Exhibition of Jealousy In Boston.
About 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the promo
nader*of Washington street—and the lovely quality,
of the atmosphere, a glorious specimen of bright,
beautiful and bewitching May, bad tempted forth an
unusual number of charming women and gay and
gallant men— were astonished out of their propriety
by the appearance of a spirited horse, and handsome
baggy driven by a gentleman, seated alone,
and
hanging behind, with a emote, grasp upon the body
of the carriage a beautiful and elegantly dressed fe.
male. The gentleman drove sloog with the utmost
nonchalance, holding the ribbons and guiding the
horse like a "blood," as he Is, at a fire or eight
mile gait. The lady - behind stock to her perilous
and uncomfortable position, with the courage and
desperation of a feminine Swum, as we have no
doubt she is. Some few philanthrophic and daring
gentleman attempted to stop the horse; bat the mats
of beholders of this novel eshibition seemed rooted
to the sidewalk. The driver occasionally touched
up hts animal with the whip; and looked to the right
and left with evident surprise at the sensation his
elegant "turn out" was creating. On reaching Dock
square, the lady exhausted with the erode! clinging
to the . vehicle; her dream torn and disarranged . , lost
her bold and fell upon the pavement. She was
mediately, raised by policeman Phllbrick, assisted
by several gentlemen who witnessed the affair, and,

menu we are inclined to think is true. The lady we
think, would make a good pioneer in introducing

stop at the Marshal's office, a carriage was called,
and she was conveyed home.—Bosfon Matt, May 22.

Lord Byron and the Monk.
, A writer in a late numberof Eliza Coolc'elour
nalt in giving a description of Newstead -Abbey,
Lord Byron's former 'residence, relates the follow^
At the end of a gallery, a huge stone coffin met
our gaze, with several other relics. of the dead,
such us bones, skulls, Scc , Which were dug np,duft
ring Lord 13yron'a residence at the Abbey, from
under the flagging in-the cloisters. It appears
that at one time his lordship had -a strange fancy
for this species of resarrectionizing • and digging
up of dead men's bones.. But:whether it was that
he fancied the thrifty friars bad filled their coffins
with gold before taking their departure from this
nether world, in order to pay their passage money
and, secure a rapid transition into the „next, or
whether he expected to find some, more brazen
eagles, or what would be still- better, the ,great
iron chest, filled with gold and jewels, that
was reported- to, be buried.or sunk somewhere :ei
ther in the ground.or lake; In whether it was a
mere curiosity - for seeking up antiquarian relics,
I cannot pretend to tell, though report, hints at
the two former thotives, However, amongst oth
er things, this coffin was - brought to light, and
with it the skeleton iaf a think. Another of the
noble lord's strange fancies was:to have the skull
of this said skeleton cleaned, mounted, with silver
and made into a drinking cup He then wrote
the half a dozen stanzas; which are probably well
known to the public, beginniag:
"Start na,aor deem my spirit fted," ,
and which were afterwards engraVed upon the sil
ver: The cup was shown to us by the house
keeper, and with it, the following somewh at strange
and new story. Mind, i don't say that, we helieved'
it, neither do I ask you, gentle reader, to believe
it—l merely tell you the tale as it-was told us by
the worthy woman's own lips, She assuredtus it
was universally credited by the whole household.
The story is this:
When. flyron first 'drank out of this cup, it was
at a party in, the large drawinproom. • Some la
dies were seated beside him, laughing, talking,
and enjoying with him - the festivity of the evening.
Scarce, however, had he raised the fatal goblet to
his lips, when lot:at the 'doorway appeared--
"black, terrific, and'in dusky garb" arrayed—the
headless trunk, or a human being, apparently_,
monk. The ladies shrieked, fainted,.and as many
as could hurried onto( the room. Byron, however
boldly faced the spectre, and demanded of him - his
errand. The monk approached, and accused him
with bitter words of his sin and guilt in thus re
moving from their resting place the bones of the
pious dead. and apProptiating to such vile USES the
skull of a fellow mortal, who once thought spoke,
and Tidied the wine like himself. lie.concluded
by tolling itim the place, daY,ltotir, ind'all the par
ticulars of his death, which—as the goodlady as

Thus ends this short, but strange story. But
thia.ts bnt one in a hundred of the hobgoblin tales
which are told of this ancient place. Byron him
self believed, or pretended to believe in a great
many of them, and to - one tabled visitant especial.

credence, and caused- him to be recognized as
