BALTIMORE HOG MARKET
In the Commercial column of the Sun of the 26th
'we find the fallowing:
Hoos.- 7 00 market *Teri Very superior induce
ments for the disposal of hogs. Its central location
aid direct communicotion - west, with its numerous
and extensive cutting and pacing establishments,
presents a market tothe drover where he may at all
timekobtain reit pricea for his stock. The contiguity
of this market to the Atlantic, with the large demand
for provisions _from England, and a known prefer
ence for our packing over other markets In the Uni
ted Slates, is one of its best recommendations. In
proof of which we will merely say that some fifteen
of our largest class veasels, : freighted almost entire.
ly with provisions, were dispatched from this port
the past season. Our market bids fair to.out-rival
Cincinnati itself, the great pork emporium; and, for
fear that we may betonsidered too sanguine, we an
nex the - following extract - from the annual report of
'the President, and Directors of the ~ Baltimore and
Ohio railioad.company t .who have, in Slew of a still
further lecreate in the transportation, greatly en
larged their, facilities: obi 1847 the whole number
of hogs trasported over the road did not extend 84,-
000; in 1848 the number had increased to 111,852,
sod during the past year a still further increase to
195,665, or cheat to 75 per -cent., on the preceding
year." To these large receipts are to be added
about 25,000 head from other sources, making in the
aggregate about 220,000. This will compare quite
favorably with Cincinnati. The whale number pack
ed there, according to the Cinbionati Price Current,
the past year, were 410,000 bead, being a decrease
of 90,000 from the number packed the preceedlng
year. The whole timber , of hogs packed in the
West, the past year, are estimated at 1,500,000.
