WHY WHIGS MAY REFUSE TO VOID Full .IQ SIOI~I large portion of the %Ng iiikityiiirofeo* be, friends of thellnioir; ai4l wofbavtilno tioubt-, that they are truty;stopere.o ol oo°xii, : , With such we would say C4ONV words, and pre sent a few consicffiratians why they should with hold their votes from William F. Johnston. We do not call upon them to vote for William Big ler; hetause they 'may not feel tit liberty to VOW goinat.theregular—nominees --of their party ; but if they cannot ,conscientiously :vote for .a man who is in ftlior of sustaining the' laws of their-countryolgainst one raerelflrofeballig"t6 be of ,they party, they can starat home on the day of the election; and thus -show that, if the majority of their assumed `party leaders will thrust forward unworthy and incompetent men, they, ontheirpart, can refuse to sustain such an unholy proceeding. Every gotaktillien is bound, by his obligations to society, to vote fOr-subh men alone as will 'sustain the laws of his country.- Every lover .of his country will sustain the laws as thslare, even though he may be unfavorable to their con tinuance,—being willing to await the decision of the majority respecting any law he'May think of doubtful policy, - while respectfully urging reasons why it,otight to be repealed. But the -repeal of any organic law, is at once an abraga - - lion of the authority by which thatlaw was en acted; and every man of intelligence must at once see the Consequences of violating or abro gating a constitutional provision under a govern mentlike ours. It is well, then, to take connael, even from a political opponent, under such cir cumstances; but when we have the most power ful reasonings, and the most solemn statements, of a political friend, to guide us in our research es after political truth, who is there that will not weigh well those arguments ? Take then, the expression of the Hon. Daniel Webster, when speaking at Albany of the matters invol ved in this question. He said—speaking of ihe Compromise measures,— I desire to declare in the most einphatio man ner, that I hold these laws, and especially that which provided for the adjustment of the con troversy with Texas, to have been essential to the preservation of the public peace. * * * It was my conscientious belief, still unshaken, ever since confirmed, that if the difficulty with Texas could not be amicably adjusted, there must, in all probability, have been civil war and civil bloodshed.' Mr. Webster has on no occasion, since the adoption of gloss measures, held any other doc trine in relation to them : but has even incurred the bitterest censure of some who professed to be his friends, because he came forward in this un daunted manner to sustain the Union. The Washington Republic also, which is the organ of the most patriotic portion of the Whig party of the United States, says on this subject; " The Compromise, it is well known, is regarded by President Fillmore as the best, if not the only means of restoring peace and quiet to the country, and maintaining inviolate the integrity of the 'Union." What, then, patriotic Whigs of Pennsylvania, Will you say to William F. Johnston, who aspires to the highest office in the State; and whoSe elec. tion would be avirtual repudiation of all that has 'tiVerheretofore been regarded ns patriotism, and a pciwerfal encouragement to thisnenales of our freeinstitations ? He said, in his recent speech tothe People of Lancaster county, that .if he bad .heett a member of Congress, he never would have voted for the Texas Boundary Bill mid the Fugi tive Slave Law; and he further said that the Vision is in ho danger, and could never be dis solved." If, then, this man would not have sustained these great measures, Cm view of the testimony of a statesman who has never been timid in all his legislative edurse,) what is the inevitable, the b:Fesistable conclusion, that foroes itself upon 43very mind. It is, and can alone be, that he is wid real regardicu of the public peace and security; ,and, therefore, was in favor of civil war and civil bloodshed, and utterly indifferent to the preservation of the Union I We are perfectly satisfied that there are thou sands of Whigs in this State; who win never vote for Johnston. They declare that they owe al legiance no to man who does not value the peace and tranquility of their country ; and that as those are Johnston's sentiments they will not sustain his election. They say that the man who avows such sentiments deserves universal condemnation, and will receive it on the second Tuesday of October : that no man can receive themapport of Pennsylvania who is not the true and firm friend of the Compromise measures, and as he has.shown his hostility to those mea sures he shall be consigned to apolitical grave. The Whigs of Philadelphia We were well advised, months ago, that a Large body of the Whig merchants of Philadel phia had determined to exert their influence against Johnston. The reasons for this they have not hesitated to avow in unequivocal terms. They have said that the idea prevailed very ex tensively in the South, that the People of Penn .sylvania were Inimical to their rights; that much of the Southern trade that would otherwise stop in their city was diverted to New York ; and that, unless this impression was overcome, a large portion of the trade now enjoyed by our beautiful metropolis, would be irretrievably lost. We learn, by later accounts, that this sentiment fins greatly increased,—particularly since the occurrence of the awful tragedy at Christiana; and a late number of the Pennayivanian confirms the statements received from other sources.— Read the following and act according—Whig merchants of Pittsburgh, who value the interests ,your State and your aity:— - We understand that the Whig Finance Commit tee was out yesterday for the purpose of collect ing funds to pay the necessary expenses incident to the election ; and that in calling on firms who have heretofore contribut-d one thousand dollars each to help along the Whig cause, they were informed that they could receive no contributions from them. One firm, that has, on more than one occasion, contributed one thousand dollars, said to this committee, "we cannot contribute money to aid the election of a man who is hos tile to the interests of Philadelphia, and whose election would be regarded in the Southern At lantic cities as evidence that there was no love in Philadelphia for the Union.' " One of the committee replied "we muse have money—we cannot carry on the election without it." He was then told, "you must get your money from those whose names correspond with your condi datetit we cannot aid you." This feeling exists to a very, great extent along Market and Front streets, and we therefore feel free to assure the people of the State and the Union that the sen timent of the Philadelphia merchants is right. Ser. The Freedom's Friend, of yesterday morning, contains the following : BALTIMORZ, Oot. fitL—Kinkel arrived here, as had been expected, about 9i, P. M., in the steamer from Philadelphia, and was received by a committee previously appointed for the pur pose, large crowd of people had already as sembled at the wharf to take part in the cor dial greeting extended to this man, who, by word and deed, has battled for the Revolution, and whose name finds a lofty echo in the hearts of all Germane. After Kinkel had reached the shore, lie was, welcomed in an address by Dr. In the name of the Germans of Baltimore. Mr. Winkel, whose lofty, imposing, and hand dome figure, towered above tho multitude, re plied' to the address in a few powerful words that came from the heart, and went to the heart. The 4, Liederkrautz," dining the night, sere naded :Kinkel in front of the Eutaw House. `Here Kinkel was prevailed upon to appear at the doors of the Hotel, and expressed his ac knowledgments in a few hearty sentences. . AN AGANNIXNG-DECISION.' 'The following decision recently given' Judge COULTEIt, is , naentioned,hy a correspon dent of the Penragfronica. ..We'lhink it is one that should command the attention ef every ode; and as the People of this State are about tot choose their supreme Judges, it may be Well to! inform them, of. welt n, startling: decision as this, by a supreme Judge. • While' on this snb , ject, we would also observe that we have heard oil a number of tickets, that have been printed, purporting to be the "Denaocratio ticket," on which the name of Judge Coulter appera, and that of Judge Catapbellis omitted. Now to all Giese who wish to vote the ticket nominated by. our political friends at Harrishurgwewonld shy, thst the gentlemen who_ nominated that ticket regarded it as the strongest that could be sub mitted to the People—in point of mental capa city, legal knowledge; parity of character, end all , the essentials. necessary :tw Insure to our State legal. &eels - Rini of the' highest character for justice and equity. Read the following : The merchants of Philadelphia; , and the busi ness men of : the 0011Itt6;' generally, ought to be informed of a most extraordinary and alarming decision made by Judge Coulter, at the last Bit ting in Harrisburg The American Law Jour nal", of July, contains a. faithful - report of The decision. It was in the case Somers' Appeal, and the substance of the decision was, that a creditor who had obtained a judgment in good faith, by confession, toren honest debt, 'and en tered it up against real estate, so' thatit was per fectly secure, might be deprived of that securi ty tbur or five days afterwards, without any act ot his own, and against , his - con Sent, by hia in soWent debtor's making an assignment of his creditors, if the debtor knew at the time of con fessing the judgment that he .was itiselVentr whether the creditor knew it or not. This de- cisiOn has shocked the Vthole legal profession, front one end of the State to the- other. It has alarined the whole business commenity-through out the Commonwealth. If a Philadelphia mer chant, learning that a large debt in the country is in jeopardy, Bends a clerk, or goes himself, and by suit or confession, after a great deal of trouble and anxiety, succeeds at last in obtain. , ing a judgment and entering it up as a lien on real estate, so as to ma,keit perfectly secure, ac cording to Judge Coulter's ideas of law and jus tice, four or five days afterfhtimerchant has re turned to Philadelphia, thinking that all is safe, the insolvent debtor may destroy the lien of the judgment, by making an assignment of his property: In our opinion, this is neither law, nor justice, nor common sense. If this is law, no one is safe in the transaction of his business. A judgment, which may be destroyed at the plea Sure of. the judgment debtor, without the consent of the judgMent creditor, is not , worth a a straw. The very idea perfectly rideulows A Judge, with such _crude notions of law and justice, is dangerous to the business interests; of the country. Thu Judge is the same cousin- , tent gentlemen who has the credit of writing the address in favor of Markle, for Governor, in 1844, and afterwards, in the same fall voting for Shank—the same man who wait a candidate for nomination at the Democratic Convention, and, failing in that, was taken up ,by the Whige—the same man who despises alike the names of Whigs and Democrats, and claims to be an Old Federalist—and yet Richard 'Coulter has been placed before the people of this Commonwealth as a candidate for the Supreme bench '. All we have to say is, that every consistent -politician, on either side, as well as every commercial and business man in the State, ought to vote against him. Mr. Hobbs and his Gold The London Express objeots, as does Mr. Hobbs, to the ungracious manner in which Mr. Bramah paid over his 200 guineas for having his lock picked. It also gives tho following ac count of the display made of the 200 guineas by Mr. Hobbs at the Cristal Palace:— " The American department was again the great feature of attraction, Mr. Hobbs having with a fine Barnum touch, gothis reward changed into sovereigns, and spiced them' out under a glass case, with a policemen keeping guard and an inscription Informing the spectators that there were two hundred guineas which.lmdbeen awarded for picking Bramah's look. This was an argument that appealed to the meanest ea pacityi, and excited so much curiosity that the place was a scene of bustling all day, every one wished to assure himself by occulos proof that the American had really won the day. The hero of a hundred locks was himself the/observed of all observers, and complained that even in the street he suffers one of the ditiogieitiblia con : comitants of glory, in being followed by crowds on hie way to the palace." Awful Tragedy. We oopy the following from the Nashville Banner of the 26th trust.: A gentleman from infoims us an awful tragedy was enacted In.:thtit comi ty last Week. It seems that two brothers, na med Harper, one living in KentimitY, the other in Gibson county, had been disPuOin to the ownership of a slave. There is quite a presqure for money, such as must naturally occur at inter vals wader any tariff, or system of commercial policy; bat our merchants, who have had sever al years of prosperity, have stood under it man fully, and met their payments 'with *great promptness.—N. Y. Journal of Conannve. Such ere some of the reasons urged by this would-be legislator, against the introduction of the Bible into our common schools, in face of the universally conceded, facts, that the history of the world attests that wherever the Bible ob tains a free circulation, and its 'important doc trines are taught and regarded, there civil liberty is found to flourish and 'equally true, that wherever the precepts; of the; Bible are disre garded, and its:teachings spurned; there, discord and anarchy, oppression and tyranny, are trium phant. The tragical abenni of infidel France ut ter solemn testimony upon this point; where her deluded and-infatuated populace attempted' to substitute the phantom Benson for the Bible, and enthrone Passion for the Bible's God. So thoroughly convinced were our revolutionary Fa thers that thlitshirinekof the Bible were essential to public virtue andcivil liberty tlustthey openly appealed to its pages for light, and its Author for )direction. Virtue is regarded as a corner atone of our free institations; and, therefore, it is of pri mary importance that the youth of .our. land be early impressed with its principles - before their minds are pre-occupied with sentiments and feelings antagonistical to our country's welfare. Hence, the sages of the Revolution; and the veis eritand best statesman of the present day, .unite in deelaOng it of essential importance, that the doctrines'of ‘ the Bible be made the tribunals of. our appeals, rukd the text-book of our morals. The Bible hss'been and is constantly perused end studied by tha - parest minds, without die covering any of the vulgarity or obscenity fan cied by this McKeesport sage-of improved ethics. Professor Newman, of Bowan - hi College, in his system of Rhetoric, reatarks, after"giving a pas sage from the writings of Irving, in Whte c k a Bi- Ne quotation is made, 4 , This beantifulpasme afford% an example of a Scripturaiallusion, is highly pleasing. Allusions of this kind, will always be understood •, and often, from their elevated nature, add much to the beauty of writings. Scripture is a pure stream, flowin4forth from the throne of God." As to the incorrect orthography, and bad grammar, complained of, by this legislative as pirant, we demur against his verdict in the' premises, upon the grounds of total and entire incompetency on his part to decide. His per 'emptory decision Upon these departments of Bi blical Literature, ,must have excited profound astonishment in the minds of those acquainted with his eradite attainments hi these important 'branches of a common school education. Lord Kaimes, in his Elements of Criticism, and other eminent writers upon the same sub ject, have not hesitated .to introduce Bible quo tations as examples of stjle and composition as proper Models' far young writers, Profes sor Newman, already quoted, .ohserves,- iitte ferring to the writers of the 16th Century, land I quote again to answer the gentleman's 4th allegation against the imperfection of the English language and the ignorance of the writers of those. days)--"The writers of that golden _age were finished scholars—men of knowl edge, wit and refinement,—and we -admire their skill in the use of words,—their rich? figurative language, and the smoothness and harnionrof ther periods." In conclusion, I would ask the voters of Alle gheny county,—where appeal after appeal is made in behalf of the Bible cause,--if it will harmonize with true consistency, to send from the midst of our Sabbath Schools, our Churches and ocr Bible Societies, a represestative to the Flails of Legislation, holding such monstrous and wicked doctrines, as that the Word of God is too obscene and vulgar to be read in our. Public Schools ; and thus bringing its doctrines and precepts into disrepute; weakening the mean tires to virtue ; and giving loose reins to the un bridled passions of man's corrupt nature ;—or will you declare, by your votes, tbat Party dis cipline and Party prejudice is so strong as to overawe the dictates of wisdom and the convic tions of duty, and send to represent a Christian community, in a Christian Legislature, an open defamer of the Christian's Bible? A LOVER or CORRECT TEACH-MG. McKeesport, October 7th, 1851. llgetites. litappa & LAY ON :- In yotir remarks upon, the unfitness. of Judge McClure for his present position and the danger which may result from his re-election, I have not noticed the following incident which passed under my own observation, and which, I think, exhibits so clearly and forcibly his, general in decorous demeanor and great proclivity for in justice, that Ideem it desirable that it should be laid before the public. Some short time after his appointment to this Judgeahip,-he established the rule - that the argu: ments for new trials and itrarrest.of judgment should be had instanter, when the motion was made, of the propriety of which rule it is unne cessary to speak, when all know the superior advantages of that, which sets apart a day for such arguments, and which is the almostuniver sal custom in Courts of Law. Li course of time, a cause occurred in which , a tavern -keeper, on the corner of Fourth and Ross streets, (whose name I have forgotten,) was indicted for keeping a disordeply house, and for whom John 1). Mahon, Esq., one of our ablest, most honorable and gentlemanly lawyers, appear ed as counsel. In progress of his defence, Mr. M., after having examined some six or eight wit nesses, was proceeding to call others, when he was interrupted by Judge McClure, who said it was unnecessary to occupy more time, as , six witnesses wotild prove a fact as well as ahundred. 'sir. M. thinking his point made out, desisted, and the case went to the Jury. When the Jury returned, Mr. Mahon was:: en gaged in another cause, and, in order that the verffiet might be received, was interrupted in the =main' atwn• of a witness. The verdict being for a conviction of his client, Mr. M. rose, and as in duty bound, moved for a new trial. Notwith standing he. was at the time involved in another oars, this most sapient expounder of the laws required him to proceed at once to argue his mo tion. Mr. M. verynaturally, and any other than Judge McClure, would tuiveankiesed 'reasonably 'objected, but finding that nailing lessiwould suit this-4. mostrightful judge," consented, and re quested titri * t-cross Me street to his office to get his books.22lw4this.was reused him, and he was ordered to proceed at once or be altogether sit 'ent. . - Whan ho /lad with indignation very prop erly refused to speak, "the wise and upright Judge" immediately passed sentence upon the defen dant. That Emoha, palpable outrage should have been I committed by a Judge in the nineteenth century -is well nigh incredible, yet such is the fact as above narrated. That such a man has been nomin cited-for re-election, shows what opportu nities a designing official possesses to labor for his own advancement, and is a treble reason why the present incumbent should be removed. lam not nearly so anxious for the success of Mr. Craft, as for the defeat of McClure, as I think the ends of justice loudly demand it. Oh I that I could reach the ear of every voter of Alleghe ny County I I would pour into their hearts such an account of the acts of this unsound lawyer and•ungentlemantly man, that theywuuld sooner write their own death-warrants than'aid in rein stating him. I would beseech them for the pro tection of: their wives and children, for the safe ty of their lives and litierty, for the sake of out raged humanity muLdegraded jystiee to,pause end reflect before thei act Iwotdd re mind them that tea years of misrule may be the result of their ill-advised step ; ; and *here' the truth would be hilly knovn, Locruld not doubt the effect. * * * Oteober 7, 1851. gia, We have been absent for a week among the " country people," who are wide awake like the "rampant lion" determined to swallow whiggery.
