The Braddoehhi Field plank Road
On Wednesday afternoon, in company , with
some friends, we rode np as far as the Six
' Ferry,'on the new Braddock's Field. Plank
• Road, and were delighted to find it in admirable
order. The workmen are now giving the "fin
ishing touches" - to the road, and in a few days
it will be entirely completed. The travel over
the road is already quite large; and is rapidly
increasing. A steam Ferry Boat has been
placed at the old Six. Mile Ferry, and a good
landing has been made on each side of the river.
Already our citizens are beginning to seek lo
calities along the beautiful valley of the Monon
gahela ; and before another year passes by ev
ery desirable spot between ,the city anck Brad
dock's, will doubtless be bought for Piivite resi
dences. The receipts•of the Plank Road are al

lt is rerdlikinnaiiig, Niiheriose is passing along
the streets, to see a little, ugly cur, sitting upon
the side-walk - and trying to park himself into no

him, even so much as'to say "get out !"—(that
most disgusting , of all exolimations to dogs)—
he Will run out into the street and bow-wow most
vociferously at a coach-wheel, a cart-wheel, a
wheel-bairew, or even at a child's carriage !
So anxious are some of these little wretches to
make anOise, or perhaps to let others know that
they condo so. We have sometimes felt so much
annoyed at these creatures that we wished for a
moment we had some weapon at hand with which
at once to silence the noise and rid ourselves of
ti:
.e annoyance ; •and then we have remembered
the law of kindness—hurt not any thing unne

more vehemently as the echoes of his own voice
sounded more loudly - in his care.
How often have we wondered why curs should
be permitted to remain in cities at aU; and then
we heti° thought the brutes are necessary, per
haps, after all. Even curs_maybo indispensable
in making up the grand harmony of a city, life.
They can growl, end snarl, and bark ; and, upon
occasion, they can bite too ; especially if it be
something that theylike to eat: and if they are
cowardly, and among the first to assail the sheep
pen ; and are the least , valuable of all dogs, why
still, if we cannot see the good end they are de
signed for, we should rest in confidence that the
All-Wise has not created any thing that is use
less; and that even the ugly, growling, barking,
and snappish cur is designed for some wise pur
pose in the order of creation.
Reader, if there are any further reflections to
be drawn from this subject, you will please to
gratify your fancy to the fullest extent.

Wool Trade of Ohio.
But few of our citizens are aware of the grow
ing iniportince of the wool trade in this State.
We have just had an interview with our enter
.pritiing and intelligent fellow citizen, Mr. F. C.
Sessions, who for some years has been en
gaged in the wool trade, and from him we . learn
some items of very general interest. Mr. Ses
sions, has just returned from Cleveland. While
there, he met with some of the principal wool
dealers of Ohio, and after a comparison of notes
they found that eight millions of pounds of wool
will be sent out of this, to the eastern markets,
this year. The average price of this year's clip
Is thirty-eight cents per round. The quality of
Ohio wool is fast improving, and for manufactur
ing ptirlibses it is preferred to any other wool
in the market. This wool goes toßoston, Prov
idence, and New York. The great mass of it is
used in the D'Laine factories of Massachusetts
and Rhode Island.
Mr. Sessions has purchased over three hundred
thousandponnds this season, and has paid out to
the . farmers of Franklin county and vicinity,
about one hundred and thirty thousand dollars.—
The highest price he paid was fifty-seven cents
per pound, for slot in Licking county. He goes
to the farmers and buys directly of them. .
Ohio has a great name abroad for the produc
-tion'of wheat and all kinds of grain, pork,, cattle

Twelve Men Dirorwmed of Park's But'-'t
Full Pertlonlaxs•
We mentioned the fact on Friday morning that
twelve men were drowned at Parks Bar, on the
Yuba River, one day last week, and we are now
able, by the Marysville Herald, to givefull I:kale- ,
ularS of the melancholy' o ccurrence.:. It-seems'
that about twenty persons , started to miss the
river in a ferry boat--that the boat was loaded
to within five or dzinciles of the gunwales,-that
as soon as the boat was started from the - shore
into the swift current, it struck a rock and upset,
f the rope which was attached to the ferry break
ing,) throwing all who were in the boat into the
river. According to a statement of the Secreta
ry of the Park's Bar Mining Company, those
who were drowned were either members of the
company, or in its employ. The following are
the names of those who perished, and their former
places of residence: ~ . -

A meeting of the poople of Park's Bar has
been held, to inquire into the causes of the ac
cident. A committee appointed for that purpose
reported that the ferry rope on both sides of the
river was rotten and much worn by the rocks ;
that it was a three-fourth inch rope, and not
strong enough for more than two men to cross
at once with safety. At this meeting a vote of
censure was unanimously passed against S. B.
Terry, the ferryman for negligence in not mak
ing his ferry secure, after being repeatedly noti
fied of its insecurity.
A very moderate punishment truly, for such
criminal negligence.,
Discoveries of the irrit Onnt ury.
There has been no period since the commence
ment of the world, in which so many important
discoveries tending to benefit mankind were
made, as in the last half century. Some of the
most wonderful results of human intellect have
been witnessed in the last fifty years. Some of
the grandest conceptions of genius have been
perfected. It is remarkable how tho mind of
the world has ran into scientific investigation,
and what achievements it has effected in that
short period. Before the year 1800, there was
not a single steamboat in existence, and the ap
plication of steam to machinery was unknown.
Fulton launched the first steamboat in 1807.
Now there are three thousand, steamboats tra
versing the waters of America, and the time
saved in travel is equal to seventy per cent.—
The rivers of every country in the world nearly,
are traversed by steamboats. In 1800, there
was not a single railroad in the world. In the
United States alone there are now 8,707 miles
of railroad, costing $280,000,000 to build, and
about 22,000 miles of road in England and
America. The locomotive will now travel in as
many hours, a distance, which, inlBoo, required
as many days to accomplish. In 1800 it took
weeks to convey intelligence between Now Or
leans and Philadelphia, and now it can be ac
complished in minutes through the electric tele
graph, which only had its beginning in 1843.
Voltaism was discovered in March, 1800. The
electric magnet in 1821. Electrofying was (Re
covered only a few years ago. Hoe's printing
press, capable of printing 10,000 copies an hour,
is a very recent discovery, but of a mast im
portant character. Gas light was unknown in
1800; now every city and town of any pretence
is lighted with it, and wo have the announcement
of a still greater discovery, by which light, heat,
and motive parer may be all produced from
water with hardly any cost. Daguerro commu
nicated to the world his beautiful invention in
1839. Gun cotton and chloroform ore discover
ies : f but a few years old. Astronomy has ad
ded a 'Amber of new planets to the solar sys
tem. Agricultural chemistry has enlarged the
domain of knowledge in that important branch
of scientific research; and mechanics have in
creased the facilities for production, and the
means of accomplishing an amount of labor
which far transcends the ability of united men
tal effort to accomplish. The triumphs achieved
in this last branch of discovery and invention
are enough to mark the last half century us
that which has most contributed to augment per
sonal comforts, enlarge the enjoyments, and add
to the blessings of man. What will the next
half century accomplish? We may look for
still greater discoveries, for the intellect of man
is awake, exploring every mine of knowledge,
and aearchin: for useful information in every

Tug Tuna Docrrains.—The Upland Union, the
organ of the Democracy of Delaware county, in
speaking of the contemplated ratification meet
ing that is to come off at Radnor, on the 2d
proximo, says:
All meetings of Democrats devoted to the as
cendency of democratic principles, and inflexi
bly bent upon the support of nominations made
in conformity with party. usages, carry with
them salutary influences, and confirm the weak
and wavering, who aro liable to be misled by
disorganizers. We encourage Democrats to at
tend the ratification meeting—keep the flag of
democracy flying, and frown indignantly on any
and every attempt to withdraw support from the
Democratic State ticket. Our motto is, "Stand
up to the rack, fodder or no fodder." The man
who encourages opposition to the regularly nominat
ed ticket, or any part of it, is the enemy of demo
cratic ascendancy, and is giving "aid and comfort"
to the triumph of federal wh(agery.
CUSTOM RECEIPTS.—Tho following is a state
ment of the revenues received at the principal
ports for the year ending June 30, -1851:
New Y0rk....581,766,199 St. L0ni5...5218,882
Boston 6,677,640 Cincinnati.. 105,191
Philad'a 8,667,888 N. Haven.. 102,189
Baltimore .... 1,047,278 Mobilo 76,184

Charleston... 600,712 Oswego 91,557
Portland 209,080 Richmond.. 70,286
Savannah.... 208,994
The new fiscal year promises even a huger
revenue than the last. Thus New York begins
the first week of the month with about a mill
ion, Philadelphia with $200,000, Boston with
$187,000, &c. • ,
COURTSIZIP . ,OF TER OLDEN TIMEB.-A sound
and orthodox divine of the elder school had paid
his addresses to a pious lady rather advanced,
and for some years he made the regular visits
and went away "afore milking' time." The
happy day was at length appointed, and ae the
"grand climacteric" approached, the good man's
love began to increase. On the last night of
courtship, before the bridal hour, the good man
said to his affianced—" Patience we have been
long engaged; the time of our union is at hand;
let us have one kiss before our marriage." "Ye
may take one," said Patience, "if ye will be de
cent about it." Let us ask a blessing then,
Patience," said the divine. The . blessing on
special mercies was invoked. The kiss was
taken and given. "It was good," said the
preacher, " let us return thanks 1"

the assistance of a staff, and notbeing able to endure a

of many celebrated physiclans—last year, used fourteen
bottles of Dr. Trash's Magnetic Ointment—all, however,
failed to afford permanent relief Last November I Con
