The New York Journal of Commerce of Thursday
morning,. bee the following account of a terrible
dimmer at Pateracin, N. J.: 1.
In the <Locomotive - Factory of Meseta. Ragere,
Ketchum, fir Grosvenor .et laterson s ..N. J., about
600 men are employed.. Just alter seven o'clock
yesterday morning, before many of the workmen
bad readied the premises, a new locomotlve;weigh
ing tram 18 to 20 - tons, exploded on the ground
floor of the factory,-Ilying some, fifty feet into the
air, through the upper floor and roof of the build
ing, and fell on the wreck it occasioned. Within
-ten minutes after the explosion, the deadbodies of
four - men, Patrick Doherty, laborer, Themaryßes;
taw!, mechanic, Abraham Whitehead, mechanic,
and John Mack, apprentice, were taken Rota the
ruins. Also Wur. Warren, with his lciwer jaw bra;
ken and badly scalded (not 'expected to. recover);
anfl Edward AVEuvoy, T. C,ook, W.CoOk,J. Spawn,
Eicholfield, John Benjamin, Charles Beajamin,
Jobe Ayres, James Ape!), Tames MiCloy, M.
Keller James Keenan, R. Berry, F. Ktog, JaMes
Nicholls, 8. Wallace,- ft. Huston, D. Turnbull, W.
Hawkins, L. lidtner, Keinck; J. McNamara,
P. Delany, and It. - Ilarold, more or. less scalded and
bruised. It appear* that the-locomotive was con
structed for the .Rochester and 13yraense.Railroad,
and would have been:delivered =yesterday but for
this occurrence. The engine had a"101 inch cylin.
der and. 20 loch stroke, and at the.timc of the ex•
plosion had net. more than .70 Ds o f steam on. A
pressure equal to 120 Ms. had been safety tried.
upon her on two previous occasions, and Mr. Rogere
asps ehe was equal to 160 !ht.
An inquest was held - upon the bodies before joke
Vail, the corotier t :whee Mr. Rogers gave it as hie
opinion that , the explosion was occasioned by the
neglect of the workmen in not. keeping the toiler
full; The wit's!. 'SUB probably, reduced below the
crown of the forme, as the crown sheet indicates
having been heated, which' Avonld . not Ivive been the
case had a good supply of water been kept up.
Another witnees, David - Stoddard, a mechanic,
swore to seeing the engine four minutes before the
explosion, in company. with, two Engineertrof the
Erie R. R., and they all observed that the safety
valve lifted unusually, and he left through fear.
The inquest wee adjourned till Friday, to procure
further evidence. A man named John Cook, fire.
man of the shop, was somewhat -injured, and it is
hoped he will
-then be able to undergo an examine
tion. . .
The bodies of the deceaaed'.will be buried this
day. It is due to the firm to state that medical a 1
tendaerce was itiatantly rent for from Nevi York, and
the sufferers are well cared for. Doherty leaves pa.
-rents and young elaters:who were entirely depend.
ant upon him for support. Bustard leaves a widow,
end Whitehead aEyl ow and family.
The injury to tiittbuilding is about $2,000. The
locomotive was worth about $B,OOO. The affair
created meth excitement throughout the town, and
bniiinese was in a greatmeaeure suspended.'

victim to Consumption, sends a tremor to the heart
strings of life. But,
.oh! how joyous the thought that
use and star is still OW own, when just before, De
spair had spread her dark canvass over us.
Such, kind reader, are the pleasurable sensations ex
perienced by bundivds, who, by the use at Dr. Wistar's
Balsam of wild Cherry, have this dire disease slowly,
but surely, driven from their system—aud health,
_rosy
health, again restored to their languishingbodies.
Beware of counterfeits and'base imitations.
