Mr. Harper should by all means defend himself
against the charge of having published a libel.
And, if it *lipoid be withdrawn, he owes it equally
to the public to expose the whole truth by comment

prosecution, which will give him en equally good,
if not a better opportunity to take the testimony of .
Gen. Taylor and the gentlemen who were with him

The sober minded and reflecting portion of the com

should take immediate measures to repudiate and
disavow all connection with Barker & Co. They
certainly owe it to themselves to do this, en order to
remove the sligheat suspicion that they countenaoce
and encourage the nuisance of which we complain.
The Mayor is of the opinion that he has not the
Power to arrest these brawlers, w ithont direct au•

We differ entirely from Ms lionor in regard to this
matter. The police undoubtedly have the power to
abate a nuisance; and that the evil complained of
constitute. s nuisance, we think does not admit of a
doubt. But still it may be advisable for Councils CO
puss an Ordinance, at their first meeting, investing
the Mayor and his Police with special authority to
arrest and bring to the bar of justice thopersobs who

Councils have not the moral courage to pass an Or

ly made manifest. In a few days we shall be ena

• Thera is an even tide in human life a season
when the eye becomes dim and- the strength de.
rays, and when the winter of age begins to shed
upon the human head its prophetic snows. It is
the season of, life to which the autumn is most
analogous v and which it becomes, and lama it
would profit you, my elder brethren, to mark the
instruction whiCh the season brings. The spring
and summer of your days are gone, and with not
only joys they knew, but many of the friends who
gave them. You have entered upon the autumn
if your being—and whatever may have been the
profusion of your spring 7 —or the warm tempers'
ment of your summer, there is a season of still".
ness or solitude which the benincenca of heaven
affords you, in which you may meditate upon the
peat and.the future, and prepare yourself for the
mighty change you may soon undergo.
It is now you, may understand the magnificent
language'of heaven—it mingles its voice with
that of Revelation—it summons you to these
hours when leaves fall and the winter is gathering,.
to that evening study which the Mercy of heaven
has provided in the book , of salvation. And while;
the shadow valley opens, which leads to the abOde
of death, it speaks of that love Which can - col*
tort and save,,and which can conduct to these pas.
tures-and those still waters, where there is eternal
spring for the children of God.

The blow which had already been struck ` °tithe'

was, however, even more decisive. The district, -
kying between the Theiss, , the Maxtuq, end the
Danube bad long been marked oet as th e scene of
the lam decisive battle. The advance of Peale
witsch to Grossvardein„ of Leder, on the enat, titillof

rison or Teinosystr, tinder Gee. Rukowinziatill held

my. He was attacked on the following, day by the
Imperial forces, which had-pressed on with memo
rapidity after the battle of keit& Or= Szegedin;
and in spite of the strength of the ground, the Hun
gariana were routed by the main body , of.the Aus
trians, supported by , one division of the Russians un
der Panioune. Towards the close of the =battle
Prince Licluenstein)s reserve division arrived, by
good fortune, by the And road and completed the
defeat ofthe enemy. It isprobable that after these
tremendous blows Katmai and the Poles will effect
their escape across the Turkish frontier, and all or
ganized resistance may, we hope, be conaidered at
an end.
In spite of the violence of this conflict, and the
absolute triumph which appears to havecrowned the
efforts of the Imperial armies, it is most earnestly to
be hoped that the American Government isilldismiss
every feeling of irritation towards the defeated par
ty, and proceed to re-organize the kingdom of Hun
gary, on terms which may revive the loyalty and good
feeling of that important portion of its dominions.
We have constantly maintained:that there have been
throughout this insurrection two parties in Hungary;
the ono revolutionary, the other not revolutionary,
but national; the former has, we trust, been annihi

and its national character and spirit constituteone of
the brightest jewels in the Imperial Cretin.
is indispeinuble far the welfare and security of
Austria and of Hungary that these vigorouseloots
should be entwined in the constitution of.the Mon
archy, and that the state should rest ",set on. the vrob
jagetion of either, but on the consolidated equitable
union of both. Above ail, we trust that nothieg will
lead the Austrian Government to repeat the fatal
experiment of the Emptier of Russia, by driving
into exile the most ardent and intelligent portion of
his subjects, until they become, like the-Poles,.the'
Bedoulas of Europe, because they have been depri
