Iforthem Lights. —The sky was most brilliant
ly illuminated last night by what is called the
Northern Light. Its strength and brilliancy
created great excitement; the fire bells rang,
and citizens homed to and fro in search of the
fire, as they snpposed it; bnt not being able to
find it they finall settled down on the conclusion
that it was merely a tun-thower. Shortly after
the alarm, they all “knew it,” and notone could
be found who went in search of the fire.
Wire Putting. —The storm on Saturday night
blew down several of the O’Beilly telegraphic
poles on the Lake line, between the Penitentiary
and the Marino Hospital below Manchester.
Yesterday morning persons went over to fix up
the' line ; when they found that about a mile of
the wire "was gone.. -This is dangerous wire pull
ing, as there- is a standing reward by the oom
pmiy of $6OO, offered for the conviction of any
one so transgressing.
The boys yesterday were again busily
engaged, during. the rain, in driving up the
porkers to the pound adjoining the Mayor's
Offi.ce. A few days quietude has had the effect
of throwing the hog owners off their guard, and
the boys readily take advantage of it.

SSF 1 The lines not ! fceing in working order,
there’s no newß.
Phillips* Fire innlhllstor
The great expense, and to some degree ineffi
cy of the present mode of extinguishing fires,
causes great attention to this new method*—
There is no longer any doubt that the Annihi
late r” is a great discovery, cheap and applica
ble under ordinary and extraordinary dream
stances.
The United States Agency will soon be open
ed in New York, and we think,we cannot give
onr readers a more acceptable article than the
following, which is part of the “Circular” of the
American Agency:
The prices of machines, and of charges, are
as follows:
Size of Price, including Price of each
Machine. one Charge. spare Charge.
No. 1 $lO $126
No. 2 20 1 76
No. 3 25 2 50
No. 4 30 3 00
No. 6 36 3 50
The Machines can he made to order of any.
size, at a proportionate price.
No. l.'the smallest size, is valuable ior ex
tinguishing fires in chimneys, and small apart
ments.
No. 2. is used with effect in larger buildings,
and at the outset of a fire, and has the advan
tage of being the most portable of the sizes
deemed available for houses.
Nos. 3. 4 and 5 are the hand maohines of
greater power. No. 5 can be carried by a lady.
Nos. 4 and 6 can only be handled to advantage
by a man, and are preferable for large establish
ments, as they may be effectively used for street
fires.
In addition to the hand machines, there are
street or distriot annihilators mounted upon
wheels, and intended to be drawn by firemen
in the usual manner. These machines are pos
sessed of continuous power, and will emit
through a hose a stream of vapor upon a
burning building for any desirable length of
time.
The portable machines are so simple in con*
struction that they are not liable to get out of
order, and their applioation is so easy that any
person may effectually use them. The chemi
cal charges may be preserved any length of
time. These machines furnish an infallible
protection against the destructive consequences
of fire, as they are always ready for constant
use, and contain within themselves the certain
means of extinguishing accidental fires as soon
as discovered.
The Fire Annihilator is made to evolve a hu
mid vapor, and to emit it with great expansive
force, so as to penetrate into, to search out, and
to extinguish the fire; but while the vapor emit
ed is destructive of fire, it is innoxious to life,
and even tends to purify an atmosphere charged
with smoke. Nor does it injure the furniture or
goods which may have escaped the action of the
fire.
The merits and practical utility of the Patent
File Anjuhilator have been thoroughly tested
and are acknowledged by the most eminent
scientific men: and the machines have been, by
command supplied to the royal palaces of Queen
Victoria, the Crystal Palace of the World’s Fair,
the mansions of the nobility, the principal man
ufactories in Great Britain and France, the
theatres, churches, and other public edifices, be
sides steamboats, shipping, &c.
As these machines, and especially the chemi
cal charges, can only bo manufactured in very
large quantities, and by the aid of oomplicated
and extensive machinery, no machines will be
ready for delivery before the 6th day of October,
from which date arrangements have been made
t> manufacture and deliver a large number of
machines per day.
On the 22d of September, however, a Register
will be opened at the office for the reception of
subscriptions for machines, and every persoq
will beserved in regular rotation, according to his
priority of application. When sent by moil, the
application will bear date with the day of depos
iting in tho post-office. The price of the ma
chines in all cases to bo paid at the time of
subscribing, and seven per cent interest will be
allowed on any time (if any) that said money Re
mains over ten days Wore the order is supplied!
In this arrangement, however, priority will be
given to all city corporations, and proprietors of
large cotton or other manufactories, where great
risks from fire exist, and where the premium
required for insurance is high, also theatres,
hotels, and large steamers, where many human
lives are jeopardised.
Every machine will be stamped with the name
of tho Company, and date of the patent, and as
the Company are determined to accommodate the
whole public by supplying machines of the most
durable material, and the chemical charges of
the most approved manufacture, at the above
reasonable prices—they will prosecute to the
extent of the law, oil attempts to Imitate, coun
terfeit, or infringe on said patent, as well as
every person who may puroh&se and use such in
fringements. All importers of foreign machines
or those having them in possession, will be pros
ecuted-
Each machine will be stamped with the name
of the State, the county or city for which they
are sold, and they can be used in no other local
ity without a written permission from the Agen
cy. Nor can any purchaser of a machine pos
sess tho right to sell the same in any other town
unless he has previously purchased the territory
where said machine is td be sold. Every pur
chaser of a machine will receive a certificate
authorizing him to use the' same in the town for
which it is purchased.
