A RAILROAD TO STEUBENVILLE.
• We are pleased to learn that a bold and deci
ded movement is about to be made between this
.city and Steubenville; with the view of supply
_lug this link in the great Railroad chain from
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to Columbus, Ciu
. einnati and St. Louis. A Meeting of the incor
porate:a will be held en Thursday next at the
•half way house, on the . Steubenville turnpike,
when Capt. Caaraxs N.srzon, of this city, will
be present, and submit some important facts to
the consideration of the meeting. . The farmers
of Washington and Allegheny counties are de
termined that this Road shall be built without
delay and many of our enterprising citizens
have promised their money and their influence
to assist in pushing the project forward to final
completion. _ .
£ The Harrisburgh American, ono of the
most unscrupulous Federal papers in the State,
quotes an article from the Blairsville 4palachian,.
finding fault with the resolutions of the Reading
Convention, and publishes it under the following
head, . "Another Bolter; from the Reading Plat
form." It is but right that the fact should be
known abroad, that the Apalaehian does not pre
fstsi to be a Democratic paper. To our certain
knowledge, it has not supported the nominations
of out party for the last five years. It supported
Van Buren and' Adams for President and Vice
President, during the last Presidential campaign,
and fins been known since then as a Free Soil or
Abolition print. The present Editor, Mr. 'Mar
, nuAs, is a very worthy young gentleman, and
we have no doubt aims to do what he conceives
to be right; but it is unfair for the Federal pa
pers to quote his remarks as evidence of disaf
fection in the Democratic ranks. The nomina
tions made by the Reading Convention give
universal satisfaction to the Democracy of Penn-
tsylrania, and Messrs. Biat.r.s. and CLOVES Will
be elected by the largest majorities given in the
State for the last fifteen years. The "Reading
- Platform" 'is broad, strong, and, national; and
eillhold all honest and true Democrats, as well
as several thousand patriotic Whigs who cannot
consistently vote for such a political trimmer as
Wu. F. 4011218T0N. _ ,
DEMOCRATIC CLUBS.
We cannottoo earnestly urge upon our Dem
_ emetic brethren of this county, and throughout
the State, remarkes the Carlisle 'Volunteer, the
necessity of a complete organization. The Fed
eralists are actively engaged in marshalling their
forces for the fight, and it is reasonable to ex
' poet that the most desperate and reckless means
will be resorted to, for the purpose of carrying
out their iernicious doctrines. Deception, false
-hood; pipe; laying, fraud, bribery and corruption
Will again be resorted to by our Federal oppo
nents. How importimt, 'therefore, is it that the
Democratic party • should organize for the con
test_, and be prepared to meet and effectually re
pel
the many Federal slanders put in circulation
•
by the adherent% of Governor Johnston? Eve
' .7y - coxnty; township, town, and village in. the
State, should form DEMOCRATIC CLUBS, for
the purpose of disseminating correct principles
Amongst the people of the State, and thus over
. throw the false statement put in circulation by
- our opponents. , This is no time for procrastina
tion—we must cast aside,our luke-warmness
. at
once, and goto work determined to do our duty
faithfully, Zealously, and effectually. Remeni
-tier, Democrats of Pennsylvania, that the old
Keystone standti pledged to her sister State for
. 15 0 0 Pajoricy.fer:til Democratic ticket. • Will
you not, each 'and every one of you, assist not
only by your vote but by your influence and
hearty, and efficient support, to redeem this
• pledge, and to swell the Democratic army to
numbers that will afford even a greater majority
. for our candidates? We believe and trust you
each Demacratin Pennsylvania deter
. - Mine to make one more vote besides his own for
the Democratic ticket let each ono feel it in-
cumbent !von himself to convince and convert
his luke-Warra cr.deceived friend or neighbor of
his error—let him be convinced by argument,•
facts, and documentary evidence that the Callßo
of Democracy is the cause of the people—that
by its piriietufty only, can the people of this.
. Union eipect prosperity and liappiness. . It is
the same glorious cause for which our forefith
• era fought,-,bred, and conquered—it is the cease
"which knows no baseness, cowers to no danger;
oppresies no weakness—destructive only of des
, potism, it. is the sole conservative of liberty, la
bor, and property." Democrats of Pennsylva
nia ! you have the power in your own• hands to
carry the State by 20,00 majority. Then be
up and doing, and the victory yon •will achieve
will bring gladness to the heart of every roptib- .

This handsomerand important highway is rap
improving. 'Front . Diamond street to Logan
street, the city - authorities are laying down gas
pipes, while v at the other end of the Avenue,
frani.Oakl and to Ba.rker's corner, beyond 'East
Liberty; the Turnpike Company are constructing
a Plank Road in the most substantial and im
proved mode—unlike other Plank Roads in this
neighborhood, which have only eight foot tracks
and no clay road, this one has a track sixteen
feet wide, and .a good summer road on each side,
forming altogether a most safe; convenient, and
pleasant road. A projectis in.contemplation for
improving the Avenue still farther; by opening
•
it by a direet ; cut into. Fifth street, at the corner
of Ross. Should this succeed (and it is the
interest of the whole city that it should), Fifth
street and Pennsylvania Avenue will form but
ono , street. . .
The Rail Road will not:touch upon any part
of this route, lwhich will therefore always be
free from the inconvenience 2nd dangers experi
enced on streets in the vicinity of a Rail Road; .
nor will the travelon it be subjected to the de
lays incident to a road leading to extensive cem
eteries. We have heard that two of our, enter
prising citizens have lately purchased from N.
B. Omuo, Esq., a tract of land just beyond Oak
land, and arc about to divide it into town lots,
and it is said that a large Hotel is to be soon
erected, and also a fine' building for a Female
Academy. ,
Being the nearest, most level, and best made
road to the beautiful valley of East Liberty,
Pennsylvania Avenue must soon become a great
thoroughfare for business, as well as the most
pleasant and fashionable drive from the city. *

SUMMIT A. P. RAILROAD, June 19, 1851
• Dear Poet : Presuming that a letter from the
mountain might not be uninteresting to your nu
merous readers, I will endeavor to f'urnish you
with all the items of interest that have lately
come under my notice.
Mr. W. S. Campbell, Esq., whoresides here, and
was one of .the prominent candidates for. Canal
Commissioner at the last State Convention, is
fast making political as well as personal friends,
and is actively engaged in cheering up the De
mocracy for a glorious triumph at the coming
fall election.
The Portage Road has been doing a very
heavy business this season, and with a prompt
ness and dispatch heretofore almost unprece
dented in the history of its operations. Its ca
pacity for business has of late been materially
increased, and it is managed by Capt. West with
great ability and credit to himself as well as sat
isfactory to the State. .
For the last two weeks we have had quite a
lively time, owing to two railroad lettings hav
ing been held at this place. One was the State
letting for the avoidance of the incline planes ,
on the western end of the Portage ltoad, and
the other the mountain division of the Pennsyl
vania Railroad. There is a great deal of very
heavy work on this division of their Road, and
with the greatest force of hands that can be
worked to advantage, some of the sections will
require nearly three years for their completion.
With the exception of the large tunnel, the old
contractors were generally the successful bidders.
There are two tunnels on this division of the
Road—the large one is about two miles from this
place, and is 3600 feet long—the small one, near
Jefferson, is about 600 feet in length. Mr. Rut
ter & Son, of New York, are the contractors for
the former one, and Elinor Cr. Shaffer for the lat
ter. The large one will be worked from the two
'ends, and by three shafts, so as to hasten its
completion as much as possible. One of the
heaviest sections, which is situated at the west
ern end of the large tunnel, was alloted to the
Messrs. MeCiranns & Riley. MeAvoy, Clark &
Co., have also some very heavy work at Catoning
feint, on the eastern slope of the mountain.
The portion of Road that has been let by the
State, and will immediately commence to build,
avoids planes No. 2 and 3 on the Portage road.
The large tunnel, and some of the heaviest
work on the mountain being so close to ns, must
necessarily create new life and an increase in
the amount of business done in our usually quiet
village.
This region, of late years, has become quite a
resort for invalids and persons of leisure, and
although it is yet early in the season, we have
been honored by the visit of many from the
caster cities, all of whom were delighted with
their sojourn, and hope to visit us again. We
expect to have great numbers during the sum
mer, and l am sure it would be difficult to find a
more desirable place either for health or amuse
ment. ' M.
WHAT IS SAID ABROAD.
The Chicago Daily dry - us, a spirited national
Democratio paper, in publishing the Resolu
tions adopted by the Reading Convention, makes
the following introductory remarks:
PENNSYLVANIA ALL RIGEIT.—The Democracy of
glorious old Penns4lvania are all right. The
following resolutions passed at the into State
Convention, which nominated the sterling demo
crat and upright man, Col. Bigler for Governor.
aro worthy. of a party that has ever stood by the
.Union and the Constitution, with all their noble
memories and compromises, and the country
Mast, in future, look to the Democratic party, as
the only'one true to the the Union, and the up
holding of the laws of the land. With such
a leader as Bigler, the democracy of Pennsyl
vania will be triumphant in the coming con-
Mon. William Wilkins.
• This accomplished and distingaished Demo-
Crat and Lawyer was unanimously chosen Presi
dent of the Judicial Convention and his speech,
on taking the Chair, was worthy the man and
the occasion, as, also his closing remarks after
the Of the Convention had been trans
acted. He expressedgreat fears, at the open
ing,.thateomething might be done to reflect die
crediton the highest Judicial tribunal in the
!mid, and said he felt a greater responsibility
resting upon himself than he had over felt in
any other position in which he had ever been
placed—that the Chief Justice was to be select
ed by the mere toss of a copper, and that an in
efficient man might be elevated to that solemn
and important._ trust. After the nominations
:Were iannounced, hOwever, the countenance of
theiladge brightened, and he stated to the Con
-vention that all his fears had been dispelled—
that in the persons of Black, Campbell, Lewis,
:Gibson, and Lowrie, we had & Ticket, each of
Whom were abundantly' qualified to be the
Zhief Justice of Pennsylvania. The endorse
ment of these gentlemen by such a man as
Wm. Wilkins, will fully satisfy the • people of
their high qualification for the trusts to which
they have been called.' • We hope to have a cor
rect copy of Judge. Wilkins' remarks in time for
our next paper; a bare synopsisof them having
been given by the reporters.—Bedford Gazette.

Letter from Judge Woodward.
The following is the letter ofJudge Woodward
referred to in the proceedings of the Judicia
Convention:
Vinicesonnnr, Juno 9, 1851
H. Wraonv. Esq. : Dear Sir—l thank you for
your telegraphic dospatch, just received, and
which I answered instanter, in these words:
4, My letter, which you have, is as positive a
declination as I can gite. I will write you at
Harrisburgh."
I am exceedingly sorry that any body thinks
it their duty to press &nomination on me. From
a•very early day and uniformily, I have declared
my purpose not to be a candidate, and last Feb
ruary published that purpose to the world, in
the correspondence which I placed in your hands.
I have favored the nomination of Judge Kidder,
in correspondence and conversation, and have
trusted that any local claims which might be
recognized, would be satisfied in his person.—
My strong desire now is that he should bo nom
inated, and if any difficulty exists which yon
cannot surmount, I very much prefer that you
should give up our local claims and shall not nom
inate me.
The condition and demands of my family for
bid mu to think of a judicial station. dislike
to obtrude this subject in detail in public notice,
but are not one's own conscientious convictions
of duty, when distinctly asserted, entitled to
respect? (Night they not to bo conclusive with
every body! Is it necessary for me to go into
detail to demonstrate that I cannot educate my
children on a judicial
. salary ? I hope you
do not think it is. I hope nobody thinks so.
Unfortunately, I said in my published letter
something about private sacrifices for the pub
lic good. This, most unexpectedly, has been
'seized hold of by someporsons, and I have been
asked if in a crisis that should seem to demand
my nomination, as a means of reconciling party
difficulties, I would turn my back on a party
who have always manifested kind dispositions
to me, and refuse, in any event, to run if nomi
nated. I have replied that my nomination, if
my letter is respected, could only happen on the
principle of sacrificing personal interests and
wishes to the public welfare: and from such a
sacrifice I would not shrink, if called to make
it. That what I had written, I would stand to,
and that if I mast he nominated, as in the con
tingency contemplated in that letter, I would
ran. Along with such replies, 1 have urged
Judge Kidder's nomination by every considera
tion I could press.
What more can I say now I supposed when
that public letter was written. that there was
an end of my connection with that subject.—
Ilad I anticipated some things that have occur
red since, I should Dave avoided the hypotheti
cal expression that has kept the subject. open.
I regret the useof it, but "what is writ, is - vcrit."
There I stcind just where I planted myself in
that letter. I can't be guilty of the weakness
of unsaying it. If the nomination is given me,
against the strong expressions of that letter—
against my constant protestations—against your
and Mr. NichoLsceisrepresentations, and against
the wishes of other personal friends in the Con
vention—l must consider it a. 9 given in the
contingency contemplated in that letter, and,
therefore, I cannot say that I will decline it.
Hence my remarkto you when i handed you the
letter and my telegraphic despatch, that it is
as positive a declination as I am at liberty to
make.
Let me hope that we shall all he gratified in
the nomination of Judge Kidder, and that no
occasion will exist for resorting to so unwilling
a subject as
Your friend and humble servant.

SUMMIT, CAMDRIA COVNTY, Pa
June 7, 1851.
Cot.. J. W. fonxsv—Dear Sir:—l arrived
home last evening from the Reading Convention;
and although, in common with the other unsuc
cessful candidates for the office of Canal Com
missioner, I naturally feel a little disappointed,
I sincerely rejoice, however, thatthe Convention
have selected for this important office my friend
Gen. Seth Clover, a radical Democrat, consistant
and unwavering in his devotion to the men and
measures of the Democratic party, and in every
respect a worthy and competent gentleman..
The nominees of that Convention shall receive
my cordial support, and - my feeble exertions
shall be used to do all that a man can do bon:
orably, to consurrunato the glorious victory that
awaits the Democracy at the ensuing October
election.
To my friends who so generously supported me
in that Convention, I return my heartfelt thanks,
and assure them that the kindness and friend
ship manifested by them towards me shall not
be forgotten as long as gratitude retains a breath
ing place within my hears, and it will be the most
pleasing duty in my life to perform if at some
future day I can ha any manner do thorn good
service. •
Very truly and sincerely, par friend,
WM. S. CAMI!DELL.
SLAUGHTER. AMONG THE SHEEP.—A large RUM
ber of sheep have been killed by dogs in the vi
cinity of our Borough within the last twowceks.
On Monday night last, Mr. Robert Officer lost 20,
and had 80 wounded. On one night of last week,
Mr. Adam Beck, of South Strabane, lost about
fifty; and about a week since, Mr. John Moore,
of Mt. Pleasant, lost about one hundred. We
know not how this evil can be remedied, unless
it be to kill all dogs that are suspected of fond
ness for mutton; and oven then the damage may
be done in many instances before suspicion ari
ses. One bad dog will lead a whole neighbor
hood of his canine acquaintances astray, and it
is quite impossible to reform a dog after he has
manifested a disposition to prey upon Shoop
therefore, all such dogs should be killed imme
diately.— Wash (Pa.) Examiner.
" DUTCHMAN" AND " GEDBIAN"—These words
are often interchangeable, as if they signified
the same thing. "Dutchman," properly signi
fies natives of the Netherlands and Holland, of
whom there are but few in this country. "Ger
man," is a name given to inhabitants of Austria,
Prussia. Wurtemburg, Saxony, and other German
States, and is the proper title by which to desig
nate that large, industrious and frugal por
tion of our popalation commonly called "Dutch."
MONUMENT TO AB EDITOE.—The citizens 'of La

Looking at the population of the three king
doms, it may easily be preccived that there is
a considerable difference amongst them with res
pect to temperiunent. The Irish are gay, ar
dent; the Scotch arc comparatively cool, steady
and cautious; the English are, perhaps, a fair
average between the two. I remember it was
not inelegantly observed by a friend of mine,
that an Englishman thinks and speaks ; a Scotch
man thinks twice before he speaks; and an
Irishman speaks before ho thinks. A lady pres
ent added, 4 , A Scotchman thinks with his head,
on Irishman with his heart." This allusion to'
impulse, operating more rapidly than delibera
tion, is a kin to Miss Edgeworth's remark, that

his heart; the truth, however, being, that he
" obeys" his heart, not always waiting for the
dictates of his head.

Er 'Mai to' Parents. One great source of
disease in children Is the unhealthiness of parents! it
woald be Just as reasonable to expect a rich crop from
a barren soil, as that strong and healthy children should
