Mis..fisaezu:—l was' looking over some stray
numbersof the Gazette a few days ago, and there
found the folloWing card of Nsuir.s:B. Casio,
which I . hadzot seen for many yeany , :liat seeing
It reminded me of some matters which faulted,
from the publication, and which mafhe worth re
membering just at this time. :There is certainly
a degree of manliness about it Which is really ere,
ditable to Mr, CIIAIO, but which proved his poli:
tical death warrant. There is something so utter.
ly base and dishonest in the union of Antimasone
and whig masons, the deceit and hypocrisy of it
are so transpareiW that cards like the following
could not be tolerated for a moment;
A CARD-
Mr. D. N. Warne:—As I war absent at the time
my nomination for assembly, sod for several Nevi..
one weeks, and, ea it was notation. that I had not
been consulted upon the subject, some doubt may
calm as to my acceptance of that nomination, It is,
therefore, proper that I should put- an end to that
doubt by a public declaration.
Those of my friend* who exerted themselves to
procure for my name a place on the ticket, would
.perhaps be placed in an undesirable position, were
1 by declining, to render a re-assemblage of the con
vention •necessary, especially as the last meeting of
that body was at an unusually late day, and leaves
but a brief period for new proceedings. 1 have
therefore concluded not to decline the nomination,
so kindly, and without any solicitation or know'.
edge on my part conferred upon me.
la arriving at tbia concluvion, I feel bound in Jul,.
lice to coy own character for sincerity and Connie.
teeny, and in frankness and fair dealing to every
portion of the parties represented in the late Coo.
vention, to mate plainly and explicitly, that I do not
approve the curse pursued In bringinglogether
that body. For 'ten year. past, 1 have advocated
strenuously the distinctive organization of the Anti
masonic party, and from my occupation was placed
prominently before the public as au advocate of such
• course of action- ' and I cannot consent to give
color to the suspi cion that my conscience or my
principles have been io market, reedy to be barter
ed for any office. Such would be the conclusion of
every Intelligent mind, were i now to become the
silent witness of a different course of proceeding,
and the actual recipient of the first favors granted
under the operation of the late policy. I feel moat
sensibly that silence, at this time, on my part, after
my long continued tad strenuous advocacy and de
fence of the old Antimasonic call would justly sub.
ject me to the suspicion that I preserved silence
now with the hope of obtaining votes which might
not otherwise be given for me.
1 further state with that frankness which candi•
dates should always manifest is their relations with
those of their fellow citizens upon whose auffrago
their elections may depend, that until the Antima•
sonic party of this county shall, atter COW and de.
liberate conaultation overrule its previous determin
aliens and adopt a d ifferent policy, I shall hold my
celia. free, to• advocate its separate and tliS;' ,
tomtit(' organization, as I have been heretol
fore.
Raring made this states:mot of my views and
with all sincerity and without soy deliberation
as to its ineneace upon the result of my candidacy,
I shall calmly and patiently await the derelope•
moats of that result, and whether it my sec.
eels, my defeat. orey.qo my alisiou from the ticket,
I shall at least the cdnaptocumea• that I have

Pittsbargb,Bept.b, 1844.
As soon as this card was published, the .8dao•
care, which supported the kfaiou ticket previously,
turned all its venom against Mr. Caste, so that
he barely escaped defeat by the skin of his
teeth. •
There is one circumstance which was then
talked about, and which is eCi creditable to the poe
litical foresight of Dr. Gsci. S. %ITS, that I think
it wortiornoticee•

Ma. Hastrica-1 give below the solutions of "J
P. 13.4" arithmetical questions, which appeared in
ffiturdars Pod
First Question.—For convenience reduce the so.
tidily to inches, which glees 36,504. Again, every
cube consiete of 6 pyramids—the cubical box will
consist of 6 pyramidal frustrOms ; the solidity of one
of thorn (since duty are equal,) will be I.6th the so'
lidity of the box Itself, hence it I. 6084; by hypo•
thesis the altitude of the frustrom Is 3 inches.—
Therefore, it we now divide the solidity by the akin
tode (3 inched, it will give the area of the mean
proportional between the bane—this mean propor•
timid we find to ho 2028; extracting the square•root
gives a mean between tho sides of the basiv—this to
45.03331. But the difference between, the sides of
the base° it, by hypothesis, 8. Hence the difference
between (ho mean 05.03330 end the greater base is
3; therefore, adding this to the mesa wo have 48.
0333 x, which is the side of the base of the frusirum.
Bur the base of the trustrum is tho side of tho box,
hence the side of the box is 48.0333: inches.
Second.—Since, at the end, A's money for the
space of 2 menthe is entitled to as much as Bps for
3.naontbs, it follows that An money is 3.2 of 800,
and Ws is 2.2 of A's. But Ms and B's together are
equal to $lOO. But again, 3.2 of B'. (which is Ma
money,) and 2.2 of B's le equal to 5.2 oflPs ; there.
fbre, 5 2 of B's is 5100—by reducing, We is 840 and

The !lest Newspaper.
It is soinewhat rerearkable, that the newspaper
press, powerful element as it is in modern civilize.
lion, is scarcely two hundred centuries old. It is
equally remarkable, that a means of instruction
and amusement so apparent should not baste been
established until nearly two hundred ; Yelire after
the discovery of printing. The common belief
that the first English newspaper walspublished in,
1588 r to announce the defeat of the Spanish 'Ars;
made, is now, known to' be a popular error, the
printed sheet in the British Museum, 'called the
“Eoglish-Marearie," and dated in that year, bay.
ing been proved a forgery of a century later in
date. The originator of the mistake was Mr.
Chalmers, who, in a of Roddimen, entered into
the history of newspapers. flebadeeen the btoad
sheet in the Museum, and acceptilig it for what it
had pretended to be, bad announced it as the first
English newspaper. Nichols, D'lsraeli, and oat.
er writers followed Chalmers, without 'enquiry,
and from these aothons the error crept into theca.
cyclopeediai and all the books of the day in which
newspapers, were discussed. Few. assernons are
now perhaps eo generally believed as that "The
English Mercurie was the first English newspa.
per. The detection of the Coat error we owe to
the bibliographer, Mr. Watts, of the British Mu
seum, who, having occasion to examine the "Mer
curie," sew at once that the type and paper were
of comparatively modern origin, an opinion which
has been Confirmed by every subsequent examine I
tion, and it has been freely scrutinized by capable
judges since.
The first newspaper was issued towards the
close of the reign of James the Fire, and was pub.
liaised in. London by a man named Butter This
individual bad been a hired letter writer, in the
pay of numerous country gentlemen, Lis business
being to pick up the newsof London, and send a
=Well sheet of it weekly to hisemployere. The
thought finally struck him that he might serve his
customers mars quickly, and enlarge his business
indefinitely, by printing, instead of writing bin
sheets. At first, however, the enterprise met lit.
tie encouragement. The English are not a peo
ple fond of innovations, and the old manuscript
letter sheets were generally preferred. Butter's
paper was laughed at by the wile and ill•support
ed by the public. Ben Johnson, in his comedy,
liejyag made the new journal the
bitisOf his ridlide. • • Finally, tiowetrenthb . .itives-•

discussion was combined with news, for heretofore
the journals had confined themselves entirely to
the mere narration of events, and those chiefly fo•
