The'lpfrerence,
We ask the attention of oar reader° while ea . !
point' out. a...marked 'difference between, the Whig'
nadir:tem:int:talc parties., ' •
On Tharaday, or last week,: theJoornal asked for
oar views relaiiiin to the bargain ' between W. J.
Brown and the. Free ; Sellers. •To this, we gave
each a reply as satisfied our neighbor.
On Tuesday last, we propounded a question to the
johrtial, in - relation to the anti.sloveryiam of pdr,,
Winthrop. _We Were enlace to lutiave'veipliei. :
did not appoint certain Committees with a vierlio
the sopprcatdon of anti-slavery petitions. The Edi
tor never condescended 'to Optic° the matter.
Again, Am Thursday, we asked some information
from the Journal on the subject of tho Tariff. Our
readers will recollect that President Taylor, in his
Message, declares himself, in favor of—lst, An
augmentatiei of resenue Encouragement of
industry by protective duties 3rd, An'extension of
commerce. There seemed 'to be something pre
posterous In these propositions. We could not
comprehend how the revenue was to be augmented
by prohibiting ,the importation of foreign goods.
*Because, if nothing cornea in, there is nothiegmen
which a tax.can be levied. Nor could wo under
stand the President% theory of" extending coca
.
mette,” because it does appear to no that if
ports be lirohibitid, we at the same limo prohibit
exportsi'and thus, leave nothing for tho seamen to
do. If the President means by the words 4,encoar
ago industry," the adoption of such a scale of dos
ties as, will prevent foreigners from entering into
competition with our owo capital and labor, we can
not see how this can be - done, without diminishing
the revenue ned destroying commerce.
Such are, in brief, our views. In good faith we
asked•the Journal for light on the subject. But
Gene came: The paper was thrown into our office,
on yesterday morning, as usual, butitleontained not
one word on the subject of the Message' or Tilriff.
As will be observed fiom the above, the difference
' between as is this: Wereply to anyqiiesti on the
Jonroal skulks.
Progress of Pittsburgh.'
Eicry man of, observation is astonished at the
rapid growth 110 dyrelpptherit of oat city and Its re
sources. Theemetion of new mantacturing estab
bailments, and business and dwelling houses, scorns
to bo more ajlila(ter' Magic .than ienlity. A now
branch of business has recently been started, which
must soon. become one of,the molt Important wo
have got, viz:—the manufacture of Copper from the
ore. The Pittsburgh and Boston .Mining Co. aro
now constructing, on the Monongahela river, (beside
the Smelting Worked a Mill for rolling copper into
sheets; and in a abort time our market 'will be sup
plied with our domestic material. , The facilities o f
oar city for this braO4 of manufacture are consider.
ed unequalled ; cheap fuel being of more importance
Viso the cost or transportation. .Wo have not learn
ed what the size and capabilities of the Copper Mill
will be, but we underatand it will be on a pretty
large Vale. The name of ono of its enterprising
propiletere, TIiONMI M. flown, Esq., is a guaranty
of its success. _ .

in a double ratio in favor of the south, by increasing
