MiW DAvilhKilLT.—’WAwilt have a fireat treai

tinguiahed Actress,, wbp : has been, for some time
drawing crowds of admirers wherever she appeared*
haa now' fortfie first time crossed the Mountains,
and Will make her first appearance in the West in
thia City, on Monday evening- ,Tho excitcmoat .was
so great in Boston, that although she acted there lo
crowded honsos for eighty-five nights in qno year,
tha tickets fur her mghta were often sold at a pre*
n ; n m -and on her first appearance in that city, it is
vioguiar to mark how just one of their great critics
was in his judgment, and how truly it has been Ton
ified by the.sensation she has created in every oity
•be has visited : -
«< Mias Davenport appeared at ih e Athensum bat
night as Julia, iri Sheridan' Knowles* play of ,‘*,Tho
Hunchback.” In our humble opinion, the theatrical
critics in this country: have done her no more than
jnsticeVnor do we betievo that generally they have
done Inetico enongh to that severely correct study,
and classic finish* in which she unquestionably excels
most artistos of her day. The pumy.of her pronun
ciation, her clear and meaning intonations, are quite
worthy of her just and graceful conception of the
character represented. .The dtsiinguishing-charac*
lorislic ofiMiss.Davenport’s acting is an exqmaite
and a faitbftil naturalness (always suited to tho occa
sion) that is absolutely charming. She follows na
ture so truly that Shakspeare himself would be con
tented with her performance. Then sho h&B elegant
manners and an easy propriety in all .situations,
which ehow how faithfully, and how artistically.eho
has stodied. In playing Julia as a country*girl, she
is just what she ought to be—a simple, natural crea
ture, bnt without those hoydenish am, and those
*t robustious” exhibitions with, which many actresses
caricature the part. On tho other hand, the over*
whelming energy which she displayed in the last act,
in the sccneß with Clifford and Master Walter,
showed how capable she was of comprehending and.
feeling the.part 10 alt us various relations. Bbe. in
spired confidence'm the beginning, but admiration
for her genius and talent went on eempro crescendo
(as they say to tnusif) as the piece proceeded. Upon
tho whole, we are no longer surprised that this fora
tnn&ts lady haa made so great a stir among the dra
matic critics: We think she'will give them enough
to do foT some time to come.”

for an Assault and Battery upon the person of An

I fine of $2O, and costs of prosecution. Also, in the
I case wherein Rcany.waa prosecutor and Fontana do.
I fondant, he was sentenced to pay tho cost- of proec

The case of the Com. us. Oliver W. Shaw, fof
Assault and Battery on Nathaniel Hopper, was re
sumed this morning. The jury rctarned a verdict of
guilty. •
Coxa- vs. Thomas Bogue and William Jackson.—
Larceny of a coal boat cable, and other articles.—
Defendants plead guilty. It will be remembered,
that at this term, already, Jackson has been con*
dieted on one or two charges of a similar character.
Tbojary returned a verdict of not guilty.
Com vs- Joe. 8- Torner, and the Com. cs. Oliver
W. Shaw, cross bills for Assault and Battery, and
tho Constable who arrested them indicted them for
an affray- The three-indictments are before tbo
jury atone time.
A number of* witnesses were examined on each
eids, who clearly established that there had been an
affray between the parties, but how the matter will
be determined will be known to-day.
ear There was a man seat in to tbo Mayor’s of*
fice, last evening, from Section 16, Pennsylvania
-Railroad, who was deranged, and .the poor fellow ]
would have to sleep in tho watch.bou6& until this
morning, when it is hoped that some eoitablc pro.
vision will be made for him. We think each con
duct in the contractors, or those who caused him to
be brought to such a place, is highly : censurable.—
They should have kept him until a proper placo was
found for bis reception. . . .
Jebht Lisp-—Tho contagion of ibe Nightingale

being entertained of her not honoring us with a vis.

visit can afford.
B3T The alarm of fire yesterday morning was |
caused by a light issuing from the dining room o f i
Mr. Henry Woods, on Penn street, which was in
flames. The fire was extinguished before the on

room was much damaged. It is not yot known how
at caught. ■
The Kiuxistes. —This little troupe give another
■of their most delightful entertainments this evening,
at Wilkins Hall. It will bo a rare musical treat,
and whercever they have been the, have met with
the most unqnalifled approbation of all who have
heard them. -

I was under the care of a skilled physician from the

then about helpless, and my friends considering my case .
hopeless, or at least beyond the reach ofoarphysfoian , U
