Court of Common 'P&ai.—Esfor6. 'the Hon.
Judge McClure.! ‘ A
Eighth'l)at—THDßBDA7,Acatrar2l.
-" Jos. Anderson, ro-called.—Theamount of trip
tolls was verysmall; but a few cents a day; it
would not amount tomore than $lOO. per year.
There was'hothing allowed to Managers; we
agreed inihe Board to allow the Managers to
pass ton-free; instead of paying them for. their!
services; it waa to Managers of other .bridges
by way of reciprocity. The decrease of toll at
our bridge in 1341 and .1842,. was owing to the
opening of tho Hand Street bridge.
Cross .Ea—Have not seen as many females, as
males pass the bridge; it gave me no concern
which passed the mostToU.keepers. made the
reports as to . the number: of females crossing the
bridge j- on this report the reduction of tolls
was based think thereptrft was in writing, but.
don’t know- positively; report was handed to
the Board; think the report was the number of:
females passing, and how much toll was collect
ed from them ;• remission • of tolls, on : females
commenced with Managers of-the St: Clair St
Bridge. ' The’Hand'Strcet.Bridgo permitted fo-.
nudes to pass free—none, other, 1. think; t> -The
toll committees -of all- the three bridges^acted
jointly in the • reduction of. tolls. The Mechan
ics Street Bridge charge females toll.- The :toll;
collectors are still engaged at the bridge.
Sir. Aiideraouaskedleave to explain in refer,
enee to instructions toCook, as to Todd passing,
&c. Cook did ask mo, saying that Todd • wonld
be wanting to pay his yearly tolls; think my
answer was, “letiim run;” to:have nothing to
do with him; i meant, not to.let him pasß as a
yearling; ■ - ;■
E. W. Cook, jwom.—l hold office of the As
sessor of yearly tolls of .Bridge;, went there on
tho 17th March, 1846, and have been there 1 ever
since; am acquodnted with Jas. Todd; was as
sessor of tails when Todd applied to me to pass;
think Todd applied to me several times-to pass
as a yearling. . In 1816 took it .twice: in 1847
I refused. He was uot'refnsed- by any resolu
tion of theßoord of .Managers. It is usual-to
give mo;a;copy..of a -speoial resolution when
passed; .never was famished with any resolu
tion relative to Todd; think Todd.applied to
pass again in 1847 ; he was refused, but not un
der any , resolution of the Board. When Mr.
Todd first called, I refused him, stating that wo
hod a difficulty with him; that we declined tak
ing him by the year; should we ohnnge our col
lectors, probably the same difficulty wonld occur
again; have no recollection of using the name
of the Board or the .committee on that occasion.
In 1849 Mr. Todd called and said he wanted to
take toll by the'year. The first time he oalled
in 1849,1 told him the same difficulties still.ex
isted ; somecousiderahle conversation tookplace
about the old grudge. In a few days he came
backhand in the presence of other persons, of
fered me $3 toll; told him I declined‘having
any thing to do withhim or his money; was net
noting under any resolution, of the Board, at
either time, to my knowledge. -I assisted in
keeping*tally of the number of females passing
by the trip; think it was kept for sixdays; tho
tolls averaged 20 cents per day—lo cts. at each
end for females paasing-by the trip;
Cross-ixamined.—yfaa there during a part of
six days; han’t tell how, many females pass who
do not pay by the year; the great crossing is in
the morning and evening; shouldn’t think more
than one fourth the persons crossing the bridge
were females; there was a list of ycarlies who
were in arrears handed to me, but it was errone
ous, and is yet hanging up in the officethere
was no book of accounts for yearly toll over
handed to me, and no arrearages paid to mo of
any account.- The number: of-yearlies who cross
at present is a little over 1100; the entire num
ber whopass I do not know; of the.lloo year-,
lies don’t know what proportion are females.

mony the- 6th.section- of the chnrter. of the

The evidenoo here closed, and Mr. Woods, for

Fifty i Patriots Captured and Shot It
The steamship Cherokee arrived last night
in four days from Havana, with $2,640,680 in
freight, and $1,650,000 in the hauds of the pas
sehgers, of whom there were about 200. She
brings the California mails, and San Franoisco
dates to the evening of the 15th of July, one
.day later. She passed the Empire City going
into Havana.
" The acoounts from Havana are of the most
serious'nature. We are indebted to the Purser
of the Cherokee for the following fearful narra
tive: ' . . ‘
The steamboat Habanero, while cruising off a
plaoe called Bahia Honda, 40 miles west of Ha
vana, captured a party of 60 patriots, who were
in boats unarmed, and, report says, steering for
New Orleans.
They were brought to Havana by the frigate
Hdbanero, on. Saturday morning, the 16th ult.,
at one o’clock, Ai M., and were placed on board
smother Spanish frigate, lying in port, and were
executed 15 minutes pastil, the same morning,;
by being shot on the public road in Havana, and
at the least calculation in the presence of 20,-
000 spectators. After they were shot,: they
were dragged by' the feet, by negroes, and left
to the mob, who commenced stripping them of
their clothes and carrying them on stioka through
the streets, yelling like so many demons escaped
from the bottomless pit, and. seeming to wreak
vengence on they knew not what.
Many of the passengers of the “Cherokee,”
who were on the spot and witnessed the execu
tion, were pointed at with a sheer of contempt,
and were stopped in the street and insulted in
the most shameful manner, being told that they
were Americans, and of one and the saine party
—that one. of these days they would all be served
in the same way.
It was dangerous at night, suoh was the state
■of feeling, for an American to be seen in the
Streets alone.
The following is a list of, tho executed:
Col. S. W. Clendennen, Capt. P. S. Sewer,
Capt. Victor Kerr, Capt. T. B.' Veacey, Lieut;

The steamship Falcon, while' on her way up
the coast of Cuba, from Chagres, was fired at
three times by the steamer Habanero, and was
obliged to leave, when she was boarded by the
Officers of the Habanero... After the Falcon
stopped, the officers of the Habanero oheered as
if they had gained a glorious victory. This is
the third time the Falcon has been served in the
same manner. ;
The U. S, ‘ sloop Of War “ Albany,” was at
Havana.
We learn from a passenger by the steamer
Falcon, from Chagres to Havana, that on the
morning of tho 16th, when off Bahaia Handa,
the Falcon discovered a large steam frigate in
chase of her. When first seen, she was stand
ing directly across her bow, evidently intending
to cut her off. The Falcon, however, kept on
her course, and soon left the frigate eight or
ten miles astern-. This vessel was the “ Isabel
la Catholics,” formerly the Canard steamship
“ Calodonio.”
While she was. still in chase another steamer
hove in sight, and giving chase succeeded in
heading off the Falcon. She at first fired two
Bhotted guns to the leeward, of which the Fal
con took no notice. She then ran down along
side and fired a third time, directly across the
bows, although she had the American colors fly
ing. The chase then ordered the Falcon to heave
to, whioh was done, when the officers on board
the Spanish steamer gave three oheers.
