LOCAL MATTERS. .
-jKirat XtBD Irnnn.TED.~Wc were. mortified to
that on Friday night, thia angel of goodness
# wak most grossly Insulted by a ruffian crowd, who,
whllethe Concert was going on, dashed in atones at
- the window- of her dressing room, and applied to
' her, that shemight bear them, the most shocking:
and degrading epithets. —And when the Concert war
over, the crowd, which was immense, who had as*
aemblcd in front of the building, appeared determ*
ined not to leave until they would boo her. Afler
all the visiters had departed it atilt waited, (the car*
rilge being there, ready to take her to the Monon*
gebcla Bouse,) bnt she was so much alarmed and ter
rified at what bad already occurred (hat she couldn’t
think of coming out while the crowd remained, and
It looked very mnch as if she would bo detained all
night, when, by some means or other, as the story
goes, an honest, good-hearted drayman by the name
of Keating, got into iho room and told her that if
she would entrust herself to his caro he would as
sure her that she would get home safe. She listened
to him and confided m his integrity. She accom
panied him, followed by some or her troupe, we
suppose, out the back way, and succeeded id making
good ber retreat before the crowd was aware of her
departure,
Very Beautiful.—Speaking of the delightful
weather for taking a ride in a baggy, we on Saturday
examined one of the most beautiful and easy riding
patent spring ones we have ever aeon west of the
moaotsms. It belongs to Thos. Steel, Esq., and
was manufactured by Bigelow, in Diamond alley,
whose exquisite workmanship and taste in such
matters is causing his shop to be patronized by an
immense run of custom. His carnages, etc., ap*
pear to be all tbo go. Even if you don’t buy, call
and see them.
- Officer Fox arrested a mao on Friday night
by the name of Tbeo. Laurenson, charged with
stealing a watch from Reinh&rd’s Hotel, Third fit.
He was brought bofore the Mayor, and in default of
$5OO bail, committed. It appears that ho pretended
to be a priest, and had papers on his person to bol
ster hit pretensions. The villain who could assume
such a character to prey upon the poblic, should be
punished severely.
JBgTvA.Gertnan lad in the Fifth Word, a few days
;«ince,-had a most important surgical operation per*
formed upon bun. He had been born with o defect
ire upper lip, and a surgeon was called irr the other
day, who cut from bisJeg a piece of ficsb, which he
formed into a lip, attaching it to the small part
which nature bad allowed him, and . the probability
is that the experiment will be successful.
S3T Mr. Baroum sooooncee Jeothatny Lmd will
give another Concert here io Jalynext, “ if arrange*
moots can-be made to secure the audience and her
eelf from disturbance.” The shameful outrages of
Friday night mast receive the condemnation of cv*
Cry citizen who has at heart the good name oi our
City.
- Haepeb’s Maoazibe.—Tne second volume of
this excellent publication will be ready in a fow
days. Persons wishing to have the work can
procure it, bound to Now York style, at Holmes’
Literary Depot, Third street, opposite the Post
Office* . .
fiST* Tbo railroad men who are charged with
beating Jones, the Chief Engineer of the Cbaruers
Railroad, made tbc:r appearance before Mayor
Gutbric on Saturday, and were held to bail for their
appearance-at the next term of tbo Quarter Sea
B ious.
Fire.— The alarm of firo on Sunday morning,
• about two o’clock, was caused by the burning of a
brick house oearly opposite the .Water Works. It
was entirely destroyed.
BSTJosepb F. D. Keating, who accompanied
Jenny-Lind Id ber Bight from Masonic Hslt, was
yesterday the observed of all observers. Great
numbers were endeavoring to make bis acquaintance.
- Re-EhOaoeo.—Miss Davenport has been resens
gaged, for five nights longer, and appears this even*
leg us Charlotte Corday, the title of the piece
which bis bees written expressly for hor.
I^-Oa mouoa of Col. McCandlers, James R.
Snowdoo, Esq .> was admitted to practice <r the
