TIM GAZETTE ON SWINDLING.
We find that the G.cuutie has again' taken the
field against the Democratic Canal Commission-
era, charging them with "swindling" the peo
ple by issuing free tickets to their friends, to'
entitle them to pass over the public works. But
not one word is said in reply to our interrogatory
respecting the number of similar tickets granted
by a late Whig Canal Commissioner. This would
not suit the purpose of the pious ." and truth-lov
ing editor; and consequently we hear nothing
upon the subject. But it is a pity that while
thus attempting to Tinily Democratic Canal Com-
minim:ten, he has not sense enough to see ibit
he is most sotmdly belaboring his friend andvol- ,
unteer witness, Mr. T. J. Brousss. Indeed; it is
wiric
rather Strange that as MC. BIGTIAIS is called a
lawyer, he did not consult with him about a
matter so deeply affecting both. of them. But
- hear what the scrideer-aditoroft
in reply to our several articles. of the last few
days. After asserting. the PACT ?of the
present Commissioners having "issued free 1
tickets to the members of the Legislature and
others," he says that tee have "not broken the
force of the [Gazette's] statement in the slightest ,
• degree; but the Canal Commissioners lie at this I
moment under the imputation of s most dishon-
orable and unlawful act; and if either they or
their defenders were possessed of a particle of
honorable principle, they would push the matter
to a full investigation; unless conscious guilt re
strained them."
If the Canal Commissioners have been guilty
of an "unlawful aet," . they are undoubtedly lia
ble to punishment. of some kind i for laws are of
butlittle moment unless there is apenalty attach
ed to their violation. In this case the friends of
the Commissioners can scarcely bo expected, by
any human being—even though tun., pions—to •
push forward a prosecution. Such things are
left, by all the usages of society, to those who
are indifferent to the accused; to the officers of
the law; or to those who are at enmity with the
alleged violators of the law.
Bat where does this statement of the Gazette
place Mr. Masan and the late . Canal Comission
er referred to? If the act spoken of, be unlaw-•
Jul when done by Democrats, it surely must bo
equally unlawful when performed by Whigs; and
we think that Mr. MOHAN himself could have
told his learned and pious? and' patriotic, and
just, and truth-loviat friend the Deacon, that he
who particinsi in l the peeunitiry benefits deriv
able f‘. eva wfalact i b tte thanthe ac

tualperpetratoriof the act: that "the receiver in
as bad as the-thief:" and that consequently, Mr,
Burnam stands forth:before the People as aself
convicted "swindler;" and, in accordance with ,
the universal sentiment of Mankind, heis.ta.be
viewed as one of the worst of the erlminalst.he
cause, having Shared their confelenee, and'Par
ticipated in the benefits of their unlawful sets,'
he proves himself to he Oitcof the most despica
ble of all characters alcatic informer.
Now what value is to be attached to ench Ites-: ,
timony, and to the arguments, or a t a t e umati,;-...
even by the Gazette to sustain it? .lnet such
value, in the public estimation, as wonld'be at
tached to the volunteer declarations of any mem
ber of a band of "swindlers,"who might seek to
expose his fellows, eithertinnuglipiqne, or spite,
of a desire speedily to enrich himself, by descend-
Ang to the lowest point of *degradation.
But the astute editor of the Gazette appeals to
"honest Democrats," and tells them that "agents
of the State, chosen by your _votes, have violat
ed their oaths, and the law—that
_they, have
volunteeewitmeas, gsq., and the.
Whig party in general; but tii4eolo..

air The above confirms what we have said
heretofore in regard to the immense business
tramsacted on the Cleveland, Columbus, and
Cincinnati Railroad. Nearly all the travel that
passes over that Road to Lake Erie starts from
Cincinnati and climes from points South and
South-West of that place. By making the Rail
road from Pittsburgh and Steubenville. there to
contreet with the Steubenville, and Indiana Rail
road, our city will secure an immense amount of
business and travel she has now lost. Should
not this fact c-indnee every citizen of Pittsburgh
to use active exertions to bring , abont a speedy
completion of the important link in the great
chain of Railroads we have alluded to 1

feited his bail to appear in the criminal court at

quite in character that a man who would com
mit a theft should hold his honor so light as to

does &Ir. Chaplin injustice. From a alight
knowledge of the individuals who became his bail
in Washington, we do nut doubt that they advised
him to go am ay before his trial: and that they
are willing to run the risk of having the amount
of their suretyship made up to them by the abo
lition party. • Whether they will be made whole

much doubt whether they will ever get a cent of

SLAVERT.—There are now in Delaware, accord
ing to the last census, 2,289 slaves. In 1840
there were 316 more than this number. During
the year previous to taking the census, there
were 174 manumitted, and 19 ran away. One
was manumitted to every 18, and one ran away
out of every 120. Should manumission go on at
the same rate, the State will in a few years he
rid of slavery.
It will be seen from the following that slavery
is decreasing in this State much morerapidly than
in Maryland and Virginia:
Is The number of slaves in Maryland is 00,368
or 873 more than ten years ago, in 1840. In
1810 there were 111,602;
in 1820, 107,398; in
1830, 102,294. During the year previous to tak
ing the census, there ran away from that State
216 slaves, and 136 were manumitted. In Vir
ginia there are 472,026 slaves, and in one year
there ran away 89, or ono to 5,134,1 and 211
were manumitted, or ono to every
