GENERAL SUMMARY OF EVENTS.
The boy claimed as a slave in San Francisco was
set at liberty, there being no further evidence against
him, than that ho was Mr. Calloway's slave in Mir:.
Snarl.
Judge Morrison, of the Quarter Sessions, has re
signed his office, although three years of hie time
remain unexpired.
Some of the San Francisco streets have been
lighted by the subacriptlon of ciiiiens residing or
doing business upon them. • •
Montgomery, Merchants', and other streets are
thus made passable. safe and pleasant, at night.
Tne examination of Statin, accused ofassasaleation
of Capt. Jarvis at the Mession,Dolores caused 'great
excitement. k rosh was made to take him from the
hands of the police, but with no effect. The pries
over was committed to await the-action of the Grand
Jury.
Two men were shot at Sacramento. while attempt
ing to commit a burglary, by the Capt. of the Watch,
who was expecting and waiting for them. One of
them, George Ogden, was killed on the spot. The
other, named George Morton, was shot in the leg,
and had to have his leg amputated, but subsequently
died. Capt. Ward was cleared of all blame. •
Some effort has been made by Mr. A. D—Merry.
field, to obtain the privilege of supplying the city
with watcr, by introducing It through pipes, from a
lake three miles distant. -
Nothing particular now to elicited respecting the !
Indian Commissioners, and their progress and treaty
with the Indians.
Gen. Bean has been authorized to raise 60 men,
to protect the people of Los Angelos against the
incursions of the Indians, through Cajoe Pass.
The steamer Oregon arrived on the 2d, bringing
news from the States to Feb. 28. Tho report of the
probable appropriations by Congress for the benefit
of California, had a great effect in momentarily run.
Ding up the, value of state scrip, bat it was very
soon tun down again.
.Gee. Percifer F. Smith hoe been ordered to Tex•

A great deal of diseatisfaction.has been felt nod.
exhibited respecting the issuing and circalating of
private coins below their face value, and which the
coiner' refuse to redeem. It is looked upon as an
infamous swindle by eke community. The banks
bare refused to receive it at its real value, and the
merchants have taken somewhat similar action in
relation to it. The Legislature base bill before it,
introduced by Mr. Miller, to oblige coiner' to re
ceive their issues, and to snake their refusal to do so
a misdemeanor, punishable by fine or imprisonment.
Great efforts are being made to induce Jenny.
Lind to visit California, and: letters received from
Mr. Barnum, induce the hope that the object may
be effected.
A new charter for San Francisco has been passed
by the Legislature.
The robbers and highwaymen, in which California
abounds, have been making the vallies in the vi
cinity. of Monterey their theatre of operations of
late. Having the possession Qf the whole country,
they are stealing horses and cattle, and creating a
fear twat Monterey itself may be sacked by them, in
the absence of the men, who are mostly at the mines.
. The Legislature having refused to authorize the
Attorney General to enter a nails prosequi in the
case of the squatters, their trial would bare come
off on the 6th ult., but no Judge being present it did
not occur.
There has been More lynching at the mice,. That
state of affairs is lamentable. The Alta California
cautions their friends at the East against judging
them by the name criterion they would there. They
cannot folly appreciate their condition without see.
lag and feeling it.
Tho City Attorney's report shows a tremendous
amount of litigation—amounting to over two mil.
lions of dollars for the past year.
Politics bare been rather brisk of late, and both.
.Whigs and Democrats are doing their best to 'or.•
ganize. They were preparing for the municipal .
election, which was soon to come off.
Accounts are coming in of new discoveries of
autiferoua alines in animus parts of.the country.
The • mint coital have also had their effect upon
placer diggings—helping the Gulch Diggings, and
for a time, driving those engaged upon the rivers
from their positions.
In connection with the above, we have to notice
the discovery, near BCLICI2, of a coal bed, said to
be of a superior quality. It is located within a few
miles of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's
depot. Many coal beds have also been discovered
in Oregon, so that the Pacific Steam Marine is likely
to bo loon well supplied with this important article
A bill hay passed the Legislature, establishing a
State Marine Hospital at Sacramento, and appro.
printing 830,000 from the State treasury towards
that object.
The two houses of the Legislature had agreed to
adjourn on the 30th ult.
The prospects for the miners and agriculturist
seem better now than at the sailing of the last
steamer. The rains which have fallen have very
much increased the certainty of good crops, besides
securing food for the poor beasts, which otherwtse
would have died of thirst and hunger.
The steamship Gold Hunter was at Acupuleo, ta.

State. The rain, in serious parts of the State have
had a very beneficial effect upon vegetation.
it is asserted in the California papers that the Su
