To-day was petitions day again, and but iritis
was done ‘ Themonotony that usually character*
izea petition day was* however, broken in upon by
the refusal of the House to receive a petition pre
sented by Dr. Brower of Butler, praying for an
investigation of the alleged corruptions of the
“ State House Row” m Philadelphia, and reflect
ing strongly upon the character of the members
of Philadelphia county, .charging some of (hem
with being participants in the corruptions.' At!
the request or Mr, A. E. Browtf of Northampton,
the petition wah read) when he took the floor,'and
in an able speech protested against its reception
He contended for the widest latitude of speech for
petitioners, and felt disposed to give them all; the
privileges which could in -reason be asked j. but
when the character of members upon the floor of
the-Hoose was assailed; and the House asked to]
sanction the false charges insinuated against them,
by receiving the petition containing them, he, for.
one, objected to it,-and hoped the House would
sustain him- ■ The reception of the petition would
be a direct endorse! of the charges, and would bo
a virtual assent, to have them- spread upon , the
Journal)'for. future reference by any miscreant
who might desire to slander and traduce the char
acter of the present members of the county of
Philadelphia; ■ . • ■
To this Dr. Brower attempted a reply, which he
mixed up with some very indignant expression,
accompanied by a most withering glance towards
Mr. Brown. When .the-'vote was taken, to the
i honor of the House be it; spgkeu, every member
save one (Dr. Brower) voted against its reception.
After so signal a rebuke, it is to he presumed Mr.
Dickenson will scarcely trouble.the Legislature of
Pennsylvania with any more petitions or requests
for the use of their Hall for his exposures, as be is i
pleased to call them. ; :
This: morning the.bill compelling the Hamt
bargUand Lancaster Railroad Company to fence
in to much of their road as passes through .Dau
phin county, was called up and reconsidered by
agreement, when several attempts were made,to
have the commutes to which it was referred re
port a general hilt instead of a iptctal one. 'These
failed, and the bill was referred to a select com
mittee of five: Meats. Eonfcel, Haldeman,- 01»
i wine, Linton and Reckhow. This commutes will,
I think, report it without amendment; but there
is little doubt hut that a general bill, compelling
all railroads in tho State to be fenced, will he
passed.
. There 13 a prospect of having our Schoot Daw*
amended and modified, which is an object alto*
getbcr desirable, as there is ample room for im
provement. With a view to this, the Committee
on Education have asked (or the eospension of
the resolution authorising tboipnnliog of 10,000
copies of the Common School Beport, unlit the
Committee has made ilt report, and the House
taken action opon it.
The following resolution was colled up by Mr.
Leet, of Washington county, and. as it is a subject
in which many Pennsylvanians arc deeply inter*
ested, it is to be hoped that it may reach Wash
ington in time to have its effect upon our Repre
sentatives there. -Mr, Beet deserve*. credit far
lh» energy manifested in having it passed through
■the House at once.
- Resolved, byUht Sennit and Hatut ofßepjaeal*

General Jlutmbltj met : That our Senator* in Con
gress be instructed, and our Representative* re
quested, to procure the passage of a. law awarding
an additional quantity of land to each officers,
non-commissioned officer* and privates of the war
of 1612, as can show to the satisfaction of the
proper Department that they had continued in
.service (at the request of their commanding offi<
ccr.Y to meet exigencies, after their, term, had ex*
pired, and that they had received on honorable and
final discharge.
Resulted, That the Governor be requested to
forward copies of this resolution to- the Speakers
of the two Houses of Congress.
The following bills were read in place by Mr.
Robertson:

Courting.
An old paper says;—"Courting is a subject
which, alwaya important, is becoming peculiarly
so, and we design .to call the attention of young
people to it occasionally, in hope of arresting an
alarming evil. Young Indies are bound to fall in
love os soon os possible, and bound to get a partner
for life os coon ns the necessary preliminaries are
made-such us getting a lover, fuscinating him
thoroughly, being courted, having the question
popped; getting the wedding garments in array and
inviting friends to see him prettily married. Thu
young man is bound to be gallant and polite, and
to admire witbrfut stmt, all the pretty young girls
known and unknowp, to doff the beaver, offer his
arm, invite to ride, plen9ant saunter —in short, to
all tho sundries; indeed; to show his devotion and
gallantry towardß the fair sex, until eome new en
chantress throws her spell around him, and he
[ sinks, subdued, into a commonplace, indifferent,
i careless Benedict. Now out of these things grow
[ difficulties. A young man admires a pretty girl
and mast manifest it; he cannot help doing so lor
the life of him The young lady has a tender heart
reaching out like vine tendrils for something to
cling to; she sees the admiration, is flattered, bc»
I gins SOon to love, expects some avowal, and per
haps gets so far as to decide that she will choose
a white satin under a thin gauze, at the very mo*
ment the gallant that aha loves is popping the
question (good, bn! Iia!) to another damsel ten
miles off- ■ Now the difficulty Is, not precisely uu*
dantanding the difference between polite attentions
and the tender manifestations of sighing love.—
Admiring abeautiful girl, and wishing to make a
wifi of her, are not always the same; and there.
I'fote. it is necessary that a girl should be on the
I alert to discover to which class the attention paid
I her by a handsome and gay young man belong.-
Fust, then—if ayoung fellow greets you in n loud,
I free, hearty voice—if he.knows precisely where
I to:put bis hat, or his hands—if he stares you in
j the eyes with his own Wide open—if he tell you
I who made bis coat—if bB squeezes yout hand—if
1 heeats heartily in your presence—if he fails to talk.
hveryhradly toyour raother-r-if he sneezes while
I you oreeingiog, or criticises your curls, or fails to
j-act very fooiißh m fifty ways in every hour,, then
I ‘don't fall m love with him for the world, he only
1 adauwayon, iet him do or cay what he will.”
