held last night. Officers were appointed, and an

There has been- a 'great freshet at Three Rivers:
all the bridged between that'place and Quebec have
been carried away, and -the streets have been navi
gated by canoes.' Large gee/bdNA of produce are,

court of Nisi Prins is concerned. The Judge order
ed all rules to be , discharged in reference to a
new trial, and judgment entered upon the verdict.
The defendents , counsel took an appeal to the Su
preme Court, and they were ordered to give security
to the amount 'of $20,000 to prosecute the appeal
with effector in default to pay to Morgan the sum
of slo,oooi and costs. 'The security was immedi
ately given.

ury of Wisconsin-is so palpably empty that the mem
bers of the late Legislature either went home with

treasury la about 111:25,000.
Ear A , fire broke out in Troy, N. Y., on the 18th
instant, in 'Morris Place Hall, which soon swept
scrolls thb.huilding, wrapping the immense canvass
Hudaonhi Panorauia in its flames. The building
was damaged to the amount of . 64,000—insured.—
The panorama was rained at 926,000, and insured for
$lO,OOO. Damage was done to others amounting to
$5 or $6,000.
SW" The magistrates'of Windsor, Ragland, have
bad under investigation the case of a man who has
on several occasions threatened the life of the
Queen. He is twenty-threeyears old, of rather-idi
otic appearance. : He was employed some time , hack
in a colliery at-West Bromwich. In January, 1848,
he wrote a letter to the Queen, declaring that she
should die by his hands, Unless he had his "rights."

tragedy has been perpetrated in the 'District of
Edgefteld, which has excited equal horror'and in

ted. The Edgefteld Atkertiser, referring - to the
matter, sayi. -
"Derelopernents.—A Coroner's inquest was held
on Friday last over the dead body of a. negro, dis
covered -in the longer edge of this District, near
tbelexington line. The - jury in identifying the
body, found_ it to be that of App or Appling, the .
slave of Martin Posey, charged with the murder
of Mrs. Posey who as our readers recollect, was
found dead a month or si x weeks since, with marks
of violence, on her person. Suspicious circum
stancst
stance--attend The negro% death. His bands were
tied, - and a leaden ball was extracted frain one of
his ribs,which had been broken, clearly indicating
that be came to his death by a gun or . pistol Shot.

the master of the negro; a man by the name of
Kirkland, and one by the name of Jones. Strong
suspicion - also attach to the two former for the
murder of Mrs:Posey, the wife of Martin Posey.

guards of the Fawn were torn off, and the gentle
man,s cabin considerably crushed. We wonder that
the destruction of life was not greater. The of f icers

sistance of the injured boat, and secured the freight
