his meeting his engagements. Thns he loses
his time, and. loses the value of a friend in need,

A man, too, whose word can be relied on in
respect to the quality arid of his goods,
will never lack for customers. Every one who
has traded with him, and found him worthy or
confidence, becomes an advertisement recom
mending others to give him their patronage.

The Earthquake near Maple*.
A letter, dated Naples, Aug. 24th, gives the
following particulars os to the Into Earthquake:
“I have received several details relative to the
dreadful disaster which occurred on the 14th
lust, in the province of Basilicara, in this king
dom,’ and about one hundred miles from the cap
ital A list of more than fifty villages is given,
in which greater or less damage was done, in

been destroyed, and in all several lives have been
lost amid the ruins of fallen houses. The great
• est sufferer, however, was the town of Melfi, a
place containing 10,000 inhabitants; time-quar

Muoh interest and excitement exists in refer
ence to the approaching eleotions. _ _
The condition of society at San Francisco is
somewhat improved, owing to the activity of the
Vigilant Committee, and the increasing zeal of
the legal authorities. Crime also seems greatly (
diminished. .
In the interior, bbsiness is brisk; but owing
to the large supplies of produce prices have
slightly drooped.

A serious fire occurred this morning in the
Mulberry street furniture rooms, which, in con
nection with a block belonging to Dewey, were
entirely destroyed, together with a number of
other houses and stables. The loss is about

The fire was the work of an incendiary.
Col. Jaa. H. Norwood, of N. C., Indian agent
for upper Mo. agency, left here yesterday for
