a hall erected for the
occasion, decorated with the finest gems of art
which Belgium can boast.
The Austrian Emperor is making a tour into

BALTLKOPLE, October 9
We learn from Washington, that the President
has given orders to the Naval Stations, to fire
salutes and extend -all military honors to Kos
suth, at New York and other places. A grand
dinner will be given him at the President's house.
The rumored recall of Consul Owens, is con
firmed with a letter from the President, inform
ing him that his defence is wholly unsatisfactory.
Bets are offering largely on the election of
Summers, the Whig candidate for Governor of
Virginia. Secretary Stewart says that his elec
tion is more than certain.
The President has sent instructions to arrest
all the parties concerned in the Syracuse outrage,
and urges their committal and trial, on charges
of treason.
Commodore Warrington still lives, but there
are no hopes entertained of his recovery.
The ship Cyame will sail from Norfolk on
Friday, for Havana.
James Graham. of North Carolina, died on the
30th ult.

ST. LOUIS, October 10.
The Upper Mississippi is again falling. The
Missouri is very low, but rising. The Illinois is
in good order.
The Western Sabbath School Convention has
been in session two days. Several *solutions
touching the subject of Sabbath school improve
ments were submitted and referred to the ap
propriate committee.
JENNY LIND
Miss Jenny Lind gives a concert here on the
15th and another on the 17th, the first being for
the relief of the sufferers by the late fire. Tick
ets two to four dollars. She then goes to
Toronto, and afterwards to Pittsburgh, Cincin
nati, St. Louis, Chicago, Sc., returning to New
York about the middle of December.
The failure of Mr. "Brown creates little re
mark. The Western Banks are almost the sole
-sufferers. His liabilities are about $70,000.
The most intense excitement prevails in the
fishing towns in regard to the late gale at the
East. From New Beaufort and vicinity, not
less than 70 vessels are out. The wife of the
captain of the schooner Martha, hearing a ru
mor of the loss of her husband and his vessel,
committed suicide yesterday, leaving a family of
young children.
