A difficulty ensued between these parties, hence the pro?ocution. - The Jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and prosecutor pay the costs. BacYr.--Com. vs.. Robert Kane, Casper Fink, Albert Horn, Joseph Riddle and Cnarles Rice, charged with being engaged in the Buck Beer Riot. . • Fred. Kraus, sworn:—On' the 12th of May about two or three thousand. persons assembled on my 'property, in Pitt township, near the Eighth Ward. Riddle, Horn and a person na med Smith had a quarrel; I requested them to keep quiet, and they said they would; after wards the difficulty was renewed. Saw Riddle with blood on his face; said that Horn had done it; it was about 3 o'clock. About 4 o'clock saw Kane strike Knapp° with a stone or slung-shot; .Trovillo knocked down my father-in-law; Kane and a lot of rowdies jumped over the fence and threw stones for half an hour. On the breaking out of the riot the party was partiallidispersed. christoplier.Och was stabbed.in de side with a. knife; I carried him home. Some 40 or 50 were engaged in the riot; saw Albert_lions, but did not see Rogers or Rice during Abe riot. I had opened a rock vault (the only ode; perhaps, in the United . States), and invited my friends; did not invite Trovillo, Kane or Riddle. All I saw of the riot was what took place in the house. lames.McFerren, sworn.—Am a constable. Marcellns and myself were taken to the scene of • the riot about 8 o'clock in the afternoon; re mained till dask, when we went out; there was a great crowd there in the house where they were telling the beer, and outside of it—bnt then there was no disturbance; shortly after Riddle and Horn had a fight; Riddle•was taken to the run to get the blood washed off his face; a large crowd returned with him, and cried out, '.'Where is that rascal Horn. I took him behind - the door and held my stick out to keep them off; they then went to another part of the house. I, then told Horn to go away; or they would kill him ; -he slipped out, and the crowd made a rash after him. Saw Fink there; but notin'the crowd ;_didn't see Kane there till after the row was over. Andy Dunn struck Horn just after he left the britriiug ; the affray then be came.general—stones flew thick, but could dis tinguish nothing. There were a great many Germans in the rowdy party. The row broke up the festivities, and ,the sale of the beer was stopped. In the party that came up from the Run there was about 15 or 20; saw in it Dunn and Trovillo—they knocked down old Lowry at the Run. Saw Kane in the house after the sto- ning was all over; his appearance indicated that he had not been in the fuss, which surprised me somewhat, thinking that if there he would be in it: Horn was - attacked' by the rowdies. It was about 5 o'clock when I first saw Kane. The at** tack of this party appeared to be directed against no ono but Horn. Jim. Steinberg, sworn—Saw Horn and Fink fight; the latter didn't want to fight; there was a crowd then got out on the Minersville road and stoned each other; didn't see any of the defendants here in the" riot; saw Kane after wards; didn't think he had anything to do with it; don't know how the general melee com menced. A number of other witnesses were examined, whose evidence was merely corroborative. The .court adjourned before the examination was con cluded. liumsrrniro.—We learned yesterday of one of the most daring and in a measure successful at tempts at kidnapping that we have heard of. A citizen of Pennsylvania, and a resident of Pitts burgh, in the Seventh Ward, named Chas. Wed ley, has just returned from chains and slavery. The circumstances, as we gleaned them, are as follows: Some time since Wedley was talking of taking a trip to the East, when a white and col ored man, of doubtful character, proposed that he should accompany them and they would pay his expenses, to which he assented; and they all started on foot for Philadelphia. When they had got as far as Licking Creek, in Bedford county, they were met by a • band of men, who seized on Wedley, and despite his struggles he was hand-cuffed and carried into Maryland. His companions went on a short distance, but soon returned to this City, and on one of them being questioned about Wedley, he replied that he was in Philadelphia. The kidnappers took him to the house of a gentleman in Maryland, to whom they wished to sell Wedley; but the colored man being ques tioned, the gentleman thought he was too know ing, and declined purchasing. Wedley was then chained, and the gentleman entered into a con versation with him, and learning the circum cumstances that made- him a slave, and being satisfied of their truth, he waited an opportunity and released him. Wedley arrived in the City some . time during the week. His companions are at present in prison on other charges, and no doubt prosecutions for abduction will ensue. j*r We were not a little amused the other day to see two "item seekers," in quest of some thing from which to make a few lines, deeply interested in watching a game of pitch and toss between some hack-boys on the levee. After gazing for some time with the deepest interest on this most exciting game, they solicited a loan of some pennies from the boys, and they would "go in," but the boys with a significant look pulled down the lower lid of the eye, and replied, "Do you see anything green here." . Finding this no go they manifested their interest in the game by mating side-bets between themselves for drinks, to be taken at the first house that would trust. We saw them some. time' after wards up town, but they still looked very dry. NOT Gonto.—A writ of habeas corpus was, granted by the Supreme Court, Bitting at Han, nsburg, ez relation Joe Dowes, who was kidnap ped from Michigan and is at present in prison . here. The Habeas Corpus Act of Pennsylvania requires4,din order that the prisoner may not be taken out of the jurisdiction of the Court in which he is, to avoid trial—that if the writ be granted within fifteen days of the next term of the Court in whose jurisdiction he is, the pris oner shall answer to it in that Court.. Accord ingly, yesterday morning Dowes was brought into the Court of Quarter Sessions, and on mo tion of Hon. Charles Shaler was remanded to prison, and the action of this Court be sent to the Supreme-Court. ,per The lecture last evening of the Very Rer. Dr. Moriarty, for the benefit of Mercy Hospital, was largely attended by both sexes.— There was a greater number present than could possibly, be seated, and the oratory of the speak er filled if not surpassed the anticipations of the audience; the brilliancy 'of his wit and satire were of the finest.order. It is no flattery to say, that as an orator he has few superiors. The subject, "Ireland and her destiny," was handled with great ability, and to tho infinite satisfaction of all present. _., gar A boy sixteen years old, living in the Ninth Ward, had his knee hurt badly while at school, about the first of March last, which, in consequence of neglect, ended in inflammation _ Nd death m of the large bone of the leg, involving the"" 'oo joint.
