PITTSBURGH:
MONDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 31, 1849
Democratic State Central Committee.
The members of the Democratic State Committee
are requested to meet at - Businsale Hotel, in Har
rishurg, on Tuesday,29th January, 1850, at 9 o'clock
ear., for the purpose of fixing the time and place for
the meeting of the nest Democratic State Conven
tion; • J. GLANCY JONES, Chairman.
G. G. Wrsrcurr t Secretary.
[The.Democratic payers throughout the State are
requested to publish this notice.]
rzr The Democratic Convention will meet at 11
oclock, this morning. The Delegates should not
fail to attend. We give this notice, lest some one
may be laboring under . the impression that it will
not meet until Wednesday. They meet at the New
Court House.
Carriers of the Post.
The gentlemen who, every morning, deliver the
Post to the readers, will call upon them to.dny or to
morrow for the complimentary recompence which
custom demands on Now Year's Day.
Mr. Forgeus has gone to the expense of getting
out an Address for himself ealusively. It was writ.
ten by a gentleman well qualified for such a task.
In addition to the matter of the address, there is an
almanac for the ensuing IS months, which business
men will very much like to see. Also, thp 4, Penn
sylvania Courts for 1850."
Mr. F. 'requests us to say that he means no harm
by lho following;
" Perhaps your pocket book in thin
Perhaps your purse is lank—
Perhops you have knote to pay
Thin afternoon in bank."
From his knowledge of the circumstances of those
whom ho serves with the Post, he believes those
lines will not apply to them. Ile-puts his trust upon
their liberality. Those who know - how , toappiTcl".

tbat a half dollar will be 111dd:fully received.
The other carriers will also be around with their
Annual Token.' A more faithful and honest set or

they will be well treated by our puma.-
The Uniontown Post Office
It is wonderful that even Moses Hampton is will
ing thatthe administration shall be disgraced by the
blundering of his brother•in law, Beazel. The mis
takes that have occurred in that office since the ap
pointment of Mr. B. are astonishing. And yet the
Whig papers of this city have not one word to say
on the subject. Have not the business men of this
city an interest in the manner in which the Union
town Post Office is conducted t We think so.
We shall advert to this subject again ; and in the
mean time ask attention to the following from the
last No. of the Fayette Whig:—
It is again our imperative duty to announce still
more blundering by the Post Master of this place.
Letters containing money, or of a private character,
intended atone for the eye of the person to whom
directed, aro as likely to. be handed out by Beazel to
Tomi Dick and Harry, seta the proper person. We
noticed a case last week, of this nature, and we
have now zzrazz more to lay before the dommunlty.
One,or these was directed to Jonathan Fisher and
conttned money; this was handed to J. IC. Fisher
Co.,who, on returning it to the Post Master, were
&aired to - keep the blander quiet. Another was di.
rested to General Beeson—it was given to Eli Stur
geon. The third, which occurred yesterday, was
directed. to Asher M. Baily, and was handed to A.
W. Barclay, Esq. • .
We pahliith these facts to show the utter inepacity
of the.present incumbent,,und will add, that be re
ceived. hie appointment through the Influence of
Moses Hampton, his brother-in-law, against the wish
and desire of at least three.fairths of our citizens.
California is Democratic.
How gratifying must this announcement be to
every true-hearted American. The recent elec.
tions throughout California, resulted in, the over
whelming triumph of the Democratic party. The
federal whigs who located there undertook to
"steal a march" upon the Democrats; bat it was
of no avail. The wise and liberal policy of the
Dechocratic party gave to the United States an
empire on the Pacific, rich in soil and valuable in
mineral wealth. It was but right that the people,
at their first election, should choose Democrats to
fill the various offices in the country.
Peter H. Burnett, (dem) has been.chosen first
overnor of the State of California, over John A .
otter, (whig.) John McDougal, has been elected
Lieutenant Governor.
Rodmin N. Price and George W. Wright,
democrats, have been elected to Congtess, and the
Derhocrats have carried their Senatorial and Re
presentative tickets. . -. • •

Of California. The State of California" is there.
fore a real, tangible and great commonwealth,
from thin day forwards., To her thirty sisters on
the east of the Rocky biountains, she sends her
message of-love and fellowship, praying that the
goldonchain that, binds her to them, may never be
broken by- the rude shocks of time; and that the
glittering glory which surrounds her, may not be
tarnished by a cold or indifferent admission into
the great confederacy.---Alta California.
Great Fire.
On last Monday night, the Lewistown Mille, in
Mifflin county, werß, totally destroyed by fire. The
original, cost of the Mills was $30;000. Mr. Sterrett
was sole‘proprioter. About 700 bushels grain and
-some sacks of salt were lost.

that men shall not loan their credit and receive-in

The N. Y. Post has discovered that the word

This chews how severely public opinion in this
country treats the advocates of huge monopolies.
The Tariffites attempt to conceal their infamous
purpose beneath such phrases as " encouragement of

when they dare not, before the people, proclaim

Mr. - Cobb is the twenty-seventh Speaker of the
House furnished by the slave states, while in the
whole sixty years which have elapsed since the fed

mean those free at the time of the election—have
furnished but. four. It has been urged, we know,
that some of the states horn which the twenty-seven
Speakers were taken, have since become free states;
but that makes no difference—they were slave states
at the time, and identical in interest with the oth

We glean the following items from the files of
papers brought by the Empire City:
[From the Alla Californian, of November 14.)
S CLNE AT THE Pow Orrtcr..—On Saturday morn
ing, at an early hour, despite the straight-downward
ness of the rain, and the muddy, slippery, con
temptible condition of the streets, a multitude be
sieged the Post Office for letters, hich would have
done honor to the intelligence of the proudest me
tropolis in the Union. Of course, all could not he
accommodated at once, and so, " a way of coming
at it " was adopted, which reflected still more lustre
pa the American name.
Lines were formed, stretching down a slippery
hill to the distance of eighty feet from the office.
Shoulder to shoulder stood men from every part of
the United Stales, and a step was gained whenever
ono had made his enquiries at the windOw and re
tired. After the lines were funned, they remained
unbroken, and accessions to the number must •" fall
in behind."
Not unficquently would persons remain in the
ranks for three nod four hours. "'Ranee' near
the window weraeold for five and ten dollars. All
this was done in it --Min, to bear up against which
would have tried the fortune even of Oregonians.
We think the rainy Beason has now fairly sot in,
though wo may have a few more fine dap, during
this month.
NErr•litrm..—Tho "Graham Howie" now erect
ing arthe'corner of Kearny and Pacific streets, is of
wood, with'ilnick basement. It fronts 100 feet on
'Kearny street and 62 on Pacific. It is four and a
half stories high and contains 96 rooms. The bar
room is 70 by 45 feet. Balconies upon each of the
first three denim extend around both fronts, afford
ing a promenade of 607 feet. There aro three ten
pin alloys in the basement. The frame of the en
tire building was sent oat, we learn, from Baltimore.
Sommr..—Ferdinando Flint, a Germon,_ aged 96
years, committed suicide in a house in Pacific street,
at about ten o'clock on Sunday morning, by blowing
out hie brains with a pistol. • Temporary insanity, is
said to be the cause.

a less hazardous game of skill and scientific calcu

Some few weeks since, f ynan from one of the
North River counties presenetd himself to Prof.

must be removed, or death would SObti follow.
The man consented, and was put under the influence
of chloroform. Not only the lip, but most
