A death.like nese pervaded the scene-the spectators were eh most mute With horior. , Incligoation was depicted in everycountenance, and many a manly as well as gentle eye'atifrused With tearri.' .. The spectacle' was awful to behold—a female prostrate upon her back, lay at full length in a pool of blood, with the whole front of her skull' inaabed in—a man also, with bis,head-beaien to atoms, was lying inthe inud. The house was entered, and here was disclosed the moat appalling sight of all— in the corner of a room, as thoughlt had crawled there and expired, lay crouched upon its face a dead infant. As one of the policemen turned it over, he wept. The side, front, and back of its cranium had beco fractured, and , thougtflifeleas for several hours, and its countenance distorted by the shocking injuries it had _received, there was still ouch a lifelike expression of innocence in its look, that. it was difftchlt for the spectitor So realize the idea that it was really a corpse—it appeared as if only asleep. This alarming *and heart•rending affair is Wrapped in no little mystery. The facts and circumatances as far an disclosed, appear to be these: The family consisted of Valentine Bartle, aged 46, hie wife Catharine, aged 30, both nativea of Gerraany, and four children. A most destructive fire occurred last night, in a lumber yard on the corner o? Race and Columbia streets, which destroyed about twenty buildings, including the large liquor store of Wright & Bro. there. With this exception the houses are mostly private, and not very valuable. The loss is heavy, but the amount is not known. Our city is infested with thieves, and this fire was doubtless the work of an incendiary. About half past 12 to-day, a tremendous end°. lion occurred at the alcohol and canaphine factery ofJohn W. Blau, on Washington street, near South' mirk. owing to the carelessness of the employees. The building was completely demolished. There was no person hurt although several miraculous escapes were made. Pww.anzirata, April 5.
