So much has been said .and written on the
subject of education and the training of children,
that it seems hardly possible to advance a new
idea. Some propose one age to begin the culture
of a child, and others think another.the right
age. From my own experience, I would say
begin the education with the life of the child.—
Itdß impossible for any one of us to say at what
age a child begins to understand and reason.
The foundation of an education may be laid
in a quiet, easy way. Listen to without inter
fering with your children’s prattle; when a
wrong pronunciation occurs, correct it; when a
wrong principle or moralis drawn from the child
correct that also.
Furnish your children abundantly with picture
books ; these, by being read and explained, will
teach the child to seek for more information. —
Impart to every young child as much knowledge
as he Will seek, but force nothing, or you will be
foiled with your own weapons, and produce dis
gust and satiety. .Inthis way withouteither the
parent or the child feeling it, be will impercep
tibly be acquiring. much useful information,
while at the same time he wilt become more dis
ciplined for the more serious and laborious course
of his future education. Above all, never allow
the most trivial departure from truth to pass
without a severe reprimand. A child will always
judge of the enormity of its offence by the amount
of its punishment.
Never shall I forget the first falsehood told by
my only son, he whose entrance into life had
so nearly been marked by the departure of his
mother- He was my spring ohild; he came
with the flowers, and like them, was bright, hap
py and joyful- The wealth of our first parental
affection waslavisiied on that boy; and how great
was my grief when I found that tho purity and
innocence of childhood had deported, and hehod
toldhiafirst untruth! That I considered an
epoch in his life: and laying all work aside, 1
took the child upon my knee, while mildly and
gently- but m strong language. I explained to
him the meanness and cowardice of a lie, and
the great sin he had committed against God
and man. He was set apart, and not allowed
to associate with any one for a length of time.
His little heart was almost breaking: aud hod
I not felt that it was for his eternal welfare, I
could not have left my child for the first time
with -ut a kiss. At night, when I next saw my
darling, he was asleep m his little bed; but oh 1
what tears I could have shed when I thought of
the first sin that had entered into hia heart!
On the second night after this occurrence, as I
leaned over my child and talked to him before
lie slept, I said. “My precious child, have you
asked God to Forgive you for the falsehood you
told?”
He answered. v *\esi. momma; I forgot it when
I said my prayers, but I asked him after I was
in bed- Anxious to know what the child s feel
ings were- I asked him what he had said. Put
ting his little arms around my neck, and draw
ing-my face close to his. ho whispered, -• 1 said,
Please: Goodman, forgive me for that story I
told yesterday." 'Then I asked. •• And so you
think he has forgiven yon He readily an
swered, “Yes, mamma. I feel as if he has. My
tears of sorrow were turned into tears of joy.
My child had been forgiven. He bod offered his
first voluntary prayer, and he felt that it was
accepted. Some tune after, while at play, l no
ticed that he was inadvertently about to mis
represent something, but instantiv checking him
self. he remained silent for a long time; and I
saw that my lesson was remembered: tho seed
bad “taken rooty for it was sown npon good
ground.”
Instinct of Daclu.
A/oteLminded person, who writes to the Mail
about the Vermont State Agricultural Fair at
Middlebury. is responsible for the following,
which is more'than we ever knew, ana it may
be new to Bomeof our readers:
4 ‘One follow had a brood of wood ducks grown
large enough to fly. and would do so if their wings
had not-been cropped. Ho saw the old duck
go into the hole of a tree abont oO feet from tho
ground The cruel boy mounted the tree and
about tea feet below where tho old duck went
in he cut a hole and there found twelve eggs.
He carried them home, put them under a hen.
and they were hatched in a few days. I told
him he was cruel, bathe said the young ducks
could never have got up to the hole where their
mother went m. and would have perished. I
observed to him that ho must have a better
opinion of the old dack s instinct than that. I
assured him that the young docks soon after
they were hatched would, at the suggestion of
their mother, seize her feathers with tbeir bills,
and not only hold on until she earned them up
into the hollow of the tree to the hole where she
went m, but also hold on until she earned them
down into some pond or stream. In this way
young ducks were always iransported from
their nests in hollow trees and from one stream
to another. I have seen an old wood duok flying
with her baok covered with her young ones from
one stream to another. The young fellow star
ed, but finally believed me. And well he might,
for such is the fact.
The Patience of Woman*
- How strange that the patience of Job should
be considered so remarkable when thero are so
many mothers in this world whose patience •
equal if it does not exceed his ! What would
Job have done had he been compelled to sit in
the house- and sew and' knit, and nurse the
children- and see that hundreds of things were
attended to during the day. and hear the chil
dren complain ? Or how would he have stood it
if. like some poor woman, he had been obliged
to raise a family of ten or twelve children, with
out help, spending months, years—all the prime
of life—in washing, scrubbing, scouring, mend
ing) cooking, nursing children, fastened to the
banse and offspring, from morning to night, and
from night till morning sick or well. —storm or
sunshine- his nights often rendered miserable by
watching over lus ohildrcn! How could he have
stood all this: and m addition to all other
troubles, that of curses and even violence of a
drunken companion ? How would he have felt
after wearing out his very existence for his ten
der offspring and a worthless companion, to be
abused and blamed ?
Job endured his losses very well, for a short
time but they did not endure enough to test the
length of his patience. Woman tests her patience
by a whole life of trials, and she does not grum
ble at her burdens; We are honestly of the
opinion that women has more patience than Job,
and instead of saying * the patience of Job we
should say c the patience*of.woman!

The Cumberland No. 2, Capt. Miller, Irom Pittsburgh,
with about 100 tons of dry goods fur the various points
along this river, and for St Louis, struck a snag near
Rising Sun, la., about 32 miles below Cincinnati, on
tbe 17ih instant, and sunk immediately. The boat was
thought to be broken in two, and would prove a total
loss. Her bow was in deep water, tbe water being on
the boiler deck, bat the stern was above water, and
there was a possibility of saying a portion of her freight
without damage. The boat lies directly in the channel.
The log or snag that she was wrecked on tore a hole o f
