Panion, the gallant C01.,' and ourself - sallied forth to "catch' up.". With rapid strides we started in hot pursuit, but bad proceeded but a short distance when we were met by Wm.,V. McKcan; Esq.,: Associate Editor of the Pennsylvanian, whose acquaintance we had made the day pre vious. He kindly extended to us an invitation to be present at -the Democratic celebratiorito be held on Smith's Island in theafternoon and at the same time presented us with a c ard of admisalon, which' he had already enveloped in a note, directed. We felt grateful for his at tention,- ,and after-expressing our thanks for his ....Igindneis, we proceeded to " , herry." ' • '-After, catching- up with our company, vie Tie 'lad the following Engine and Hose Houses:— :./Hbernia Engine, Weceacoe Engine, _Franklin Engine, Hope Hose, Niagara Hose, and a num= 'ber of others ,whose names have slipped' our memory, at all of which we were most hospita4 bly received and elegantly entertained. Their • bonzes,' one and all, are fino structures, about - four stories high, -and the different apartments, halls, etc. are arranged with great taste andeon venience. Sonic of' the Companies have splen did libraries, so that the members may spend a pleasant evening in obtaining valuable and use ful information. The Philadelphia. Firemen, generally, so far es we were able - to judge, are men of good character. We are sure, for hos pitality, they cannot be surpassed. Having visited the various Companies, we re turned to our hotel about noon, very considers= bly fatigued, we .. assure you. The afternoon being given up to ourselves, 'each - pursued his own bent. Of this, Foster, J. .Harper and ourself took advantage, and posted over to Smith's 'lsland, a lovely spot, situated in the middle of the Delaware river, almost op posite the:centre of the city, and is under charge of Charles Worrel; an active and efficient Demo prat and .a very 'clever gentleman. ", - - On The Island, 'after taking a survey of it, and admiring ,the splendid bathing arrangements, we.met our fellow townitnan, R. Biddle Roberts, :Esq., and A. J. lthey, Esq., Editor or the Moun tain Senthml, by whom we were introduced to Horn R.-Kneass, Esq.; Richard Young, Esq., Dr. Stakes, and many other of the leading poli ticians of the State. About five hundred sat ,flown to' a most sumptuous dinner,—Horn It. .fineoss presiding. The whole celebration from beginning to end was most brilliant and gratify ing; and we were pleased to see the estimation in which our friend Roberts was held by the Philadelphians: On being toasted, he responded in amanner not only worthy of himself, hut ex ceedinglyereditable'to the West. 'We felt proud of him—of having, on such an occasion, so able a representative. But a truce to this. - In the evening, after leaving the Island, our company, in a body, went to Broad and Market for the purpose of witnessing an exhibition of fire-works. We went for that purpose; but af ter waiting some two helms, in which time we saw about three rockets ascend, some of us re tired to take the chill- of the water which we were going to drink. The fire-worke was a fail ure, and the fellow who was paid by the city to get it up, apologised in the papers the next day, and stated that he would, some of these days, give one at his own expense. We think we nev er saw so many people together as there was present on that evening, of every age and sex ; hut• they were miserably disappointed. After taking the chill of the-water, as we before said, some of us went to Barnum's Museum, and were delightfully entertained with a view of the many curiosities; to attempt a description of which, would occupy more ti met and space than is at present at our disposaL We had there a con versation with the-•• Invisible Lady," (a descrip tion of whom 'can be found in the works on magic) and asked her many questions which she answered with. great accuracy and promptness. She said that she was not married, although re markably good looking. She thought the Sprit usl were among the " incomprehensi bles," and made many funny remarks, to the great amusement of the crowd of listeners. • The Fourth of Jaly, any where in this coun try, is a greet day; but in l'hiladelphia it is a very great day. Every one is permitted to enjoy himself to his utmost capacity. We had almost forgot to mention the most lu dicrous scene that we ever saw. A. company of fellows, some with standing collars covering half their heads,- and disguised so as to " cut a figure," paraded the streets on horse frames, with a banner flung to thi breeze, designating themselves as Santa Anna's life guards. You would have laughed till your sides were sore to see that coMpany—horees andriders. On Saturday—however, as local matters are pretty scarce just new we'll tell you that to-mor row. A Bcduction in Gas.—The gas company have reduced the price of gas 25 cents. on the 1000 feet—from $2,35 to S2;10. Besides making a diseottnt of 10 cts. on the thousand feet for prompt payment. This reduction will tendgreatly to extend the business of the company, and rill 'no doubt prove highly beneficial to all parties. Father-Matheto.—The Rev. gentleman Will of at the Cathedral Chapel - every -morning during the week, and Subsequently administer the Temperance Pledge. He will also attend daily, for the same purpose, at the residence of Bishop. O'Connor, where he will feel most happy to receive the visits of his friends and disciples. Barbarous.—Two colored men had a difficulty in a barber shop, yesterday, on the bank of the river,•when one of them named Clement Rogers drew a razor and inflicted several severe gashes in the side of the other, named Green.
