No n 6°fd was Chosen, the consideration of the
matter being postponed till the next meeting of
411 It ß announced that the State Fair had
changed its time of meeting on the 29th and
80th of October; thereby interfering with the
Allegheny County Ploughing Match, which was
to come off on the 80th of October.
A discussion ensued as to the propriety of
changing the time of the ploughing match, as
many farmers in Allegheny county, who are
members of the Society, wish to attend the Sc
ciety, wish to attend the State Fair.
Mr. Way moved that the time oi holding the
ploughing match, be altered to Tuesday the
eleventh .of October. Carried unanimously.
On motion of John Murdoch Jr., of Peebles,
the following preamble and resolutions were
adopted’:
Whereas, It is with feelings of surprise we
learn that the time of holding the State Fair,
has been altered to the 80th of October; and
whereas, all the fairs held in the several coun
ties had fixed the time of holding their County
Fairs, in accordance with the former action of
the State Fair.
Therefore Resolved, That the Managers of the
State Fair are hereby requested to be more
careful in fixing and adhering to the time they
first appoint, as any alteration is productive of
great inconvenience, to every County Fair in the
St ßesolved, That the Secretary of the Board of
Managers, be requested to send a copy of these
resolutions to the Secretary of the Pennsylvania
State Fair. . ’
Mr. Miller moved that the committee on print
ing be authorized to procure tickets for the fair.
Carried.
Captain John Young moved that five hun
dred diplomas be printed. Carried unani
mously. . „ ~ .
On motion it was resolved that Mr. Martin be
appointed a committee to inform Mr. George
Parkin that five hundred diplomas are required.
Mr. Martin moved that instructions relative
to the depth of ploughing be given to the plough
men, who are to be instructed to plough uni
formly from five to eight inches deep at their
pleasure, the nearer they approach the square,
the better, but by no means to go within the
square.
On motion the Sooiety adjoured to meet on
the Saturday preceding the fair.

It appears from circumstances that have
come to the knowledge of the authorities in and
about Johnstown, that there is a large and well
organized band of robbers, consisting, ns al
leged by some of those arrested, of over a hun
dred, whose head quarters are in Cincinnati;
and they hpve for some time past been commit
ting depredations to an alarming extent at
Johnstown and vicinity, in breaking open the
cars and taking the goods which are passing to
the west- Last week eleven of these men, be
longing to section boats, principally, were ar
rested and imprisoned. Great quantities of
goods and money were found secreted about
their residences, and in trees through the woods.
The police are actively engaged in looking up
the rest of them.
The Great Panorama.— This immense paint
ing, now open at the Athenaeum, embracing all
tho grand and beautiful scenery upon the sea
and shores of Mediterranean, is well patronized
and becoming very popular. We trust that all
of the pupils of our various schools will embrace
an early opportunity of visiting this great in
structiTe exhibition.

several frame buildings and sheds on Second
street, Allegheny City, the properly of James
Sterret, were ‘ consumed by fire. The houses
were tenantiess. It is supposed the fire was the
work of an incendiary. The loss will not ex

Casualty. —Dr,:A. G. Walters yesterday met
with a aerions accident by being precipitated,
with his horse and, buggy, over a bank m the
Eighth Ward. His collar bone was broken, and
he was otherwise injured.

crously illustrates the necessity of a reform in
medical nomenclature. Very muoh confounded,
he says, was Dr. Doane, a few years since, by
a remark of one of his patients. The day pre
vious the doctor had prescribed that safe and
palatable remedy, the syrup of buckthorn, and
had left his prescription duly written in the usual
oabalistio characters—“ Syr. Rham. Cath.” On
inquiring if the patient had taken the medicine,
a thunder oioud darkened her face, lightning
darted from her eye, and she roared ont: “No !
I ean read your doctor writing—and I ain’t a-goin
to take the Syrup of Ram Cats for any body un
der heaven!” .
