AT no time for many years has ‘ there been such un
scrupulous trickery practikeil upon the public
about penmanship, as at present. Pieces of engraving
are circulated through the town and country, with the en
graver's name suppressed, in order to induce the igno
rant to believe them to be penmanship. Persons desi
rous of becoming rapid and elegant penmen, will do well
to call at DUFF'S MERCANTILE COLLEGE, and ex
amine the handwriting of some of the beet penmen in
the city, who have been instructed in this Institution.

The Anti•Bentoniane in the Legislature have nom
inated !bin. James H. Greene as a candidate for U.
S. Senate. The Bentonians have made no nomina
tions, having determined to stick to Benton first, last
and all the time. There are sarong prospects of a
row at the Rotunda in this city to night, between the
Benton and Anti-Benton parties, Of they have called
meetings at the same_ time and place. The police
have been ordered to be on hand in view of the
difficulty.
The river is dear of ice, and raining. There have
been no arrivals from below daring the last few days.

The meeting was held with open doors; and a revolt].

The vote wail taken on our new City Charter to
day, which resulted in favor of it by a majority of
2.53. Upwards of 3000 votes were polled.
